Grandma Hu made quite a fuss when she moved; she took all of Hu Dayong's belongings with her, from large items like tables and chairs to small items like a box of matches.
Yang Aizhen sensed something was wrong and said, "Mom, they've all moved out, and the house is empty now."
Her household registration is here, and her food rations are here too. She'll have to come back every month to buy food rations, so she'll probably stay here for two or three days a month.
After leaving, Old Lady Hu had no intention of letting Yang Aizhen come back.
It was a bit of a pity to give up the grain rations for urban residents, but Grandma Hu had considered it carefully. She realized that having a grain ration book wasn't free; she still had to pay for it!
Why not change her household registration to rural area and let Yang Aizhen go out to earn work points!
That's right, Old Lady Hu had already planned to transfer Yang Aizhen's household registration to her own home.
However, this cannot be revealed at this time.
She smiled kindly and said, "I don't want to move so much stuff either, but the furniture in my house in the countryside is decades old. I'm afraid you won't be used to it when you go back."
His words and actions all seemed to be for Yang Aizhen's sake.
Seeing that Yang Aizhen was still frowning, Old Mrs. Hu suppressed her impatience and compromised, saying, "Then let's leave two chairs and make the kang (heated brick bed) ready, so you'll have a place to sleep when you come back, okay?"
In the past, Old Mrs. Hu had never yielded to Yang Aizhen. Yang Aizhen enjoyed her mother-in-law's indulgence and felt very gratified.
The neighbors were all surprised to see Yang Aizhen going back to the countryside with Old Lady Hu, but no one went up to ask her anything.
Yang Aizhen's weakness and lack of common sense have deeply impressed people, and they feel nothing but contempt for her.
Only Grandma Wu, after much deliberation, pulled Yang Aizhen aside and said, "Your mother-in-law doesn't seem easy to get along with. Why are you going to the countryside with her?"
Yang Aizhen didn't want to talk much with Grandma Wu. "My mother-in-law is a good person. Going to the countryside with her will save me a lot of trouble."
Grandma Hu kept a close eye on Yang Aizhen. After Grandma Wu and Yang Aizhen exchanged a few words, Grandma Hu shouted loudly, "Aizhen, it's time to go."
Yang Aizhen happily walked over to Old Lady Hu.
Grandma Wu shook her head helplessly.
I really don't know what's going on in Yang Aizhen's head.
Old Mrs. Hu specifically asked her cousin from the countryside to come over with a donkey cart to move things. The donkey cart was parked at the entrance of the alley.
After the things were moved, Old Mrs. Hu took Yang Aizhen's hand and got on the donkey cart, and Hu's cousin cracked his whip.
The donkey cart slowly set off.
As Yang Aizhen watched the familiar scenery around her gradually recede into the distance, a sudden unease arose in her heart.
She moved slightly, and Old Mrs. Hu immediately noticed.
Grandma Hu held her hand tightly and asked gently, "What's wrong, daughter-in-law?"
Yang Aizhen opened her mouth and said, "Mom, I think I should..."
The donkey cart suddenly jolted, interrupting Yang Aizhen's words.
Grandma Hu called out loudly to her cousin who was driving the carriage, "Slow down, your aunt is delicate and can't stand the bumpy ride."
After listening to Grandma Hu's words, Hu's cousin indeed became much more composed.
Grandma Hu then said to Yang Aizhen, "After we go back, you won't have to shovel manure to earn wages like you did in the city. Bingbing has plenty of strength, and I can do it too. Our work points will be enough to live on."
"You can just stay home and tidy up, do some light work."
Yang Aizhen swallowed back what she wanted to say.
Yes, even drinking water costs money in the city. She can't rest for a day; she has to keep shoveling manure to make a living.
Once you go to the countryside, you'll never have to shovel manure again.
Yang Aizhen's unease gradually subsided.
Grandma Hu glanced at Yang Aizhen out of the corner of her eye and smiled confidently.
The donkey cart turned a corner and disappeared around the street.
Qin Hanshu stared at the empty street corner for a while before looking away.
It's likely that Yang Aizhen will never return after this trip.
Old Mrs. Hu may seem like she's just being unreasonable and argumentative, but she's actually quite shrewd and shrewd.
Hu Dayong's cunning is at most half that of Old Lady Hu.
Yang Aizhen went back to the countryside with her, where she could only be manipulated and treated however Old Lady Hu wanted.
Qin Hanshu thought Yang Aizhen would remarry soon, and had even planned a way to sever legal ties with Yang Aizhen this time. Who knew that she would go with Old Lady Hu and send herself into the tiger's den.
But it's good, it saves her trouble.
Another day passed before Qin Hanshu finally appeared at the courtyard house.
The neighbors were very surprised and came forward to ask.
Qin Hanshu said, "My mother sent a telegram a while ago saying she was sick and asked me to come back to see her, but I couldn't get leave at the time, so I only came back now."
"Oh, Han Shu, you have no idea that a huge change has happened in your family!"
Qin Hanshu looked bewildered.
The neighbors talked about Hu Dayong's crime and execution, Yang Aizhen's return to the countryside with Old Lady Hu, and a series of other things.
"Han Shu, your stepfather treated you badly; he got what he deserved!"
"Yes! God has eyes!"
"You have no idea, right after you left, your family..."
She also mentioned that her house had been emptied out.
Qin Hanshu looked bewildered and incredulous, muttering, "How could this be..."
Someone muttered in a mysterious tone, "It might be your father..."
Before he could finish speaking, he was interrupted, "Don't talk nonsense, that's feudal superstition!"
No one continued the topic.
After exchanging pleasantries with everyone for a while, Qin Hanshu entered Grandma Wu's house.
Grandma Wu said, "Xiao Shu, your mother... sigh, you know what kind of person she is, I can't persuade her no matter what I say."
