As Su Jianguo watched her departing figure, a warm feeling welled up in his heart.
These innocent and carefree children deserve the best food.
On the playground, staff have begun final preparations.
Su Jianguo glanced at his watch; it was already 7:20, and he should go back.
But for some reason, he suddenly really wanted to watch the sports meet.
Perhaps the atmosphere of the campus evoked memories of his daughter's student days, or perhaps he simply wanted to relax.
"Old Li."
Su Jianguo returned to the car and said to the driver.
"You go back first, I plan to stay and watch the sports meet."
Old Li was somewhat surprised.
"Boss, aren't you supposed to be going to a meeting in the county?"
"Let's postpone it until the afternoon."
Su Jianguo waved his hand.
"Such a lively sports meet, it would be a shame to miss it."
He didn't know that this impulsive decision would completely change the fate of many people.
...
The kitchen of the canteen.
Wang Daikui's hands were shaking so badly he could barely hold the spoon.
He glanced at the wall clock.
At 7:40, there were still more than four hours until lunchtime, but for him, every minute was torture.
"Uncle Wang, I've come to get breakfast for the class!"
Li Xiaomeng skipped and hopped into the kitchen, her voice clear and melodious.
Wang Daikui was startled and almost dropped the spatula in his hand.
"Little Meng... breakfast is over there, Aunt Zhang will give it to you..."
He pointed to the food counter next to him, where dozens of breakfasts had already been laid out.
Steamed buns, eggs, and soy milk were neatly arranged.
Li Xiaomeng did not leave immediately, but tilted her head and looked at Wang Daikui.
"Uncle Wang, your face looks so pale. Are you sick?"
"N-no..."
Wang Daikui wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"The kitchen is just too hot..."
Li Xiaomeng nodded with some doubt and ran off to get breakfast.
Wang Daikui let out a long sigh of relief, turned around, and took the small glass bottle out of his pocket.
The transparent powder swayed slightly in the bottle.
"Just a little bit..."
Wang Daikui muttered to himself.
"Principal Liu said that just a tiny bit would make the children vomit and have diarrhea..."
His hands trembled even more violently, and beads of sweat rolled down his forehead.
His son's words from last night echoed in his ears.
"Dad, we can use laxatives instead, that way it won't harm the children..."
But Liu Zhiqiang's threat is equally clear.
"If you mess this up, your whole family will be out of a job in Beijing!"
Wang Daikui closed his eyes, his mind in turmoil.
On one side is her son's future and the safety of her whole family; on the other side is the health and even the lives of dozens of innocent children.
"Director Wang, is lunch ready?"
Old Li suddenly appeared behind him.
Wang Daikui was so frightened he almost jumped up, and hurriedly stuffed the glass bottle back into his pocket.
"Ready, all set! Old Li, go wash the spinach..."
Old Li glanced at him and slowly walked towards the pool.
Wang Daikui felt his heart was about to leap out of his chest; he had to act quickly, or he might lose his courage.
While Old Li was washing vegetables with his back to him, Wang Daikui took out the glass bottle again.
The spinach for lunch had already been blanched, and the bright green leaves were piled in a stainless steel bowl, emitting a fresh fragrance.
According to the plan, he should have mixed the poison into the seasonings while making the salad, so that it would be least likely to be detected.
"Just pour a tiny bit..."
Wang Daikui's hands were shaking so badly that he couldn't unscrew the bottle cap.
Large beads of sweat appeared on his forehead, and his vision blurred intermittently.
Just then, Li Xiaomeng's voice suddenly came from the doorway.
"Uncle Wang, Aunt Zhang says she needs ten more breakfasts!"
"ah!"
Wang Daikui cried out in surprise, and the glass bottle slipped from his hand, shattering on the ground.
Yellow powder splattered everywhere, mostly landing on his apron and shoes, with a small portion splashing onto the floor. A pungent odor immediately filled the air.
"Uncle Wang, what is this?"
Li Xiaomeng curiously leaned closer.
"Don't come any closer!"
Wang Daikui practically shouted it out, startling Li Xiaomeng.
"Quick, get out of here! It's dangerous!"
Li Xiaomeng took a few steps back, but did not leave.
She keenly noticed Wang Daikui's unusual behavior and the broken glass bottle on the ground. A shiny bottle cap rolled to her feet, which she quietly picked up and hid in her pocket.
Old Li turned around when he heard the noise.
"What happened? What did you spill?"
"N-nothing!"
Wang Daikui hurriedly pulled off his apron and tried to wipe the powder off the ground.
"It's...it's disinfectant! Yes, disinfectant! I accidentally spilled it..."
Old Li wrinkled his nose.
"This smell... doesn't smell like disinfectant..."
"It's brand new!"
Wang Daikui's voice was abnormally shrill.
"Go on with your work!"
Old Li shook his head, picked up the mop, and walked over.
"I'll clean it up. You go and change into an apron."
Wang Daikui felt as if he had been granted a pardon and hurriedly fled the scene.
Li Xiaomeng stood at the door, her small hands tightly gripping the bottle cap in her pocket, her big eyes filled with doubt and unease.
Old Li repeatedly mopped the floor, the pungent smell making him frown.
"What kind of disinfectant is this? It smells so strong..."
But he didn't think much of it and continued with his work, inadvertently destroying most of the evidence.
