Standing behind him were Li Jinhua's elder brother, Li Jinbao, and several other Li family relatives whom Su Mingqiang had only met once at the wedding.
"dad?"
Su Mingqiang stammered.
Li Decai nodded, and then, like a tide, he led the people behind him into the small living room.
"Mingqiang, we rushed here overnight."
Li Decai spoke earnestly to Su Mingqiang.
"We heard you're going to the neighborhood committee to separate your property today, so we came especially to cheer you on!"
Su Mingqiang opened his mouth, unable to speak for a long time.
He never imagined that after he separated from his wife's family, so many people from his wife's in-laws would come.
"What's wrong?"
Li Jinhua's voice came from the bedroom. She came out wearing a coat and showed no surprise when she saw everyone in the living room.
"Dad, why are you here so early? Wasn't the train supposed to leave at six?"
"I caught the early bus."
Li Jinbao interjected, noting the dark circles under his eyes, indicating he hadn't slept well all night.
"It's not that I'm afraid of delaying important matters."
Su Mingqiang then noticed that several of Li's relatives were carrying cloth bags and looked travel-worn.
"Jin Hua..."
Su Mingqiang turned to his wife, his voice tinged with pleading.
"It's just a family division, is such a big deal really necessary?"
Li Jinhua's eyes widened, but before she could speak, Li Decai coughed heavily.
"Mingqiang, you're young and don't understand. Dividing the family property is a big deal; how can you manage without someone to help you? We're doing this for your own good!"
"that is!"
Li Jinbao echoed.
"Thirty thousand yuan! You're going alone? Won't your dad scare you?"
Su Mingqiang felt a wave of suffocation.
