The sound of children's laughter came from outside the window. Li Jinhua suddenly looked up, stumbled to the window, and looked out through the gaps in the newspaper.
Several primary school students walked by with their schoolbags on their backs.
"Baby!"
Li Jinhua screamed and pushed open the window, trying to climb out.
The shards of glass cut her arm, but she was completely unaware, her eyes fixed only on the receding figure.
"Come back! Mommy's baby is back!"
Li Jinhua leaned half her body out of the window, crying and screaming hysterically.
Passersby turned their heads to look, but no one dared to approach the crazy woman.
Finally, exhausted, Li Jinhua collapsed to the ground, blood seeping from the wound on her arm. She simply hugged the rag doll tightly, murmuring to herself.
"Zhang Haiyang...Zhang Erhe...you'll all die a horrible death...Give me back my child...Give me back my child..."
Night falls.
Li Jinhua staggered out of the house, clutching her rag doll.
She hadn't eaten all day, and her stomach was burning with pain.
She planned to buy some food and a bottle of wine.
Only alcohol can numb her pain.
She suddenly understood why Su Mingqiang had been drinking at that time.
The streetlights flickered on and off, and Li Jinhua walked with uneven steps, occasionally bumping into passersby and drawing curses.
She paid no attention, her eyes fixed only on the small shop with its lights on in front of her.
"Boss... wine..."
Li Jinhua slapped the crumpled two yuan on the counter, her voice hoarse.
The shop owner, a middle-aged woman, sighed as she looked at Li Jinhua.
“Teacher Li, you can’t drink anymore… You used to be such a respectable person…”
"liquor!"
Li Jinhua suddenly flew into a rage and overturned the shelf next to the counter.
Give me the wine!
The boss was so startled that he quickly took out a small bottle of liquor and handed it to her.
"Here you go, please take it..."
Li Jinhua snatched the bottle, unscrewed the cap, and poured it into her mouth.
The cheap alcohol burned her throat, but gave her a brief moment of relief.
Li Jinhua was already half drunk when she left the convenience store.
Clutching a bottle of liquor, she wandered aimlessly through the streets, muttering to herself.
"Baby...Mommy's here...Mommy's come to find you..."
Suddenly, a blinding headlight shone on her, and Li Jinhua instinctively raised her hand to shield her eyes.
The next second, a speeding tricycle crashed into her head-on!
"Bang!"
Li Jinhua was thrown several meters by the impact and landed heavily in the middle of the road.
The doll was thrown aside, the wine bottle shattered, and shards of glass pierced her palm, yet she felt no pain.
The tricycle driver was a young man who was terrified when he saw that he had hit someone.
He hesitated for a second, looked around to make sure no one was watching, and then suddenly stepped on the gas, running right over Li Jinhua's leg!
"ah!"
Li Jinhua let out a heart-wrenching scream as her right leg twisted at an unnatural angle, instantly staining the road with blood.
The driver fled without looking back, leaving Li Jinhua struggling in agony in a pool of blood.
"Help...help me..."
Li Jinhua called out weakly, her consciousness gradually fading.
In her final moments before darkness fell, she seemed to see her child, reaching out a tiny hand to her...
When Li Jinhua woke up again, she was already lying in a hospital bed.
The pungent smell of disinfectant made her frown, and a piercing pain shot through her right leg.
"You're awake?"
A nurse stood by the bed and asked expressionlessly.
Li Jinhua wanted to speak, but found her throat was so dry it felt like it was on fire, and she could only make hoarse, breathy sounds.
The nurse handed her a glass of water.
"You're lucky you were found and brought here by a passerby. Your right leg has a comminuted fracture; you've already had surgery."
Li Jinhua struggled to sit up and looked at her right leg.
There it was covered with thick plaster and suspended in mid-air.
"Doctor...doctor..."
Li Jinhua finally managed to squeeze out a few words.
The nurse sighed.
"The attending physician will be making rounds soon. You can ask him any questions you may have."
A moment later, a middle-aged doctor wearing glasses walked into the ward, holding a medical record in his hand.
"Li Jinhua, right?"
The doctor was looking through the medical records.
"Your condition is quite serious. You have a comminuted fracture of the tibia and fibula in your right leg, accompanied by severe soft tissue damage. Although we have done our best, but..."
The doctor paused.
"You may need crutches to walk from now on."
Li Jinhua's eyes widened in disbelief at what she was hearing.
"Disabled...?"
The doctor nodded.
"It's a miracle you managed to save your leg. Also, you're already over a thousand dollars in unpaid medical bills, and the hospital wants you to contact your family as soon as possible to settle the account."
family?
Li Jinhua smiled bitterly.
What family does she have left?
Her parents had long since disowned her, Su Mingqiang was in jail, and her child had been taken away by Zhang Erhe...
"I...I have no money..."
Li Jinhua said in a low voice.
The doctor's expression immediately turned cold.
"Then please be discharged as soon as possible. Beds are scarce, and you can't stay here indefinitely."
Li Jinhua couldn't believe her ears.
"But...but I'm not ready yet..."
"Hospitals are not charities."
After saying this coldly, the doctor turned and left the ward.
The nurse glanced at Li Jinhua, a hint of pity flashing in her eyes, but ultimately said nothing and followed the doctor away.
Li Jinhua lay on the hospital bed, tears streaming silently down her face.
