"Pei'er—" Liu Ercui, who was following behind Qin Hanshu, rushed out in a flash.
"Girl, what happened, girl?" Liu Ercui was terrified, her face pale. She hurriedly picked up Pei'er, "Infirmary, take her to the infirmary..."
"Sister-in-law Er Cui, wait a moment," Qin Hanshu put down Zhou Chi and checked on Pei'er.
"She must have choked." Qin Hanshu quickly turned Pei'er over so that her head was tilted downwards and patted her back with one hand.
A moment later, something rolled out of Pei'er's mouth.
Pei'er immediately found it easier to breathe, her face gradually returned to normal, and she weakly called out, "Mom."
Liu Ercui hugged her daughter tightly, bursting into tears, "You scared me to death..."
The situation today was indeed dangerous; a few minutes later, Pei'er would probably be dead.
Upon closer inspection, the thing that rolled out was a cashew nut.
These cashews are imported; Qin Hanshu exchanged foreign exchange certificates with someone to buy two small cans.
I just took one out as a tea snack.
Zhou Chi and Pei'er were too young to eat, so they only gave Yue'er a handful.
Liu Ercui also instructed Yue'er not to feed Pei'er and Zhou Chi, lest they choke.
The moon...
Qin Hanshu and Liu Ercui then began looking for Yue'er, and finally found her behind the curtains.
Qin Hanshu frowned and said, "Yue'er, what are you doing hiding there? Didn't you notice your sister choking?"
The moon slowly emerged from behind the curtains, her little face already streaked with tears.
She shuffled toward the adults, looking at Qin Hanshu with a frightened expression.
Seeing her like this, Qin Hanshu swallowed back the question she was about to ask.
Since they're all from the Zhang family anyway, she decided to shut up and let Liu Ercui ask the questions; she wouldn't get involved.
Liu Ercui held her daughter, inwardly blaming Yue'er for not calling out in time, but she still had to patiently find out the situation first.
"Moon, tell Mom, where did the cashew in your sister's mouth come from?"
Yue'er just cried, her cries were very soft, and her sobs sounded particularly aggrieved, but her tears flowed like a flood, dripping from her chin to the ground.
Qin Hanshu clicked her tongue in amazement; this child's tear ducts were truly well-developed.
Liu Ercui was getting impatient and raised her voice, saying, "Stop crying! Answer me!"
Yue'er was so frightened that she stopped crying, but tears were still streaming down her face as she stared blankly at Liu Ercui.
She looked so pitiful.
Liu Ercui took a deep breath.
She looked down at her daughter; her little face was listless, and her chubby body was curled up in her arms, motionless. Her heart ached terribly.
She forced herself not to be angry and said gently, "Moon, did you feed your sister cashews?"
This time, Yue'er finally spoke, stammering, "She...she insisted on eating..."
"You're going to give it to her if she insists on eating it?!" Liu Ercui said angrily. "Didn't I tell you that you can't give food to your younger siblings? Pei'er is still little, and she'll definitely be tempted if she sees you eating. So just turn your back and eat it secretly!"
Perhaps sensing Liu Ercui's anger, Pei'er also started to cry.
Qin Hanshu took Pei'er from Liu Ercui's arms, "Come here, Auntie will hold you."
Liu Ercui handed Pei'er over, then got up, walked to Yue'er, and squatted down.
"Even if you fed Pei'er something she shouldn't have and she choked, you should have called us in loudly! What are you doing hiding? Huh?"
This is what angered Liu Ercui the most.
It's okay to get into trouble, the important thing is to tell an adult right away.
Zhou Chi is such a young child, he can't even speak yet, but he knows that Pei'er is in trouble and he has to go out to call for an adult.
Yue'er is already four years old, doesn't she understand this principle?
"I...I'm scared...Mommy, I'm scared..." Yue'er said with a pout, looking very aggrieved.
This left Liu Ercui seething with anger but unable to vent it.
If it were her sons who did this, she would have given them a good beating long ago.
But not with Yue'er. Yue'er is like a living ancestor in her family. She can't be hit or scolded. She has to carefully consider her tone when saying anything.
Otherwise, the men in the family will get angry with her.
Even so, Yue'er was still as timid as a mouse, always doing things with trepidation, which made others think she was a bad person.
Liu Ercui glared at Yue'er for a while, but had no other choice. She decided to wait for Zhang Lei to come back before doing anything else.
She fully expected the man to side with her this time, but after hearing what had happened, Zhang Lei remained silent for a long time before finally speaking up for Yue'er:
"It's normal for children to want to cover up their mistakes when they are afraid of being punished."
"Er Cui, you should reflect on yourself. Have you been too strict with Yue'er? That's why she's afraid to tell you when something happens to her."
Liu Ercui stared at Zhang Lei in disbelief for a long time before she came to her senses and said dryly, "Your own daughter almost died today."
Zhang Lei glanced at his daughter, who was eating steamed egg custard with a spoon. Her face was rosy, and she didn't look like someone who had been through life and death.
"Your daughter is perfectly fine, don't curse her."
Liu Ercui suddenly found herself speechless.
I can't even muster the energy to get angry.
She felt a wave of weakness, as if all her energy had been drained from her body.
"By the way, I noticed that Yue'er's schoolbag has a hole somewhere. Could you sew it up for her when you have time?"
Yue'er is already in kindergarten, and Zhang Lei personally bought her schoolbag from the store.
Zhang Lei has never cared about his own child in this way.
Even someone as busy as him could notice that Yue'er's schoolbag had a tear.
