Su Jianguo patted his third son's head, his eyes filled with satisfaction.
"You have good judgment, much better than your older brother!"
Aunt Zhang watched from the sidelines, thoroughly amused.
"Old Su, your family is really something... oh dear!"
She suddenly widened her eyes and pointed behind Su Jianguo.
"This...this is a new bicycle? A Phoenix brand?"
Under the sunlight, the brand-new Phoenix bicycle gleamed, its deep green paint reflecting a dazzling light, and the bell on the handlebars sparkled.
"Just bought it."
Su Jianguo patted the car seat triumphantly.
"The latest model, 385 yuan."
"My God!"
Aunt Zhang gasped.
"How much money did this cost? Old Su, have you struck it rich?"
Wang Xiulan was also stunned. Her fingers trembled as she reached for the bicycle, then withdrew them as if afraid of getting it dirty.
"Honey, this...this is far too precious..."
"What's so expensive about it?"
Su Jianguo waved his hand with a grand gesture.
"Our family should have a decent car now. I'll take you for rides on it from now on!"
Su Yufen and Su Mingfu circled the bicycle, carefully touching the handlebars and seat, their faces filled with admiration.
Aunt Zhang clicked her tongue in amazement, her eyes filled with envy.
A warm atmosphere permeated the courtyard, a stark contrast to the chaotic scene at Su Mingqiang's house not far away.
there.
When Su Mingqiang pushed the dilapidated bicycle and led his grandparents to their courtyard, his back was already soaked with cold sweat, and his head felt like it was about to explode.
His home was originally a two-bedroom apartment, only about 40 square meters in total. Now, Li Jinhua's parents and brother-in-law are living there, and soon two more elderly people will be moving in. He doesn't know how to explain it to Li Jinhua.
Unfortunately, we must always face the truth.
The aroma of food wafted from that familiar window in the courtyard, and the faint sounds of a radio and the laughter of the Li family could be heard.
"Qiangzi, is this your home?"
Grandpa looked up and frowned slightly.
"Why is it so noisy?"
"Sir, that's how it is in the city."
Su Mingqiang chuckled dryly, his heart pounding.
Grandma, leaning on her cane, asked with a worried expression.
"Qiangzi, your wife. Does she know we're here?"
"Of course I know!"
Su Mingqiang's forehead was covered in cold sweat.
"Jinhua is so filial. She'll be so happy to hear that you two are coming!"
He himself didn't believe what he said.
Thinking of Li Jinhua's mean face and his mother-in-law's shrewish manner, Su Mingqiang's legs felt as heavy as lead.
After finally managing to get to the door, Su Mingqiang took a deep breath and opened it.
As soon as the door opened, the aroma of braised pork ribs wafted out, along with the jarring sound of opera from the radio.
In the living room, Li's father lay sprawled on the only sofa, his feet propped up on the coffee table, holding sunflower seeds in his hand, spitting the shells all over the floor.
Li's mother sat cross-legged on a single sofa, squeezing pimples off her face in front of a small mirror.
The eldest brother-in-law, Li Fugui, went even further, lying down on the dining table with his legs crossed, humming a little tune.
"Oh, you're back?"
Li Fugui glanced sideways and saw the old man behind Su Mingqiang, and frowned.
"Who are these two old fogies?"
Su Mingqiang's face turned pale instantly.
"Big brother, this is my grandpa and grandma."
"What?"
Li's mother slammed the mirror down, her triangular eyes wide with shock.
"You brought your elderly parents here?"
The kitchen door was suddenly pushed open, and Li Jinhua rushed out wearing an apron and holding a spatula.
Upon seeing the two elderly people, the smile on her face instantly froze.
"Su Mingqiang!"
Her shrill voice was so sharp it hurt your eardrums.
"What do you mean? There are already three people living in my house, and you want to squeeze two more old geezers in?"
Grandpa's face instantly darkened, and he slammed his cane heavily on the ground.
"Girl, how can you talk like that?"
"What's wrong with me saying this?"
Li Jinhua stood with her hands on her hips, oil dripping from the spatula onto the floor.
"This is my home! I can say whatever I want!"
Su Mingqiang was caught in the middle, wringing his hands anxiously.
"Jinhua, it's rare for Grandpa and Grandma to come to the city."
"fart!"
Li Jinhua almost spat on Su Mingqiang's face.
"Isn't your dad supposed to be all capable? Let him serve you! What are you doing at my house?"
Li Fugui jumped off the dining table, shirtless, and swaggered up to the old man, looking him down at him.
"Old man, don't you have anywhere to live in the countryside? Why do you insist on squeezing into the city?"
Grandma was so frightened by this scene that she hid behind Grandpa.
Grandpa was so angry that his beard trembled, and he shoved Li Fugui away.
"You ill-mannered brat! This is my grandson's house; I can't just come and go as I please!"
"Ouch!"
Li's mother slapped her thigh in a sarcastic tone.
"Starting to act all high and mighty? Do you even know whose place you're living in? It's a house my daughter bought with her own money!"
Su Mingqiang was so anxious that he kept stamping his feet.
"Mom! This apartment was allocated to me by my work unit."
"Shut up!"
Li Jinhua slammed a spatula into Su Mingqiang's head.
"If you say another word, you'll both get out!"
Suddenly, a sizzling sound came from the kitchen, and Li Jinhua screamed.
"My ribs!" She turned and rushed back to the kitchen.
The living room fell silent for a moment, with only the jarring sound of opera from the radio remaining.
Mr. Li finally sat up from the sofa and squinted at the two elderly people.
"In-laws, why don't you wait in the hallway for a bit? We're just about to eat."
