The methods used back then weren't as advanced, and there weren't as many options. If it had happened later, they would have been able to see through Jiang Lili's lies much sooner.
Jiang Lili was eventually sentenced to death, but it was discovered that she was pregnant, and the child in her womb saved her life.
The person in charge was naturally promoted, and the celebration banquet was held at the Jade Restaurant, but that's another story.
After finishing his work, Gu Xichao rushed home.
Lin Weidong did indeed have a fever, but it was only a low-grade fever, and he felt weak all over.
He lay in bed, and Lin Qingyu took care of him at home.
"Auntie, let me do it. You go back and rest!"
He took the Chinese medicine from Lin Qingyu and urged her to rest.
Lin Qingyu's belly grew bigger and bigger, and she became quite clumsy when she walked.
She didn't get in the way, but simply asked a question out of concern.
"Is Weidong alright? I hope it's not serious, it looks really uncomfortable!"
Gu Xichao turned to her and explained, "Aunt, don't worry. She probably caught a chill when she walked to town yesterday. She'll be fine after taking some Chinese medicine."
Lin Qingyu frowned slightly, but didn't say much. She gave a few instructions and then left.
Lin Weidong was half asleep when he vaguely heard someone telling him to take his medicine.
He struggled to open his eyes and drank a bowl of Chinese medicine without realizing it; the temperature was just right.
Then she fell into a deep sleep and became completely unconscious.
I slept soundly until the next morning.
Li Xiuhua and Lin Qingyu were extremely anxious, so they didn't go to the small restaurant today and stayed home instead.
"Is Weidong alright? How come he's like this after just one trip home?"
Li Xiuhua stood anxiously in front of Lin Weidong's bed, her eyes red. Lin Weidong remained asleep, without making a sound.
Gu Xichao didn't mention what happened in Pear Blossom Village, nor did he mention the two of them going to Fog Village.
She simply said, "She'll probably wake up soon, Grandma, don't worry too much."
The medicine he gave Lin Weidong contained sleep aids, mainly to let Lin Weidong rest more so that he could recover faster.
Sure enough, not long after Gu Xichao finished speaking, Lin Weidong woke up in bed.
"Mother? Hiss!"
He had been lying there for so long, and his whole body felt uncomfortable. He tried to get up, but then he fell back down.
"Hey Weidong, how are you? Are you feeling unwell anywhere?"
Lin Weidong closed his eyes and calmed himself down for a while, still trying to soothe Li Xiuhua's emotions.
"Mom, I'm fine, just a little dizzy. I'll feel better after lying down for a while."
Lin Qingyu looked at him anxiously, "You've been sleeping for a day and two nights, how can I not worry about you!"
Lin Weidong felt much better and sat up in bed. Li Xiuhua quickly helped him up.
"I'm fine, much better, just a little hungry!"
He was a little pale, but he looked much more energetic.
Li Xiuhua quickly went to cook for him, making some millet porridge.
After the meal, the people were much better.
Afterwards, Lin Weidong urged the group to hurry to the small restaurant so as not to delay the business because of him.
No matter how much Li Xiuhua pleaded, he wouldn't let anyone stay, so in the end only Gu Xichao stayed to take care of him.
Lin Weidong mainly wanted to ask him something, and he was indeed much better.
Gu Xichao told him the whole story in detail, and then said, "Jiang Lili has been arrested and will probably be sentenced soon."
Lin Weidong sighed, "It's just a pity about that child. I heard he's only five or six years old?"
"I heard that the child was sent back to his maternal grandmother's house. I guess that's just his fate!"
"well!"
Lin Weidong sighed heavily, and then got up again to go with Gu Xichao to help out at the small restaurant.
At this moment, something unusual was happening in the small restaurant.
"Boss lady, bring ten meat buns first, then two sorghum buns, and a cucumber salad."
A man and a woman were sitting in the shop with a little girl, and they all had strong accents.
Lin Qingyu assumed they were parents with their little girl and offered them mung bean soup as a gift.
"No need, just serve the food!"
The two didn't say much, and the little girl sat silently in the corner.
Lin Qingyu felt something was off, so she took another look at the little girl.
Only then did I notice that the little girl was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and her hair was a bit messy.
Perhaps noticing Lin Qingyu's gaze, the little girl looked up at her.
He opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, the woman next to him slapped him across the face. "Behave yourself!"
Lin Qingyu felt something was amiss, so she said a few more words.
"We don't have sorghum buns in our shop, but how about we give you two corn buns? The price is the same."
The man waved his hand impatiently and said, "Fine, fine, hurry up and bring me the steamed buns!"
There weren't many people in the store today, and apart from the opening day, business hasn't been very good in the following days.
The three of them sat next to the restaurant entrance, in a spot against the wall, but it was still convenient for them to come and go.
Lin Qingyu, heavily pregnant, walked into the kitchen and pulled along a young man who had just finished cooking.
"Xiao Li, don't stay in the kitchen for now. There aren't many people today. Go out and keep an eye on things, especially those three people by the door."
Xiao Li was a little confused, and Lin Qingyu thought for a moment before revealing her guess.
Several chefs were in the kitchen, and Lin Qingyu said to them, "I feel there's something wrong with that couple. That little girl doesn't seem to be their biological daughter."
The group was somewhat shocked. Zhang Chao rolled up his sleeves, put his hands on his hips, and said, "Could they be human traffickers?"
Lin Qingyu quickly added, "Maybe it's just that they're not good to their daughter. Anyway, I think there's something wrong with it."
Finally, Zhang Chao personally cooked a dish and served it to the other person.
"Brother, this isn't enough for all of you. Here, take it. Give your daughter some better food; look how thin she's gotten!"
Zhang Chao smiled and struck up a conversation with him, kindly offering him a plate of stir-fried pork, but the man didn't appreciate it at all.
"It's none of your business! I can eat however I want!"
Zhang Chao smiled and said, "It's alright, consider this my treat, no need to take the money."
The man suddenly chuckled, "What! You've taken a fancy to this girl?"
The little girl looked up in fright. She was holding a cornbread bun and eating it. There was only a bowl of plain water in front of her.
When she heard the man say that, she was so frightened that she dropped her steamed bun on the ground.
There were only three tables of guests in the lobby. The people at the other two tables heard the noise and watched the commotion with curiosity.
Hearing the noise, the young men in the kitchen all came out—five young men and several young women.
Seeing that there were many of them, the man stopped talking and cursed, "Damn it, this is bad luck! I'm not eating anymore, get up right now!"
He threw down his chopsticks and reached out to grab the little girl.
The woman was still eating meat buns when she saw this and quickly took two more and put them in a cloth bag.
