"The food is ready, you can eat now!" Huang Ma walked from the kitchen into the living room and called everyone to eat.
There were too many people to fit at one table, so they split into two: one table for the men and children, and one table for the women. Three young girls sat side by side.
Su Xingran looked at the dishes on the table. Some she had seen and eaten before, while others she didn't recognize. But they should all be Beijing-style dishes.
"Xingran, Xiaoxue, these are all authentic dishes from Beijing. See if you can get used to them. I only know how to cook Beijing cuisine; I don't know how to cook other regional dishes," Huang Ma explained to Su Xingran and Xiao Xue.
“Aunt Huang, I’m fine with anything. You don’t need to worry about me not being used to it. Every place has its own unique flavors. Thank you for your hard work.”
Except for the roast duck, which was bought, all the other dishes were cooked by Huang Ma herself. She didn't let Su Xingran and the others help, and she single-handedly prepared two tables of dishes.
Xiao Xue had eaten Beijing cuisine several times and thought it was quite good. "Aunt Huang, I'm used to it. I've eaten here several times since last time."
After dinner, everyone sat back down in the living room to chat. Huang Taihe asked Su Xingran, "Xingran, which major did you choose?"
Su Xingran was a little puzzled. She looked at her master, assuming he had told his family. Huang Zhenhua naturally sensed Su Xingran's question and smiled, shaking his head.
"Brother Taihe, I chose Traditional Chinese Medicine, and I'll minor in Western Medicine later," Su Xingran told him truthfully.
Huang Tai and the others were somewhat surprised. They thought that Su Xingran would study medicine with her master and then major in another field in college.
"Father, you've been away from home in Beijing all this time, haven't you? You've been busy with this matter the whole time?" Huang Taihe asked Huang Zhenhua.
Huang Zhenhua nodded. "Yes, I went back to Beijing before because of this matter concerning the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine has been suppressed for many years, and many veteran TCM doctors have been sent to the countryside. When news broke that the college entrance examination would be reinstated, I came back and talked to those leaders for a long time."
"I also approached the president of Kyoto University, and he reinstated the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the university. However, there was a condition: I would be appointed as a specially appointed chief professor in the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Kyoto University. Also, your Uncle Gu is a teacher in the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine; he is Xingran's teacher."
"I can't be Xingran's teacher because of my age, and I don't want others to know that we have a teacher-student relationship, so as to avoid suspicion of nepotism," Huang Zhenhua said cheerfully.
Not only were the Huang and Gu families surprised, but even Su Xingran was astonished. She had never heard her master mention that he was going to become a professor of traditional Chinese medicine at Peking University.
Everyone in the room looked at Su Xingran. Huang Zhenhua was truly the first to act as a mentor in this regard. He actually agreed to teach for his apprentice, whereas he had repeatedly declined offers to become a tutor at other schools.
Su Xingran felt a little uneasy under their gazes. She didn't know that her master had taken a position at Peking University. Her master hadn't told them, and had kept it from her as well.
"Old man, tell me the truth, do I have a long-lost brother from Taizhou? And that person happens to be Xingran's father," Huang Taihe asked fearlessly.
Upon hearing this, everyone stopped looking at Su Xingran and turned their attention to Huang Zhenhua. Su Xingran was also somewhat bewildered by what she heard.
Huang Zhenhua's lips twitched. "Huang Taihe, can't you be a little more rational? Have you been secretly reading those melodramatic articles again?"
"Xingran, don't worry about your brother Taihe. He's a grown man, and he just loves watching those melodramatic dramas and reading those stories. Give him some material, and he'll start thinking about people's ancestors for eighteen generations."
