Chapter Seventy-Nine

Many people envy his talent and luck, and many more envy him for sitting in this position.

To reach a high position, one must bear its weight.

Shu Yun stood quietly outside the window. She saw Jiang Yan gaze at the green leaves on the window frame for a while, then rub his temples wearily before turning back to read the memorials.

After she left, Jiang Yan grew from a thin, small boy into the emperor he is today, ruling the world, unifying the country, and holding the power of life and death.

Shu Yun silently watched the illusion transform, the world spin, and the scenes change.

Once the surroundings had settled down, she looked around and found them somewhat familiar.

She strolled around the courtyard, which awakened memories deep within her memory palace. This was her house in Pingyang, where Feng Ziyi was still a child, and where she found Jiang Yan.

She heard a noise at the door, went around to the back of the main house, and walked out in a very casual manner. After all, the people in the illusion were just illusions of memories, and to them, she did not exist.

Ke Min pushed open the dilapidated and heavy gate of the mansion and cautiously followed Jiang Yan step by step.

The guards remained hidden in the shadows as before, but things were different now. Jiang Yan was no longer a merchant living in anonymity, but the ruler of the land. If something happened to him now, it would surely lead to another chaotic era.

Ke Min strongly disagreed with Jiang Yan leaving the capital in his private server. Fine, he left, but he wasn't allowed to make a fuss about it. He only brought a small group of people and hid his whereabouts all the way here.

His master had secretly ordered him to investigate the Pingyang residence many times, but he still couldn't find anything out.

"Master, it would be best to bring more guards, just in case."

Ke Min forced himself to give advice, saying that his master had become increasingly terrifying since becoming emperor, and he often couldn't figure out what his master was thinking.

Jiang Yan raised his hand and took off the crimson cloak draped over his body. Without even glancing at Ke Min, he sneered, "If there's a problem, it's because you didn't do your job properly and leaked our whereabouts to those people."

Ke Min hurriedly caught the cloak that Jiang Yan threw to him. He felt that he had done a good job of finishing up, but one can never be too careful about what might happen.

Of course, he dared not say anything more now.

Jiang Yan walks slowly, and being as competitive as he is, how could he be willing to expose his flaw and let others see that he is a cripple?

He walked to the front of the main house and was about to go in when the door was already open. He stepped inside and suddenly frowned and looked around.

Ke Min was very nervous: "What's wrong?"

The guards in the shadows also tensed up.

Jiang Yan composed himself and walked into the main house. "It's nothing."

His gaze swept over the furnishings of the main house. He had instructed his men to restore the house exactly as it was, without altering a single detail.

In his memory, he had always lived in the side room. If he was the only one living there, why would he choose to live in the side room instead of the main room? If there was someone living in the main room, who was it? Why was his memory blank, and why did he not remember such a person living there?

Jiang Yan returned to Pingyang after many days. He was very familiar with the furnishings of this main house and hoped to recall some things here.

He had a strong intuition that told him he had to find that blank memory.

Ke Min stood close by, following Jiang Yan as he surveyed the dance hall, which was far smaller than the imperial residence. He lowered his voice and asked, "Well, Master, have you discovered anything?"

Shu Yun's body passed directly through the screen and chair, and she stayed by the two of them, listening to Ke Min mutter to himself.

Jiang Yan remained expressionless and said calmly, "What could you possibly find in an ordinary house?"

“Indeed.” Ke Min glanced at the clean and tidy room and the bed that had already been made, and nodded sincerely. “Master must be tired from traveling day and night. Please rest for a while. I will keep watch outside.”

Jiang Yan waved his hand, and Ke Min hung the cloak aside and left.

After Ke Min left, Jiang Yan did not rest, but sat on the edge of the bed, seemingly lost in thought.

Shu Yun had been standing for too long and wanted to pull up a chair to sit down, but her fingers went straight through the back of the chair and she grabbed nothing.

She felt a tightness in her chest.

Jiang Yan sat there silently, his eyes dark, looking away from her.

Shu Yun stood while Jiang Yan sat. Looking up at his long, curled eyelashes, his pale skin, and his quiet expression, she felt as if she were seeing Jiang Yan as a child again, small, obedient, and gentle.

Before they knew it, so much time had passed. Jiang Yan was now tall and thin, and incredibly strong.

She bent down and stretched out her finger, curiously trying to brush Jiang Yan's eyelashes with her fingertip. Unsurprisingly, her finger passed right through and didn't touch him.

Shu Yun smiled, her eyelashes long and curled, making her even prettier than a girl.

When she stared at Jiang Yan's eyelashes, Jiang Yan, who had been sitting quietly, suddenly looked up.

A pair of eyes fell into her gaze, obsidian-like, like a dazzling galaxy flowing backwards, the corners of her eyes drawing out a cool and beautiful arc, making Shu Yun's heart tremble.
