Chapter Thirty-Six

Gu Yu pushed open the door and entered. "My lord, Miss Wan Yang is outside and wishes to see the prefect."

The prefect sitting below was immediately scrutinized by Jiang Yan's gaze. He had learned about the relationship between the lord and that pretty young girl from Ke Min, and now he felt extremely uncomfortable, wishing he could jump up on the spot to refute it—"Heaven knows, I have no secret communication with that young girl, and I don't know why she suddenly came to find me."

Bathed in Jiang Yan's suddenly cold gaze, the prefect nervously dug a hole in the carving on the armrest. "Your Majesty, Your Majesty, I do not know why this Miss Wan Yang has come to see me."

Ke Min added fuel to the fire with schadenfreude, "If you don't contact others in private, how can anyone come looking for you? Tell me quickly, what did you say to Miss Wan Yang behind the master's back?"

Jiang Yan's dark eyes revealed no discernible thoughts, but the prefect could clearly feel the chill emanating from him, as if ice crystals were about to form.

The prefect stood up abruptly, his face full of sincerity, and said, "I am absolutely not lying."

"Kemin".

Ke Min stopped watching the show and quickly stood up, saying, "Your subordinate is here."

Jiang Yan glanced in the direction of the prefectural governor's mansion gate and ordered someone to remove the tea from the three of them. "Follow me to the back of the hall."

This means they're eavesdropping. How could His Majesty, a man of such high moral character, do something like this?

Seeing the prefect's incredulous expression, Ke Min raised his eyebrows—See? I didn't lie to you. That night, Niang was an exception for our Emperor. It's not surprising that His Majesty would do anything for her.

The two exchanged glances and curses silently.

Jiang Yan went behind the screen in the back hall and waited for the person to arrive. He really couldn't figure out what she wanted to see the prefect of Suizao.

Unlike the Chu Kingdom, which massacred entire cities after conquering Suizao to establish a bloodthirsty reputation, the Jing Kingdom expelled the remnants who refused to surrender and appeased the terrified people. However, they were required to change their nationality in order to continue living on this land.

To save money, the prefect did not demolish the original buildings of Lan Kingdom, but instead repaired them and continued to use them.

Shu Yun, who was about to leave after hearing that the prefect was not there, was stopped by a servant in the prefect's mansion, who said that the prefect had returned from his business trip.

Shu Yun was led forward by the servants of the prefectural governor's mansion. The pavilions and towers along the way were elegant and beautiful, with similar designs to the courtyards she had seen in the Wang family. The eaves were high and the beams were carved and painted, and it was impossible to tell that they were old objects that had been restored.

The newly conquered city was in dire need of reconstruction. Because of his personal vanity and selfishness, Shu Yun's goodwill towards this prefect increased even more.

The servants pushed open the door, and sitting prominently above the inner hall was the prefect who had won the respect and love of the people of Sui County and Zaoyang in a short period of time.

Shu Yun lifted her skirt and walked in, casually choosing a seat to sit down.

"How dare you!" The servant who led the way frowned and spoke up, "You didn't even bow to the Prefect, and just sat down on your own."

The prefect, who appeared to be sitting aloof and dignified, was actually flustered and timid inside. He forced a friendly smile and said, "It's alright, Miss Wan Yang is my friend. There's no need to stand on ceremony."

Don't be ridiculous. That's someone His Majesty likes, a future imperial concubine. Making her bow to him in front of His Majesty in the inner palace? Does he even want to live?

Shu Yun smiled slightly. "Thank you, Prefect."

If she were to perform a bow, it would be a bow befitting a god; who in the entire world could possibly accept such a gesture?

"Oh, we're all friends," the prefect waved his hand cheerfully, seizing the opportunity to curry favor with the future empress. "Miss Wan Yang, is there something you need from me?"
