Su Wenxing was listless at work every day; he had just been scolded by his team leader again. He knew that if his girlfriend weren't the workshop director's daughter, his recent performance would definitely have resulted in pay cuts and jeopardize his chances of getting a permanent position. He didn't dare go to Xiaoxue, afraid she would ask about the "three turns and one sound" (referring to a series of turns and a radio) and the wedding.
Xiao Xue, the workshop director's daughter whom Su Wenxing was thinking about, was standing at the intersection with a man. She looked a little disheveled, and her bicycle was overturned beside her. Xiao Xue had something to do today and had taken the day off. She was riding her bicycle past an intersection when, just as she was about to turn right, a child suddenly ran out from around the bend. She saw the child, panicked, forgot to brake, swerved the handlebars to the left, lost her balance, and fell to the ground, bicycle and all.
Just as she was about to fall to the ground, a pair of large hands grabbed her and pulled her upwards. She was pulled back, but she stumbled into a warm embrace, and her bicycle fell to the ground. After the initial shock subsided, she belatedly realized she was still in someone's arms. Startled, she quickly pulled away from the embrace and took a few steps back.
Gu Moting's arms suddenly felt empty. He instinctively clenched his fists, the air in his hands still seeming to carry a faint scent of the woman's fragrance. He recognized her immediately; this reckless girl who had almost gotten hurt—he had saved her six months ago. That night, after rescuing her, he was in a hurry to meet up with his teammates, so he could only take her to the hospital, pay the bills, and then leave.
Xiao Xue took a few steps back and looked up. A tall and handsome figure came into her view. The man was wearing black trousers, a light military green jacket over a white shirt. He had a buzz cut, a sharply defined and handsome face, a high nose, and a pair of bright, piercing eyes. When he looked at her with those deep eyes, she felt as if she were being drawn in.
She quickly looked away, unable to meet his gaze again. She took a breath and then exhaled softly. "Thank you for saving me. If it weren't for you, I would definitely be injured today. I don't know where you work. My family and I will treat you to a meal another day to express our gratitude." Just now, when this man was looking at her, her heart had inexplicably been beating very fast. She had never felt this way before. She didn't know what was wrong with her, but she was a woman in a relationship and about to get married, so she had to keep her distance from other men.
A crisp sound reached his ears, causing Gu Moting's ears to twitch. A faint trace rippled through his otherwise calm heart. He had intended to refuse, but instead said, "I'm here on business from out of town. I'll be staying in the town's guesthouse for a while."
Gu Moting walked over and picked up Xiao Xue's bicycle, noticing that the front of the bike was slightly tilted. He clamped the front wheel between his legs and straightened the bike. "When you fell, the front of your bike was tilted. I've straightened it now. You can try riding it and see if there's any difference."
Xiao Xue walked to the bicycle, straddled it, and pedaled, taking a spin around the road. She stopped, smiled at Gu Moting, and said, "Okay, the bike's straight. I have to go now. In a few days, my family and I will visit you at the guesthouse and treat you to a meal. By the way, what's your name? My name is Xiao Xue, Xiao as in 'beyond the dust,' and Xue as in 'auspicious snow heralds a bountiful year.'"
My name is Gu Moting. Gu means "to repay kindness," Mo means "to adhere to the rules," and Ting means "swift as lightning." You have things to do; you can go ahead and do them.
Okay, Comrade Gu Moting, thank you again for saving me! Goodbye!
Goodbye, Comrade Xiao Xue. I look forward to our third meeting. Gu Moting said these words softly, and Xiao Xue rode away on her bicycle, not hearing what Gu Moting said.
