Chapter 23 "What do you say?"

Yang Aizhen sent the letter a few days after she arrived in Haowan Village. Considering the timing, it should also be the time when everything she did before leaving the capital was taking effect.

Qin Hanshu guessed that, given Yang Aizhen's feudal personality, she should have been terrified by the series of unusual events, but he didn't expect her to have the energy to write to him so quickly.

The letter contained normal greetings, and when it mentioned family matters, it only briefly mentioned that the family had been robbed.

It seems they didn't suspect her.

However, Hu Wenwen's job application fell through, and Yang Aizhen and the Hu family seemed certain it was because of her. In the letter, Yang Aizhen subtly brought up the matter, her words conveying a sense of criticism.

Finally, it was mentioned that Hu Wenwen had already gone to the countryside, to the Corps Farm in Hongxing Commune, which was 60 miles away from Haowan Village.

To make amends for his mistake and ask for Hu Wenwen's forgiveness, Qin Hanshu should visit Hu Wenwen with gifts and apologize to her.

Qin Hanshu crumpled the letter into a ball without any expression.

"Han Shu!" Ma Chaoyang called out outside Qin Han Shu's cave dwelling, "I traded a hen at a villager's house, and I'm treating you to hen soup today!"

Qin Hanshu walked out, while the old hen that Ma Chaoyang was carrying was still jumping and flapping around.

Ma Chaoyang grinned and said, "I promised you'd treat me if you bought the bicycle. I searched around the cave dwelling but couldn't find anything good, so I spent seven yuan to buy an old hen that doesn't lay eggs."

Qin Hanshu chuckled, "I thought you were just joking."

"No way!" Ma Chaoyang said to the others, "Let's all eat together!"

Although Qin Hanshu appeared to be the wealthiest person at the educated youth settlement, Ma Chaoyang was the most generous spender, which was no surprise to everyone.

However, most people voluntarily brought out some food, even if it wasn't as good as an old hen, it was enough to make up the numbers.

However, Ma Chaoyang specifically instructed that Qin Hanshu was not allowed to take anything out, since he had specially invited her to this meal.

Qin Hanshu readily agreed.

Liao Yujie, standing at the entrance of the cave dwelling, combing her long braid, said sourly upon seeing this, "Anyone who didn't know better would think someone's in postpartum confinement, you old hen..."

Before she could finish speaking, an unidentified object grazed just above her head, the force of the wind making a few strands of her hair stand on end.

Liao Yujie stiffly turned her head to look and found that the unidentified object was a clod of earth as hard as a rock. If it had been a little off-center and hit her on the forehead, it would probably have left a bloody hole.

Her teeth chattered as she stared at Qin Hanshu in terror.

"Shut your stinking mouth, or I'll really hit you on the head."

Qin Hanshu was already annoyed after reading Yang Aizhen's letter, and Liao Yujie just had to walk right into the line of fire.

Liao Yujie opened and closed her mouth a few times, but in the end, she couldn't say anything. Her face was pale as she went into the cave and never came out again.

Ma Chaoyang and the others heard about what happened that day afterward, but seeing Qin Hanshu take action today was a different experience.

Although the male educated youths didn't say it aloud, they all thought Qin Hanshu was the most beautiful and the most refined and elegant among all the female educated youths.

But at this moment, seeing Qin Hanshu's decisive and efficient way of throwing the clods of dirt, and the icy coldness in his eyes, they all shivered involuntarily.

Only Lin Zhiheng glanced at Qin Hanshu with surprise and praised, "Your aim is quite good. With some training, you might become a skilled marksman."

Instantly, Qin Hanshu's gentle smile returned. "You flatter me."

The others couldn't help but click their tongues in amazement; the way these two faces switched was incredibly smooth.

The discussion about playing PUBG resumed.

Zhang Yao thought for a moment and suggested, "How about we raise them for a few days and eat them after the autumn harvest? We haven't done much work lately, it feels like a waste to eat them so well. Of course, this is just a suggestion, it's up to you what you think."

Ma Chaoyang looked at Qin Hanshu.

Qin Hanshu nodded and said, "I have no objection. Let's wait until the busy farming season to eat it."

The others all said they didn't care.

Xue Xinrui had already brought back chicks from the commune's livestock station, and Qin Hanshu had built a chicken coop with a fence next to the vegetable garden. Other chicken farmers followed suit.

The courtyard is now almost entirely filled with vegetable gardens and chicken coops, where chickens cluck every day, making it quite lively.

That same night after catching the chicks, Qin Hanshu lied and claimed that one of her chickens had run away, when in fact she had put it into her spatial dimension.

The chickens that were put in the space grew up overnight and then laid three eggs every day without fail.

The old hen was temporarily thrown into the chicken coop next to the vegetable garden.

The busiest time of the year, the autumn harvest, is fast approaching in Haowan Village.

The vast rice paddies on the riverside plain are ripe and ready for harvest.

Before the official start of the harvest, the brigade held a mobilization meeting.

On the threshing ground, the Party Secretary changed into the same short jacket as everyone else, put on a headscarf, and had a sickle tied to his waist. He led everyone in shouting slogans with great enthusiasm.

After shouting for twenty minutes, tasks were assigned to everyone, and the production team leader led them to work in the fields.

The autumn harvest is a major event, and after the rice is harvested, winter wheat must be planted in a hurry. In order to save time, everyone in the brigade has to participate, and even some young women who don't usually work in the fields have to find work to do.

The educated youth always worked in their own groups, not with the villagers, and this time was no different.

The educated youth were divided into male and female groups. Xue Xinrui was in charge of the male group, and Zhang Yao was in charge of the female group.

Each group was assigned a set amount of work. If they didn't finish, they would have to work overtime. Even if it meant sacrificing their mealtime, they had to complete the assigned tasks by the end of the day.

The rice stalks were prickly, so Qin Hanshu was fully armed, not only wearing long sleeves and trousers, but also work gloves, and even covering her face with a large handkerchief to cover her mouth and nose, leaving only her eyes exposed.

It was a bit hot, but she carried a water bottle with her, filled with spring water from her spatial realm, which she would use to wipe her face from time to time to cool down.

Holding the rice stalk with the left hand, the right hand uses a sickle to pull along the bottom of the stalk, cutting off a handful of rice. The rice is then placed on a rope made of straw, tied into a bundle, and transported to the threshing ground by designated personnel.

The sound of shoveling rice echoed throughout the rice paddies.

"Liao Yujie, what are you dawdling about!"

Zhang Kangmei was the fastest cutter in the female educated youth group. When she looked back, she saw that although the others were slower, they were all clearly making an effort. Only Liao Yujie was working intermittently, falling far behind the others, and was obviously just dawdling.

Zhang Kangmei couldn't stand lazy people the most, so she immediately unleashed a torrent of criticism.

"You think I don't know what you're up to? You want to wait until everyone else has finished before you help? Dream on! Let me tell you, you're not allowed to eat until you finish!"

Liao Yujie wasn't afraid of Zhang Kangmei, who only knew how to reason. She spat and retorted with her hands on her hips, "Who do you think you are? What right do you have to stop me from eating?! My back hurts today, so I can't work. What are you going to do about it?"

"So what?" Qin Hanshu sneered, brandishing the scythe in her hand. "What do you mean, 'so what'?"
