Less than half an hour later, the courtyard gate was suddenly pushed open, accompanied by hurried footsteps and panting.
"Father! Mother!"
Wang Xiulan practically stumbled into the main room, her face still flushed from rushing back from the market.
She stood at the doorway, her eyes fixed on the two elderly people, her lips trembling, unable to utter a word for a moment.
The mother-in-law slowly stood up and gently placed the small fur in her hand on the chair.
She took two steps forward, tears glistening in her cloudy eyes.
"Xiulan..."
"mother!!"
Wang Xiulan finally burst into tears, throwing herself into her mother's arms and wailing like a child.
The father-in-law also stood up, walked over shakily, and embraced his wife and daughter, tears streaming down his face.
Su Jianguo quietly stepped aside, giving the family, who had been separated for so long, some space.
He saw his wife crying in Wang Xiulan's arms, her shoulders heaving, while his father-in-law patted his daughter's back repeatedly, like comforting a child.
"So many years...so many years since we last met..."
Wang Xiulan sobbed as she spoke, her voice muffled on her mother's shoulder.
"Your daughter is unfilial; I couldn't go back to see you..."
"Silly child, why are you saying all this?"
The mother-in-law wiped away her tears.
"We know you're busy, that's why we came to see you."
Su Jianguo cleared his throat and interjected at the opportune moment.
"Dad, Mom, now that you're here, you should definitely stay as long as you like. There's plenty of room; you can stay as long as you wish."
Wang Xiulan then lifted her head from her parents' arms, looking at her husband with teary eyes, her eyes full of gratitude.
The father-in-law wiped his eyes, looked around the spacious main room, and asked in confusion.
"Jianguo, I remember you used to be a worker in the factory, right? And you just said Xiulan is minding the shop, what's going on?"
Upon hearing this, Wang Xiulan suddenly burst into laughter through her tears, a proud expression appearing on her face.
She took her parents' hands and made them sit down again, while she stood in front of them like a child eager to share good news.
"Father, Mother, you don't know, Jianguo is really something now!"
Wang Xiulan's eyes sparkled, and her voice trembled slightly with excitement.
"He sold his job a few months ago and built a vegetable greenhouse in his hometown of Sujiatun to grow off-season vegetables. Now we run 'Su's Vegetable Shop' at Dongdan Market, and business is booming!"
The father-in-law and mother-in-law looked at each other, clearly stunned by the series of information.
The father-in-law asked hesitantly.
"Sell...sell your job? You're giving up your secure livelihood?"
"Dad, please let me finish."
Wang Xiulan continued eagerly.
"Jianguo has such foresight! He predicted the situation would change and made plans ahead of time. Now our four greenhouses produce several hundred kilograms of fresh vegetables every day. We're the only ones in the market with off-season vegetables, and they sell for a really high price!"
Su Jianguo stood aside, watching his wife's beaming face, feeling both touched and amused.
Wang Xiulan, who is usually frugal and simple, was now acting like a wife showing off her husband's achievements.
How expensive is it?
"My mother-in-law asked curiously."
Wang Xiulan smiled mysteriously and whispered.
"Cucumbers are only one yuan per pound!"
"One yuan per pound?"
The father-in-law was so shocked he almost jumped off his chair.
"Back home, summers only cost a dime!"
"That's nothing!"
Wang Xiulan got even more excited.
"Our shop can now sell over a thousand kilograms of vegetables a day, and with the tofu business included, we can earn nearly a thousand yuan a day on a good day!"
"One thousand yuan?"
The teacup in my father-in-law's hand fell to the ground with a "crash" and shattered into pieces.
He was completely oblivious, only staring wide-eyed and repeating incredulously.
"A thousand yuan a day?"
The mother-in-law was also stunned, her withered lips moving silently, as if calculating what this astronomical figure meant.
For their generation, a thousand yuan is almost a lifetime's savings.
Su Jianguo quickly stepped forward.
"Dad, don't get agitated, be careful of broken porcelain shards."
He said modestly as he picked up the broken pieces on the ground.
"Xiulan is exaggerating. They don't sell that many every day; on average, it's only around seven or eight hundred."
"That's still quite remarkable!"
The father-in-law finally came to his senses, his beard trembling with excitement.
"Your mother and I have farmed the land our whole lives, and we've never seen so much money!"
Wang Xiulan proudly puffed out her chest.
"Jianguo is really powerful now; even state-run restaurants are placing long-term orders with us!"
She suddenly remembered something and turned to Su Jianguo.
"By the way, did Manager Zhao come today?"
Su Jianguo nodded.
"They're here. The price has been agreed upon; it's 15% higher than the market price."
Wang Xiulan explained to her parents with a smug look on her face.
"And Quanjude, the most famous roast duck restaurant in Beijing! They use our cucumbers now!"
My parents-in-law were so shocked by this series of good news that they were speechless.
He just kept shaking his head, muttering things like "amazing" and "I never expected this."
Seeing the shocked yet delighted expressions on the two elderly people's faces, Su Jianguo could only smile helplessly.
This shock was still too much for the two elderly people.
He whispered to Wang Xiulan.
"Go prepare dinner. I'll go buy a roast duck and some good wine. Tonight, let's have a good family gathering."
Wang Xiulan nodded repeatedly, wiped away her tears, and walked towards the kitchen, turning back to say to her parents as she went.
"Dad, Mom, you two rest first, I'll cook you some of my specialty dishes!"
The mother-in-law quickly stood up.
