By 7 p.m., there was nothing else to do.
After the heavy rain, a wave of individual customers still came to He Wenlin's shop. He Wenlin calculated that the individual customers brought in 15 yuan.
Revenue and customer traffic have both decreased, but it's better than nothing.
He Wenlin settled their wages and then let them go home.
He's mother was invited by several female coworkers from Jiangxi Province to go shopping at the supermarket. He Shan and her younger brother also went along. They had money on them, and they felt uncomfortable if they didn't spend it.
Mr. He was also called away to play cards.
"Dad, playing cards is fine, but you have to be back to practice by 9:30," He Wenlin reminded him as his father walked away.
He's father wanted to learn how to stir-fry rice noodles, and Lin Fei wanted to practice making fried rice with eggs. He Wenlin invited Zhou Libo, He Hui, the three Li brothers, and several fellow villagers who lived with He Wenlin to come and try the food for free.
The fried rice and noodles that He's father and Lin Fei practiced making shouldn't be wasted, so He Wenlin thought of giving them to her fellow villagers.
I'll buy two more big watermelons and freeze them. We'll cut them up and eat them together tonight; it's a way of maintaining customer relationships.
He Wenlin had cooked a large pot of rice again, which was now done. She unplugged the power, closed the door, turned off the lights, and went out.
He Wenlin plans to change her living environment.
She now lives in a dormitory and gets up very early every day. Although she is very careful, it still affects the other people in the dormitory.
He Wenlin would often treat them to popsicles, spicy snacks, cookies, and the like. Since they felt obligated to accept such treatment, they were too embarrassed to complain to He Wenlin.
Grandma and my second brother are also coming, so we need to rent a house in advance.
"Sister Linlin, what are you doing here?"
"Xiaomin, is this your home?"
He Wenlin never expected to end up at the Ruan family's house.
Hearing the voices, Ruan Min's grandmother came out quickly. The old woman smiled kindly and invited He Wenlin to come in and sit down in her Shaopu dialect.
"Grandma, I won't sit down. I came here to see if there are any houses for rent nearby. Please don't be shy."
"What kind of house do you want to rent?" Ruan Lingfeng asked.
"My grandma and my second brother are coming to visit, and I'd like to rent a detached house nearby. Do you have any houses for rent?"
“My family doesn’t have a house to rent, but my classmate’s house is for rent, and it’s only a seven or eight-minute walk from the store.”
"Would it be convenient for you to take me there and have a look?"
"OK."
He Wenlin greeted Ruan Min and her granddaughter, then went with Ruan Lingfeng to his classmate's house.
It's really close, only a few minutes away.
Ruan Lingfeng pointed to the red brick house next to him and said, "This is the old house that they want to rent out."
He Wenlin looked around. The house had two floors, with the staircase outside. There was an iron gate connecting the staircase to the corridor, making it relatively safer than the houses they were currently living in. There was also a shed at the end of the corridor, which looked like a kitchen.
“Their family lives here now.” Ruan Lingfeng led He Wenlin to the landlord’s house.
"Aunt Zhang, has your old house been rented out? This is my boss, he wants to rent a house," Ruan Lingfeng said.
Zhang Xiaoqing looked He Wenlin up and down. She had heard that the Ruan siblings were working for a little girl, but she didn't expect it to be true.
Zhang Xiaoqing said, "The first floor has already been rented out, but the second floor is still available. Shall we go take a look now?"
"Then let's go take a look."
Zhang Xiaoqing took the keys and led them upstairs. He Wenlin was right; the shed at the end of the corridor was indeed the kitchen, with an old table and an exhaust fan inside.
There are four rooms inside. The two outer rooms are slightly larger, and the two inner rooms are slightly smaller. Three of the rooms have beds, and the inner room also has an old wardrobe. The large room near the kitchen also has a wooden sofa.
“It’s more convenient here than other places. Look, we even have a toilet here,” Zhang Xiaoqing said.
This toilet was obviously added later. It's next to a small room, and it's quite large. It's tiled inside, and there's no shower, but it's much better than our current living conditions.
At least we don't have to go to those dirty and messy public toilets anymore.
"How much does it cost per month?" He Wenlin asked.
“Since you were brought here by Ling Feng, the price will definitely not be higher for you. You would have to pay 40 or 50 yuan a month to rent a mud-brick house outside, but I will charge you 280 yuan a month, with a deposit of one month’s rent in advance.”
It's so spacious, with a toilet and four rooms, 280 yuan a month is indeed reasonable.
He Wenlin readily agreed, and the two signed a simple lease agreement. However, He Wenlin did not have enough cash on hand, so she paid a deposit of one hundred yuan first, and the remaining rent and deposit would be paid around one o'clock tomorrow noon.
"Thank you so much. I wouldn't have been able to rent a place so quickly without your help."
"No need to be polite, let me take you home. It's dark here, it's not safe for a girl."
"Alright, then thank you very much, Guard Ruan."
Back at the shop, He Wenlin poured out the rice, loosened it, placed it on a tray, and put it in front of a fan to cool it down before putting it in the freezer.
It's still early, not even eight o'clock.
He Wenlin was feeling sleepy. She hadn't taken a nap all day and had gotten up so early this morning, she was about to collapse.
He Wenlin set her alarm for 9:15 and then went back to her dorm to sleep for a while.
After waking up, He Wenlin went to her cousins in Jiangxi Province to call her father: "Dad, it's past nine o'clock, time to get ready to leave and get back to work."
Upon hearing this, the man from Jiangxi said, "Your dad is busy right now. Didn't you do the same thing before your dad was born?"
After saying that, he waved his hand, telling He Wenlin to leave quickly and not to bother them.
He Wenlin didn't say much.
Back at the shop, I packed the rice and put it in the refrigerator. I took the rice out of the refrigerator to make fried rice with eggs later.
It's 9:40, and Mr. He still hasn't arrived.
