Most of the things that women find difficult to talk about are gynecological diseases, especially in this era when these women simply cannot bring themselves to speak about them. Su Xingran could only gently guide the woman in front of her, helping her to relax and let go of her burdens.
"Auntie, don't be nervous. We can talk about it slowly. I'm a woman just like you, only the age is different. Since you've come to see me for treatment, you need to tell me what's wrong with you so I can know what kind of problem you have."
Seeing Su Xingran's face flush red, the woman knew she should speak up, but these were things she found difficult to say. However, keeping it a secret was also tormenting, and she was too embarrassed to go to the hospital for fear of being seen by acquaintances.
Thinking of this, the woman still mustered up her courage and said to Su Xingran, "Doctor, I've been having discomfort in my lower body for quite some time. I've been too embarrassed to go to the hospital, and all the doctors outside are men, so I don't feel comfortable letting them see me."
The Huang family's pharmacy had several private rooms. Su Xingran led the woman to one of the innermost rooms. Inside, there was a spacious long bench, which Su Xingran had the woman lie down so she could examine her.
At first, the woman refused no matter what, but Su Xingran had to coax and cajole her to get her to lie down on the chair. When Su Xingran put on gloves to examine her, the woman covered her face in embarrassment, her whole body tense and stiff.
Wearing a homemade cloth mask and gloves, Su Xingran examined the woman. It was clearly a gynecological inflammation. After the examination, Su Xingran asked the woman to put on her pants. For her privacy, Su Xingran explained to her in the cubicle that it was an inflammation and that she needed medication for cleaning and anti-inflammatory purposes, as well as to pay attention to personal hygiene, among other things.
Su Xingran saw a few more patients, and time flew by; it was soon time for dinner. Huang Zhenhua stayed in the pharmacy to help out, waiting for Su Xingran to finish so they could go home together.
Su Xingran was quite busy today compared to her usual time at the pharmacy. Huang Zhenhua asked with a smile, "Xingran, how are you feeling today? This is your first official consultation at a pharmacy since you came to Beijing."
Su Xingran smiled and said, "Master, I feel quite at ease this way. This way, I can accumulate experience and not forget what I've learned."
Huang Zhenhua nodded in satisfaction. His apprentice truly had a different perspective. Good, it's precisely because of people like this that society can progress further. The master and apprentice rode their bicycles along the road, chatting. An outsider might have mistaken them for a grandfather and granddaughter hurrying home. From a distance, the scene was a beautiful picture.
When Huang Ma got home, the rice was already cooked, and all that was left was to stir-fry the vegetables so they could be served. Huang Ma learned that Su Xingran had started seeing patients at the pharmacy today, and quite a few at that.
Huang Ma was proud and happy for Su Xingran. She cooked a pot of chicken soup that night and served two big chicken legs into Su Xingran's bowl at dinner.
Upon seeing the two chicken drumsticks, Su Xingran quickly picked them up, intending to offer them to her master and Aunt Huang. However, both her master and Aunt Huang refused. Aunt Huang pressed Su Xingran's hand down, saying, "Xingran, these two chicken drumsticks are a celebration and a reward for you. Today was your first time seeing patients at the pharmacy, and you saw so many people."
Huang Zhenhua agreed, "Xingran, Huang Ma is right, this is a celebration and reward for you. Hurry up and eat the two chicken drumsticks. I think you've lost some weight recently, eat more meat to replenish yourself."
Watching the two of them chatting and laughing, Su Xingran knew that she was definitely going to have to eat those two chicken legs. In the end, Su Xingran ate two chicken legs and drank two bowls of chicken soup, until her stomach was round and bulging.
