The three children ran up to Su Xingran and said in unison, "Aunt Xingran, Jiaming, Jiaxin, and Jiawei wish you a happy birthday. Aunt Xingran, we brought you gifts. We bought these with our own New Year's money."
Su Xingran looked at the three children in front of her in surprise, "Aunt Xingran is already very happy that you came back, why did you spend money to buy gifts for Aunt Xingran?"
The older child, Jiaming, said, "Aunt Xingran, Dad bought Mom a present for her birthday too. Dad is a boy and Mom is a girl, so Dad bought Mom a present. I'm a boy and Aunt Xingran is a girl, so I want to buy Aunt Xingran a present too."
As the saying goes, children speak without restraint, and Huang Jiaming's words caused everyone in the main hall to burst into laughter. His sister-in-law, Liao Shishi, glared at Huang Taihe, thinking he was just spouting nonsense in front of the children.
Su Xingran rubbed her forehead. So this is what teaching by example means. She was now certain that the three men in the Huang family, like her father, were henpecked husbands.
Su Xingran didn't correct Huang Jiaming's statement. Their father was happy to raise them into good men from a young age. "If you use your New Year's money to buy gifts, then the New Year's money is gone. You are children now. If you need to buy gifts, Aunt Xingran should buy them for you."
"Aunt Xingran, we have so much money! Aunt Xingran, take a look at the gifts we bought, do you like them?"
The eldest sister-in-law, Liao Shishi, and the second sister-in-law, Chen Jieyi, couldn't stand it anymore. These monkeys would grab onto Xingran every time they saw her. If they kept talking like that, they wouldn't get to eat dinner.
"Go away, go away, give the gift to Aunt Xingran and then go play somewhere else. Mom and Second Aunt haven't given your Aunt Xingran the gift yet!" said the eldest sister-in-law Liao Shishi, and the second sister-in-law Chen Jieyi echoed.
The three children heard the two eldest women in the family speak. They quickly handed the gifts to Aunt Xingran, greeted everyone present, and ran out to play in the yard.
"Xingran, this is a gift your older brother and sister-in-law prepared for you. We wish you a happy birthday and a happy coming of age."
"Xingran, this is a gift your second brother and sister-in-law prepared for you. We also wish you a happy birthday and a happy coming of age."
Su Xingran accepted the gifts from her eldest and second sisters-in-law. "Thank you, eldest brother, eldest sister-in-law, second brother, and second sister-in-law."
"Dinner's ready! The dishes are all set on the table, so you can start eating," Aunt Huang called out as she came out of the kitchen.
Su Guomin and Duan Yuming had set up the table in advance: two tables, one for regular meals and the other a spare table kept at home.
Huang Ma, Su's father, Su's mother, and Duan Yuming carried dishes out of the kitchen. Su Xingran went into the kitchen to help carry the dishes. Gu Moyue and Xiao Xue also went into the kitchen to help.
Soon the dishes were placed on the table, a total of ten dishes, half of which were Beijing dishes made by Huang Ma and half of which were Northeastern dishes made by Su Mu.
Huang Taihe and Huang Taizhou, leading their wives, approached Su's parents. "Hello, Xingran's parents, welcome to our home."
Mr. and Mrs. Su smiled and said, "Hello to Ranran's eldest brother and sister-in-law, second brother and sister-in-law as well."
Hearing how they addressed him, Huang Zhenhua almost facepalmed. "You're all about the same age, just call me by my name!"
“Xingran’s parents are Su Guomin and Zeng Huilan,” Huang Zhenhua said, looking at his two sons and daughter-in-law.
