"I'm going to be a dad!"
Li Jinhua was startled by his sudden action and instinctively protected her abdomen.
"Watch out for the children!"
Su Mingqiang quickly and gently placed her back on the chair, his face beaming with uncontrollable joy.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so happy!"
He squatted down and put his ear to Li Jinhua's flat stomach.
"Let me hear it."
"Fool, you're so young, how could you possibly hear anything?"
Li Jinhua forced a smile.
Su Mingqiang raised his head, his eyes glistening with tears.
"Jinhua, I will definitely make sure you and your daughter live a good life."
He took her hand.
"I'll talk to the team leader tomorrow and ask him to take on more work. Oh, and I need to buy you some nutritional supplements, a crib, and clothes..."
Watching him excitedly plan for the future, Li Jinhua felt a sharp pain in her chest.
She turned her face away, pretending to fix her hair, and secretly wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
Why are you crying?
Su Mingqiang asked with concern.
"Happy."
Li Jinhua forced a smile.
Su Mingqiang gently wiped away her tears.
"Don't cry, it's bad for the child."
He got up and went to the kitchen.
"I'll heat up a glass of milk for you; you need to replenish your nutrients."
Watching his busy figure, Li Jinhua bit her lower lip.
Once a lie begins, it must be maintained with more lies.
In the days that followed, Su Mingqiang seemed like a completely different person.
He gets up before dawn every day to prepare breakfast before going to work; after get off work, he no longer drinks alcohol, but goes straight to the market to buy the freshest ingredients.
He took care of all the housework, even washing Li Jinhua's underwear.
"You are now a high-priority protection target."
He always says that.
"Don't do anything, just rest and recover."
