Chapter 17 The Villagers Learn of Su Xingran's Apprenticeship (2/2)

Oh dear, Huilan, you've given them too much! I'll just give them two; you can keep them for yourselves. These days, candies are in high demand; having one or two is already a luxury.

"It's alright, take it. There's more. Today is a happy occasion, so sharing some candy to celebrate is only right. Let's go home first, we can chat again when we have time." Su's mother thought it wasn't appropriate to stand there and talk, since both she and Su's father had taken the day off from work. Besides, Ranran was quite tired today, having gone to town early in the morning.

"Okay, okay, you all go home now. I'll go home too to pack my things and prepare lunch." After Aunt Jiazhu walked towards her house, Su Xingran and the others also went home.

When Su Xingran got home, she told her parents that she was a little tired and wanted to go back to her room to rest. Her mother knew she was tired and told her to go and rest, and that she would be called back for dinner.

Back in her room, Su Xingran put the red envelopes she received today and the box her master gave her into her spatial storage, planning to look at them later that night. She was really tired and wanted to sleep.

The Su family of three were busy with their own things, but things were in an uproar in the fields. It all started when a car arrived at the village at noon and headed straight for Dr. Huang's house. Curious villagers followed to see what was happening and saw a man get out of the car and carry things into Dr. Huang's house.

After waiting for a while without seeing anyone come out, some people couldn't stay any longer and left, while others, feeling uneasy because they couldn't see anyone, stayed and continued chatting there.

Finally, the people came out and it turned out to be the village chief and the brigade leader. Some were curious and nosy, so they asked what they were doing at Doctor Huang's house. The village chief, having heard what Doctor Huang meant, had nothing to hide and told them directly that Doctor Huang had taken Xingran from the Guomin family as his apprentice and had just held an apprenticeship ceremony.

Dr. Huang asked him and the brigade leader to be witnesses for the ceremony, and also invited the commune secretary, the town mayor, and the police captain to be witnesses. As soon as he said this, the crowd erupted in excitement.

Everyone knows Dr. Huang is a skilled doctor, but he always goes his own way. The villagers all know that when Dr. Huang comes to the village, he's brought in by car. He even bought the house he lives in right away, plus he earns a living from his consultations.

Some villagers wanted to take advantage of Dr. Huang, while others went even further. Seeing that Dr. Huang was single, they came up with all sorts of excuses, some saying they would introduce him to a wife, others saying they would adopt a son for him. But Dr. Huang never paid any attention to these offers and would not have any contact with anyone other than seeing patients. With the village chief keeping them in check, they dared not go too far.

Now, Doctor Huang has taken a twelve-year-old girl as his apprentice, and even held a formal apprenticeship ceremony, inviting officials to be witnesses. This is a genuine master-apprentice relationship.

The news spread like wildfire, and soon everyone working in the fields knew. The people in the fields were buzzing with discussion; some were envious, some congratulated, and some were jealous.

Old Man Su, Old Woman Su, and the eldest son's family in the old house all knew about it. Old Woman Su grumbled and cursed, wondering why that good-for-nothing was so lucky to be taken as an apprentice by Doctor Huang. She said it was heaven's fault, that the good-for-nothing didn't deserve such a position, and that if anyone should be taken as an apprentice, it should be her Wenli.
