Chapter Three

As expected.

Shu Yun curled her lips. The boy who was almost beaten to death in the dark alley refused to give in or beg for mercy, still retaining his pride deep down.

It would be best if she could inspire his enthusiasm for learning; otherwise, after Feng Ziyi rises to the rank of minister and achieves great success, she would not know what to do with him once she leaves.

"I am not good at teaching, but the Feng family has a private school. I will send you there to study. You can read any of the books in the study. If there is anything you don't understand, you can ask me anytime."

"You will come with me to the Feng residence at dawn tomorrow. After class, you will come back with me. I will prepare all the paper and pens for you. How well you learn is up to you."

Jiang Yan suddenly felt the gloom that had been weighing on him for so long being lifted, and hope was emerging from behind the thick black clouds. His intuition told him that this was his only chance to truly escape his slave status, and he had to seize it firmly.

He no longer wanted to live in the shadows, fighting with snakes and rats for food.

The next day, Feng Ziyi greeted his teacher respectfully as usual, but today was different because his teacher brought a boy with a pale face.

"Teacher, this is..."

“I’ve taken on a new disciple, who is your junior brother.”

"Junior brother?"

Feng Ziyi looked the boy up and down. His cheeks were slightly sunken, which clearly indicated that he did not come from a wealthy family, but his features were very delicate, especially his pair of black eyes, which were exceptionally beautiful.

He was wearing the same light blue Taoist robe as his master, but the size was that of a young boy. He was carrying a book box in his arms, and his eyes quietly returned the gaze when the other man looked him over.

Feng Ziyi frowned deeply. He disliked the boy from the first meeting, but he was unwilling to go against his teacher's wishes, so he sent someone to take this suddenly appearing junior brother to the Feng family's private school.

When Shu Yun was in class, she noticed that Feng Ziyi's brows were slightly furrowed. Even though he had tried to restrain himself in front of her, it was still easy to tell what he was thinking.

She slammed the book shut, her wrist slightly lowered as she exerted force, slamming it down on his desk. "You're distracted and your emotions are showing on your face. All the lessons I taught you before have been wasted."

Seeing that his usually aloof teacher was angry, Feng Ziyi quickly stood up and bowed, saying, "This disciple knows his mistake."

Shu Yun snorted lightly, "You haven't even realized you're wrong yet, and you're already saying you know you're wrong."

Feng Ziyi lowered his head even further.

"Alright, let's continue."

Feng Ziyi picked up the book, respectfully handed it back to the teacher, stopped thinking about the boy, and listened attentively to the lesson.

On the other side, Jiang Yan followed the people to the academy where the private school was located. As expected of the Feng family, which was the most prestigious in the area, the academy was very well built, with carved beams and painted rafters, and soaring eaves. Lush green bamboo was densely planted around the green tiles and white walls, creating a verdant and lush scene.

Many students had already arrived inside. The person who brought him here stepped forward and gave the teacher a few instructions, then ordered someone to add a desk and a cushion, which would be Jiang Yan's seat.

Several introductory lessons had already been taught, but Jiang Yan arrived much slower than the others. He didn't recognize many of the characters, so he kept quiet while the others read aloud, quickly matching the pronunciation with the words in the book.

When the reading stopped, the teacher looked at Jiang Yan with displeasure. Even if he was brought by Young Master Feng, he still had to follow the rules. What kind of behavior was it to remain silent while reading?

“The new student, you will read this article aloud by yourself.”

Jiang Yan stood up, picked up the book, and read it aloud.

The teacher slammed the ruler he was holding onto the desk, startling the students below who all shrank back and dared not utter a word. "Since you can read it, why were you silent just now?"

Jiang Yan lowered her eyes, "I didn't just now."

"You couldn't do it before, but you can now? You're so young and already lying," the teacher was furious. "Get out of here! You can come back to study when you admit your mistake."

Jiang Yan suddenly looked up, his dark eyes meeting the Master's gaze without flinching.

"I didn't lie."

Seeing that he was still unruly, the Master's anger intensified. "You didn't lie? What, are you trying to tell me that you memorized the pronunciation of the entire article after listening to it only once? Such a prodigy, let alone Pingyang, you can't find one in the entire Da Lan Dynasty."

The teacher pointed a ruler at the door and said, "You can't even come up with a reasonable lie. Get out of here."

Jiang Yan didn't say a word, put away the book in her hand and walked down the corridor.

He didn't want to cause trouble for Master Shu, but he felt that this teacher was far from what he had imagined, and he didn't even want to respectfully call him teacher.

Shouldn't all teachers in the world be like Master Shu?

Jiang Yan later realized that Shu Yun was indeed Shu Yun, the only one of her kind in the world, unmatched by anyone.
