Before we knew it, it was National Day.
Today is both Peng Liang's housewarming celebration and the day he and He Ling got engaged.
All of my local relatives and friends went.
As a mutual friend of both men and women, He Wenlin gave Peng Liang a large money tree and a red envelope containing 688 yuan.
When He Wenlin moved to her new house, he came and gave her a gift of 200 yuan. But at that time, he was an employee and He Wenlin was the boss, so she didn't accept his gift and returned it to his salary.
He Wenlin gave He Ling two designer lipsticks. Actually, she didn't know what to give as an engagement gift, so she simply gave lipsticks, two of them, which meant good things would come in pairs.
Yang Ma was also there. When she saw He Wenlin, she gave her a cold look and her eyes were like knives.
What should have been a joyous occasion for everyone turned into a nightmare when Yang's mother held a grudge against Peng Liang for not pleading for her, which resulted in her family paying He Wenlin 25,000 yuan in breach of contract fees. As a result, she started finding fault with everything as soon as she entered Peng Liang's house.
"This house is so small, how will you all fit in? Are you going to sleep on the floor after the baby is born?" Yang Ma looked around. "And the furniture... why didn't you buy anything better? You're such a big boss, why did you buy a wooden sofa?"
"Buying a fourth-floor apartment is bad luck at all."
"This space is so small, it's already full after just two banquet tables. How did you even choose this place in the first place? You really have no taste in shopping..."
She went on and on, not saying a single kind word, which made the Peng family and He Ling's family turn ashen-faced.
He Shan, being straightforward, said directly, "Auntie, you look down on this and that. If you're so capable, why don't you buy a nice set for everyone to see? Oh dear, is it because you can't afford it?"
"What are you saying, little girl? How did the adults raise you?" Yang's mother said, exasperated.
"My mom certainly didn't teach me to be picky when visiting other people's homes, hmph."
Yang's mother was furious.
“If you’re willing, you can have a nice meal here. If you’re not, you can leave. I don’t need your little red envelope.” Mr. Peng lost his temper. “On such a nice day, I don’t want to argue with you. If you don’t want to stay, the door is right there.”
After saying that, Mr. Peng pointed to the security door next to him.
Realizing she was being rude, Yang's mother finally shut up.
But none of the guests paid any attention to her.
Actually, it was He Wenlin who suggested that Peng Liang do a simple renovation of the house.
He initially bought the house because it was trendy; he thought he should follow He Wenlin's advice and buy it as an investment.
This house is so small, they're only staying here temporarily for two years. After he and He Ling get married, they plan to buy a bigger one together, at least a four-bedroom one. It doesn't matter if it's a little out of the way, since they have a car. But it definitely has to be bigger, otherwise they'll really have to sleep on the floor when they get married and have children.
This house was originally intended for rental purposes, so it doesn't need to be decorated too nicely.
The three houses owned by He Wenlin, as well as the houses owned by He Shan and He Ling, were also renovated by the same construction team that did the renovation for Peng Liang. The renovations were simple.
Renovating all six houses together will reduce the price.
He Wenjun is currently extremely poor. Although he has a girlfriend, it's not time to get married yet, so there's no rush to renovate the house.
~
He Wenlin is now a senior in high school. Her studies are demanding, and her teachers are stricter, so it's not as easy for her to ask for leave as before.
Therefore, the business did not expand, and stability was the priority.
With her current business, she's already keeping herself busy enough.
Reviewing reports, attending weekly meetings, and balancing studies—it's really busy.
As the number of supply and marketing supermarkets and Haoduoduo branches increased, her food factory's business also improved.
Winter passed and spring came, and before we knew it, it was June 2004.
He Wenlin also faced her college entrance examination!
Mr. He comforted her, saying, "Linlin, don't be nervous or stressed. It's okay if you don't do well on the exam. We have enough money at home to support you for the rest of your life."
"What nonsense are you talking about? Linlin can definitely do it," said Grandma He. "There's a saying, 'If she guesses all the answers right, she'll know all the answers on the test.'"
"Don't worry, I'm not nervous," He Wenlin said with a smile. "You all go back early, don't worry about me, I'll go in first."
He Wenlin wasn't nervous at all.
Last year, her mock exam scores were around 530. She used to frequently take time off work to manage her business. This semester, however, she has devoted more energy to her studies, and her scores in math, history, and geography have all improved significantly. In the last three mock exams, her total score has not fallen below 595.
One is a sure thing.
If he performs well, getting into East China University of Technology and Shanghai University of Science and Technology should not be a problem.
Her target city is Shanghai. With her score, only these two universities (985/211) have a good chance of getting her into.
Of all He Wenlin's subjects, math was her worst.
I already found math difficult in junior high, so it must have been even more difficult in high school.
She failed every time, and because of this, the teachers wouldn't let her take leave in her first and second years of high school.
In her senior year of high school, she did a lot of math practice tests. In the second semester of her senior year, she could usually score around 90 points, which was just a passing grade.
As soon as the college entrance exam was over, she checked her answers with the math whiz in her class, and her score was just barely passing.
"You've finished the exam. What do you think your score was?" He's mother asked He Wenlin.
"It should be about the same as usual." He Wenlin estimated her score to be between 590 and 605.
"The exams are over, don't think too much about it. You should be fine getting into a top-tier university," said Mr. He. "You've got your passports too, how about going abroad for a trip?"
“Let’s go to the port city instead of going abroad,” He Wenlin said. “Our whole family has already obtained travel permits. Why don’t we go to the port city for a few days and then visit our two buildings in Zhenzhou?”
