Chapter 2 Selling Boxed Meals

Driven by the promise of eight yuan a day and iced cola, my younger brother didn't rest after meals. He proactively dug out five pounds of potatoes, washed the vegetables, and carefully checked each green bean for insects.

He Wenlin chopped the potatoes and green beans, and by the time she finished the preparations, it was already 2:45.

The siblings washed their faces, lay down on their beds, and dozed off for a while.

When I woke up, it was almost four o'clock.

He Wenlin quickly started cooking rice and stir-frying vegetables.

He Wenjun packed it up.

The siblings worked together very well.

This time, fifty-six portions were packed up, and as before, some of each dish was reserved, enough for their family of four.

At 5:20, the siblings set off for their usual spot to set up their stall.

The working hours in almost all the factories here are like this: if you work overtime, you get off work at 5:30 for lunch; if you don't work overtime, you get off work at 6:00.

People who don't work overtime usually cook for themselves after get off work, but He Wenlin's target customers are those who work overtime, so she has to set up her stall by 5:30.

At 5:35, more and more people started to arrive.

Just as He Wenlin was about to call out her wares, the uncle who had bought a boxed lunch from her at noon arrived.

"Hey, Grandma (a term of endearment used by elders to address younger girls), give me five boxed lunches. What's on the menu today?"

"Today's meal is hot and sour shredded potatoes, minced meat and green beans, and fried pork cracklings with vegetables. So much food! Is it enough to finish?"

"Your cooking skills are good. Several fellow villagers also want to try it. Do you sell here at this time every day?"

"I'll come every day from now on. Thank you for your continued support of my business."

I quickly handed the uncle five portions.

As soon as the uncle left, several more customers arrived, all of whom had come at noon. They also came in groups, quickly surrounding He Wenlin's stall.

People love to join in the fun. As soon as they saw He Wenlin's group gathered around, other passersby also became very curious and stopped to watch. When they heard that she was selling Hunan-style home-cooked fast food for three yuan a serving, which included three dishes and meat, they immediately made a purchase.

In just ten minutes, all fifty-six portions were sold out!

There are still a few that I haven't been able to buy.

"Closing up shop, buying Cokes!"

He Wenjun jumped three feet high: "Yay!"

He Wenlin took He Wenjun to the convenience store and bought eight cans of iced cola, which cost sixteen yuan.

Sipping his iced cola, the little brother looked completely satisfied, feeling like the happiest brother in the world.

My older sister is definitely the best.

"Sis, I'll do the work for you again tomorrow!"

"Okay, but you can't fall behind in your studies. You have to do three pages of summer homework tomorrow."

"Sis, it's only the beginning of the holiday, there's still a long way to go before school starts."

No homework is allowed until the crucial two days before school starts!

"Would you like to have free iced cola all the time?"

He Wenjun hesitated for a moment, then said, "Alright then."

Seeing watermelons for sale by the roadside, He Wenlin bought a six-pound seedless watermelon for three yuan.

I got home at exactly six o'clock. The food on the table had already been touched, so it seemed my parents would be working overtime again today.

He Wenlin gave two more cans of Coke to He Qian and her brother, saying that they would borrow the pot again tomorrow.

He Wenlin filled a bucket with water, soaked the watermelon in it, and planned to eat it together with her parents when they got off work in the evening.

After finishing her meal, He Wenlin counted the money she had on her; she still had 283 yuan left!

Her initial investment was 120, so doesn't that mean she earned 163? That's after covering the family's food and drink expenses!

That's really great!

Seeing He Wenlin counting money, the younger brother asked, "Sis, how much money did you make?"

"I made a few dollars, I guess."

Children can't keep their mouths shut, so He Wenlin dared not tell the truth.
