"Yes, that's right," Old Mrs. Su realized. "How can I get Su Xingran to take that packet of powder? And how can I stop my second son and his wife from interfering with Aunt He's ritual?"
For a moment, both Old Lady Su and Zhao Xiaohua were stumped by this problem. Old Man Su looked at the two bewildered women and shook his head. It seemed that only he, the head of the family, could come up with a solution.
Didn't you just kill your rooster? Stew it with plenty of water, and then send some over to your second son's family. They say it's not easy for the family to stew a chicken, and since it's their son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter, they want to send some to help them recover.
"Old man, are you out of your mind? Giving chicken soup to that ungrateful family of our second son? Isn't it better for us to eat it ourselves?" Zhao Xiaohua agreed with her mother-in-law. "Why not drink the chicken soup ourselves and instead give it to the second son's family? My father-in-law must be out of his mind."
Old Man Su frowned; he'd never seen such a stupid person. "I told you to put the powder in the chicken soup and send it to the second son's family. If all three of them drank the poisoned soup, wouldn't they all be unconscious? Wouldn't that tie up that obstacle? And if the second son and his wife were also unconscious, wouldn't no one interfere with Aunt He's ritual?"
Old Man Su's three questions finally enlightened Old Woman Su and Zhao Xiaohua. "That's it! Put the medicine in the chicken soup and send it to the second son's family. They'll drink the medicated soup and the chicken meat, and they'll both pass out. Then the plan can be carried out! Old man, you're so clever to have come up with this idea!"
It's a bit of a waste, though, since there's chicken soup and chicken meat. Zhao Xiaohua looked regretful. Her family hadn't eaten chicken in ages, and now that they finally had some, they had to give half away.
"Don't waste it. If we didn't do it this way, we could have gotten the medicine. If we can't get the medicine, the plan can't be carried out. Aren't you afraid of that evil spirit? What if it happens again, like the stomachache and diarrhea a few days ago? Can you handle it?" Old Mrs. Su said to Zhao Xiaohua with exasperation.
The thought of that miserable day made Zhao Xiaohua shudder. She could still feel a faint stench in her house, and people would laugh and whisper behind her back when she went out; she always had to walk away from them.
In the afternoon, Old Mrs. Su stewed a rooster to make soup. She took an earthenware pot, filled it with the soup and chicken meat, and to show her sincerity, she gritted her teeth and put in two large chicken legs. Looking at the pot full of soup and chicken, her heart ached. She took out the packet of medicine powder, carefully opened it, poured it into the chicken soup, and stirred it well with a spoon.
She examined the chicken soup, then checked the sides of the jar to make sure there were no problems before putting the lid back on. She planned to deliver it to her second son's family later. Thinking about how they had fainted after eating the soup, Old Mrs. Su smiled.
Su Xingran was unaware that her family was being targeted, and that a conspiracy against her was being secretly carried out. She was at her master's house, listening to him explain the essentials of traditional Chinese medicine, specifically the four diagnostic methods of observation, auscultation, inquiry, and palpation.
Old Mrs. Su, seeing that it was almost time, carried the earthenware pot containing chicken soup towards Su Xingran's house. Reaching the door, she saw it was closed, so she put the pot down and knocked. The door banged loudly.
Mrs. Su was cooking dinner in the kitchen when she heard a loud knocking at the door. She put down the vegetables she was washing, dried her hands, and went to open it. She was a little surprised to see Old Mrs. Su holding an earthenware pot in her hands. Even if she disliked Old Mrs. Su, she wouldn't show it. "Mother, what brings you here?" she asked.
