Chapter 3 Informing Parents (2/2)

The next morning, Su Xingran woke up and went out of her room. No one was home; she assumed her mother had gone to work. She went to the yard to fetch some water to brush her teeth and wash her face. Just as she was about to go back inside, the yard gate opened, and her mother walked in, followed by an elderly man—the village doctor, Dr. Huang. "Ranran, you're up! How are you feeling today? I went to find Dr. Huang to take a look at you. He wasn't home yesterday."

"Go inside and let Doctor Huang take a look at you, Mom. I understand." "Hello, Grandpa Huang," Su Xingran greeted Doctor Huang.

Dr. Huang nodded. "Xingran, is anything bothering you?" "Grandpa Huang, nothing's bothering me." "Then Grandpa Huang will disinfect and change your bandage. The wound still needs bandaging to prevent infection. Disinfect it every other day, and you won't need the bandage anymore after a week." "I understand, thank you Grandpa Huang," Su Xingran replied obediently.

After seeing Doctor Huang off and closing the door, Su's mother had just stepped into the courtyard when there was a loud knocking on the outer gate. Inside the house, Su Xingran sneered and muttered, "They've finally come, just as I thought."

"Sister-in-law, is your Xingran awake?" A somewhat grating voice rang out. "Sister-in-law, my Xingran is awake," Su's mother replied with a smile, assuming her sister-in-law was concerned about Xingran. "Your Xingran is awake? Have you forgotten who saved her? It was my Wenli who saved your daughter. Now that your daughter is awake, you've forgotten to thank my Wenli."

Last night, Su's mother learned from Ranran that the person who saved her wasn't Wenli. She suspected her sister-in-law was trying to extort something from them today. She was a gentle person and wouldn't say anything harsh. "Sister-in-law," she said, "Ranran just woke up. We'll talk about it after she recovers."

Sister-in-law, what do you mean by that? Are you trying to renege on your promise? Everyone, come and see how ungrateful and heartless the Su family is! My Wenli saved their Su Xingran, and they didn't even come to thank her. Now they don't want to acknowledge her.

As the aunt's loud voice boomed, the villagers who hadn't yet started work gathered around, most of them women who were doing housework at home.

When the aunt saw that a crowd had gathered, she began her spectacular performance, which was even more captivating than a traditional opera. Her story was all about how Su's parents refused to acknowledge Su Wenli's kindness in saving Su Xingran, calling the whole family ungrateful and saying that saving a dog would have been better than saving Su Xingran.

Seeing that no one stopped her, the eldest aunt became more and more enthusiastic, spitting everywhere. Su's mother tried to speak up to stop her but couldn't get a word in edgewise, and her face turned red with anxiety. One of the people surrounding her, who looked sharp and mean, said, "Su's second wife, this is wrong of you. Wenli saved your Xingran. Instead of sending something to thank her, you don't even acknowledge her kindness. I never thought you were this kind of person. You've been putting on such a nice act all this time."

This person had always treated Su's mother badly. She saw that Su's father doted on Su's mother and always put her first. He was busy working outside and would help Su's mother with housework when he got home. So she was jealous of Su's mother. They were all women, so why did Su's mother get such good treatment from a man?

Seeing that someone was helping to attack Su's mother, the eldest aunt became even more excited. "Second son's family, if you don't come up with a hundred yuan today, this matter won't be over. Let's see how your family of ingrates will be perceived in the future. How will your Su Xingran talk about her husband's family?" After saying that, she looked at Su's mother with a smug look.
