Lin Qingyu felt a pang of heartache upon hearing the child's cries.
At that moment, she didn't care about anything else, and ran home with her hoe.
"What happened? What's going on?"
She saw several people gathered in front of her house; they were all her neighbors. In the center of the crowd stood Wu Lili and a child of about seven or eight years old.
When her neighbor Zhang Li saw her running over, she quickly grabbed her arm.
"Lin family girl, this child seems to be from Gu Shi's family. What brings him here?"
"The Gu family's?"
Lin Qingyu frowned slightly. The child from the Gu family must be his nephew.
"I don't know either, what happened, Auntie?"
As she squeezed into the crowd, she asked Zhang Li, who had come in with her.
Zhang Li had just given birth and was still in her postpartum confinement period, so she stayed at home.
“Oh dear! I heard that this child came looking for someone, but he couldn’t say who. Just then, Wu Zhiqing came back and said a few words to him.”
"I don't know exactly what it was about. When I came out just now, I saw that the child was crying uncontrollably."
Lin Qingyu walked to the center of the crowd and looked closely. The child with the same hairstyle as Gu Shi was indeed his nephew.
No other child in the village was as strong as him.
"Xiao Bao, why are you crying? I know your uncle. Who are you looking for? I'll help you find him."
She ignored Wu Lili beside her, only glancing at her briefly.
There was an empty stainless steel lunchbox on the ground.
Zhao Xiaobao cried and sobbed, sobbing uncontrollably, "Sister...this person...she stole my things!"
"Hey! Little brat, you can't talk nonsense like that. This is a sent-down youth from our village, a sent-down youth from the big city. How could he possibly steal your things?"
Before Lin Qingyu could speak, a slightly plump aunt next to her started chattering.
Zhang Li chimed in, "Yes, Xiao Bao, do you have some misunderstanding about Wu Zhiqing?"
Wu Lili did not defend herself; she simply stared innocently at the crowd around her.
That look seemed to say: I am innocent!
When Zhao Xiaobao heard that none of the adults believed him, he became even more heartbroken and burst into tears again.
Lin Qingyu quickly reached out and hugged him, whispering to comfort him, "Xiaobao, don't cry. I believe in you. Tell me what happened just now."
Zhao Xiaobao stopped involuntarily upon hearing Lin Qingyu's voice, but his lips were still pursed.
“My uncle asked me to come and deliver rabbit meat to a pretty lady. He just cooked it and said that she was injured and should eat more meat.”
Then everyone remembered that Lin Qingyu was injured.
The gauze on her forehead had just been removed today, so it was understandable that Gu Shi was delivering things to her.
It was midday, and the sun was shining brightly overhead. Everyone was wearing short sleeves and cloth shoes. After a while, Lin Qingyu could smell the sweat emanating from someone.
But she still patiently asked, "Then where's your rabbit meat? Did your uncle ask you to deliver something to Lin Qingyu?"
"It seems so, yes, this woman stole my rabbit meat and ate it!"
Wu Lili was being pointed at by Zhao Xiaobao, her face full of disbelief.
She had checked carefully and there was no one around. As long as she insisted that she hadn't eaten rabbit meat, no one could do anything to her.
"Kid, you must be mistaken! You're the one who stole the food, how can you lie?"
Wu Lili was so frightened that she fainted at the educated youth center last time, but when people asked her what happened, she wouldn't say. It was too embarrassing to be frightened by a dog.
But now they are not affected at all and continue to do what they were doing.
Zhao Xiaobao's eyes filled with tears again, and he sobbed, "I didn't lie! My uncle said that a child who lies isn't a good child. You were the one who ate it!"
Seeing how excited Zhao Xiaobao was, everyone couldn't help but believe what he said!
The lunchbox on the ground looked quite large; it didn't seem like something Zhao Xiaobao could finish by himself.
Of course, it's also possible that Gu Shi didn't fill the lunchbox completely.
"This matter cannot be verified, but I believe Xiaobao; children don't lie!"
Lin Qingyu stood up and looked at Wu Lili as she spoke. Although she didn't say it explicitly, everyone knew what she meant.
The plump aunt who had spoken earlier chimed in, "I think Zhao Xiaobao is definitely lying. How could Wu Zhiqing possibly steal his things!"
However, Zhang Li, who was next to her, whispered, "That's hard to say. After all, it's rabbit meat. I didn't eat any meat during my postpartum period!"
She spoke softly, and there were even cicadas chirping in the nearby trees, but everyone heard her.
Suddenly, everyone present turned their attention to Wu Lili.
Wu Lili was surprised that anyone would believe what the child said, and she began to argue her point in a panic.
"You believe everything he says? Qingyu, even if you don't like me anymore, you don't need to look down on me like this!"
Wu Lili only realized later that no one saw her push Lin Qingyu at the time.
If she just leaves like this, wouldn't she seem guilty?
So she came here today to see Lin Qingyu. Anyway, she would never admit it, and it would be best if she could move back in.
Although she only moved to the educated youth settlement yesterday, and even made such a huge fool of herself.
Lin Qingyu looked at her and simply repeated what she had just said: "I don't think Xiaobao would lie."
