For some reason, Su Xingran felt that she had seen this figure somewhere before. But she had seen many figures in military uniforms before; she had seen them during those two wars, where the logistics doctors and nurses were all wearing the uniforms of the Chinese army.
Su Xingran stared blankly at the retreating figure, then, regaining her composure, continued flipping through the newspaper. She read several more pages, each containing stories of her master and mistress, but none of them included photographs.
Su Xingran also found a photograph under the cabinet; it showed a middle-aged woman holding a child. The photograph was from many years ago and was somewhat blurry.
Just then, Gu Moli returned from taking a shower and saw Su Xingran squatting on the floor looking at something. He went over, helped Su Xingran up, and closed the cabinet door.
Gu Moli pulled Su Xingran up and said, "Ranran, don't bother tidying up anymore. I'll help you tidy up tomorrow when we have time. It's getting late, let's get some rest."
Su Xingran didn't necessarily have to tidy up; she stopped when Gu Moli called her. Su Xingran glanced at the watch on the table; it was past nine o'clock at night. She usually went to bed around ten o'clock.
Su Xingran went outside to wash her hands and returned to her room, where she saw Gu Moli placing two large red dragon and phoenix candles on the dressing table. Su Xingran remembered that in ancient times, candles were lit on the wedding night, and even now, many families still do this.
Gu Moli went out for a while, and when he returned, he had a wine pot and two small wine cups in his hands. Gu Moli lit the dragon and phoenix red candles and pulled Su Xingran to sit on the edge of the bed.
Gu Moli handed one of the wine glasses to Su Xingran and said, "Ranran, let's drink a toast together as husband and wife."
Su Xingran took the cup, and Gu Moli bent down slightly. Their hands clasped together. Su Xingran drank from the cup in Gu Moli's hand, and Gu Moli drank from the cup in Su Xingran's hand.
After drinking the nuptial wine, Gu Moli put the wine cup back on the stool. Gu Moli turned around and saw Su Xingran lying back on the bed. Su Xingran was sleeping on the inner side of the bed, while Gu Moli lay down on the outer side.
Su Xingran stiffened slightly when Gu Moli lay down, but she quickly composed herself. Gu Moli, of course, also sensed Su Xingran's change; he himself was quite nervous. Even though they had obtained their marriage certificate last year, tonight was their wedding night, the first time they would truly have physical intimacy.
The faint fragrance emanating from Su Xingran caused Gu Moli's restrained impulse to break down. He rolled over and positioned himself above Su Xingran, the soft candlelight allowing him to see her clearly.
Su Xingran looked at Gu Moli, who was looking down at her. She saw the reflection in the man's eyes, and her tense mood relaxed.
Gu Moli felt Su Xingran's body completely relax. A smile graced his face, his eyes filled with undisguised love. Looking at those alluring lips, Gu Moli leaned down and kissed them…
She didn't know what time it was, but the room fell silent. Su Xingran was so sleepy she could barely keep her eyes open, and slowly drifted off to sleep. In her sleep, Su Xingran seemed to hear a voice.
The voice said, "Xingran and Moli, congratulations on your marriage! May you live a long and happy life together. Your life is finally complete." However, Su Xingran was too tired and sleepy to investigate the voice further.
