It's Chinese New Year! This is Su Xingran's fifth New Year since returning home. Like every year, the New Year's Eve dinner is held at the Su family home. Doctor Huang and Duan Yuming came to the Su family home and ate New Year's Eve dinner with the family of three, staying up late to welcome the new year.
One day after the New Year, Dr. Huang received a telegram from Huang Taihe, asking him to call him so he could discuss something with Dr. Huang.
Dr. Huang went to Huang Tai'an's office at the police station and called Huang Taihe. After dialing Huang Taihe's office number, Dr. Huang waited for the other party to answer.
Huang Taihe had just returned from a meeting when the phone rang. He picked up the receiver. "Hello, this is Huang Taihe."
"It's me, Taihe. You sent a telegram asking me to call you. Is something wrong? Or has something happened at home?"
"Dad, it's nothing. I just wanted to call you during the New Year, but I heard that the roads in the village were blocked due to snow, so I'll ask you about your situation after the New Year."
Dr. Huang felt that something must be wrong, otherwise his eldest son wouldn't have sent a telegram. He figured it might be inconvenient to say it over the phone. Dr. Huang didn't press further, but instead chatted with Huang Taihe about everyday things.
"Dad, Xingran is in her second semester of senior year now, right? She'll be graduating from high school soon." Huang Taihe asked Su Xingran out of the blue.
Dr. Huang assumed he was just asking about Su Xingran casually. "Yes, Xingran will be starting her second semester of senior year."
"I heard that Xingran's grades are very good. Dad, tell her to study hard and maintain her good grades. She might be able to use the knowledge later."
Huang Taihe's few casual words, seemingly just a reminder, were meant to encourage Su Xingran to study and review diligently, memorizing the knowledge in case it came in handy later.
Dr. Huang gripped the microphone tightly, understanding his eldest son's implication. He urged Xingran to study hard, review, and memorize the key points. The college entrance exam had been suspended for ten years; the country was currently in a period of development and needed a large number of talented individuals.
"Father knows and will give Xingran some serious advice. Take good care of the family; Father's return home is getting closer."
The father and son chatted for a few more minutes before ending the call. Dr. Huang put down the receiver and remained deep in thought. He felt he needed to go home early; some things awaited him.
After returning home, Dr. Huang summoned Su Xingran. "Xingran, are you satisfied with your grades? If the college entrance exam were reinstated, do you think you could handle it?"
Hearing her master's words, Su Xingran stared at him intently. Did her master know something? Or had he received some news? Otherwise, he wouldn't have asked her this.
"Master, do you mean... that the college entrance examination might be reinstated? Is that what you mean?"
Dr. Huang nodded. "I called your brother Taihe a few days ago. He told me on the phone to remind you to study hard, review, and memorize the key points. I understand what he meant. He must have received some information in Beijing to send a telegram asking me to call him."
"Your older brother Taihe knows you're a senior in high school. Since he said that, the information must be correct. Xingran, your master is asking you if you've thought about yourself. If you get into university, what major would you choose?"
Su Xingran met her master's gaze. "Master, if the college entrance examination is reinstated and I pass it, I will choose a medical major, specializing in traditional Chinese medicine, but I will also study Western medicine, combining both."
"Alright, alright, Master supports your decision. Xingran, Master needs to return to Beijing ahead of schedule."
