Chapter 108 Another Trip to the County Town

The straw and other waste left on the land were turned over, and the black soil was turned up.

When everything returned to calm, Yan Xiaoqiang looked at the land that hadn't changed at all, rubbed his eyes, and wondered if he was dreaming.

But when Yan Xiaoqiang saw the rice on his body, the rice in his hair, and even Cuihua's face, which was covered in white rice, he knew he wasn't dreaming; it was all real.

A golden squirrel jumped down from the tree and landed on Yan Xiaonan's shoulder, holding a pine nut in its hand, ready to put it into Yan Xiaonan's mouth.

Yan Xiaonan opened her eyes, grabbed the squirrel with her two little hands, and looked into its eyes.

Nan Nan asked, "Is it true?" The little squirrel squeaked and nodded.

Feeling that her superpowers were almost exhausted, Yan Xiaonan asked Yan Xiaoqiang to carry her and walk with the little squirrel.

The family followed the squirrel for about twenty minutes, and then a ginseng appeared before their eyes.

Nan Nan pointed to the ginseng and said to Grandma Yan, "Grandma, take it back and soak it in water to drink."

Cuihua and Grandma Yan ran up without hesitation, but they didn't have any tools in their hands.

Yan Xiaoqiang handed Nannan to Cuihua; "Mom, I'm going back to get the shovel. You wait for me here."

Grandma Yan pointed to the ginseng and said it wasn't necessary. Everyone looked and saw the little squirrel's two front paws digging rapidly in the soil.

Yan Xiaoqiang felt that the world was a bit crazy today. Looking at the squirrel's skillful movements, it was clear that this was not the first time it had done this job.

“Grandma, this ginseng is only a few decades old. Don’t hide it. Take it home and steep it in water to drink.” Yan Xiaonan said again, pointing at the ginseng.

"Sigh, I'll listen to my sweet baby. I've never tasted ginseng before."

Yan Xiaoqiang saw that the soil under the ginseng had been almost completely dug up by the squirrel, so he went up, grabbed the head of the ginseng, and pulled it out with a force.

The ginseng was indeed small, and the ginseng roots below were sparse. I casually broke off a ginseng root, rinsed it with the water I brought, and stuffed it into Grandma Yan's mouth.

Grandma Yan had a small piece of ginseng root in her mouth. The rich ginseng flavor went down with her saliva, and she immediately felt ten years younger and had more energy to walk.

Seeing how energetic Grandma Yan looked, Cuihua asked Nannan, "Baby, is your grandma really ten years younger?"

Yan Xiaonan rolled her eyes. How could such an ordinary ginseng have such powerful functions? It's just her self-suggestion.

Seeing her daughter roll her eyes, Cuihua knew she was being laughed at by her little girl, so she patted Nannan's bottom and said, "You're so naughty."

Grandma Yan, carrying ginseng in her arms, led the way home, with Cuihua carrying Nannan in the middle and Yan Xiaoqiang bringing up the rear.

On the way down the mountain, they actually ran into some villagers. They were secretly pleased to see that Grandma Yan had nothing in her hands.

Hmph, I wonder what so many people are doing up the mountain. They don't even pick up a single piece of firewood. Are they taking their kids to play?

They must have taken the kids out to play. Look at the Yan family's little girl, she's so beautiful.

It's beautiful. I wish it were my daughter; I would take her up the mountain to play too.

With that long face of yours, you think you can have a daughter like Yan Xiaonan? It's dawn, and you're still not awake.

Your face is pretty, and it looks a lot like the old ox at your third uncle's house. You two must have the same father.

If you keep spouting nonsense, I'll tear your stinking mouth apart.

You dare? You were the one who said it first.

At the Yan family home, Xuemei had prepared dinner, and Beinan and Xinan had also returned. Everyone was waiting for the grandmothers to come back.

Bei Nan looked at the door and said, "If I had known that Grandma was taking Nan Nan to the mountain, I wouldn't have gone fishing by the river. I would have gone with them."

Southwest nodded in agreement, thinking that he should have gone with Nannan if he had known she wanted to go to the mountains.

Southeast chuckled inwardly. "They're not just going up the mountain for fun. How could they possibly let you know what they're doing? You two idiots."

Southwest, with her sharp eyes, saw her mother carrying Nan Nan back and rushed out immediately: "Grandma, Mom and Dad, Nan Nan, you're back! Quickly wash your hands and face, I've already prepared the water."

Yan Xiaoqiang patted Southwest on the head. The child was sensible and began washing his face and hands in the yard with a smile.

Xuemei and the others from the southeast and north all came out, some pouring water, some getting towels. Grandma Yan felt very satisfied looking at the harmonious family.

After dinner, Grandma Yan told Southeast that she planned to have them get married on the 28th of August. She said they would set up a few tables in the village and give out some wedding candy.

As for wedding photos and marriage certificates, we'll get those after I graduate from Southwest University. I can't get them now because I'm not old enough.

Dongnan nodded, saying that if he got married before going to university, Xuemei would be at ease, since there were girls at the university too.

Yan Xiaoqiang plans to go to the county tomorrow, just like last time, and return on the same day. He wants to have Dongnan and Xuemei discuss what they want for the wedding.

Bei Nan spoke up: "Grandma, do we need 'three turns and one sound' for a wedding?"

Grandma Yan nodded: "Qiangzi, go and ask if they have any watches. Get one for Dongnan and Xuemei, and a sewing machine too. We already have a bicycle and a radio at home."

Cuihua also spoke up: "We need those wedding blankets, thermos flasks, and things like that. You should ask about them too."

Grandma Yan went into her room and took out a box filled with various coupons and vouchers, most of which had been sent by Daqiang.

He handed the box to Dongnan: "Dongnan, go to the village tomorrow and get a letter of introduction. Go to the county with Xuemei and see what you want to buy."

After saying that, he took out a roll of money from his handkerchief bag, counted out ten ten-yuan bills, totaling one hundred yuan, and handed them to Dongnan. He then took out twenty yuan and gave it to Yan Xiaoqiang.

North, South, and Southwest looked enviously at Southeast; they also longed to go, as they had never ridden the town's bus before.

Southeast couldn't wait until tomorrow, so he went to the village to get a letter of introduction and told the village chief that he was getting married in August and needed to go to the county to buy things. He said two days should be enough.

The village chief told Southeast to go back first, while he went to the village committee to get a letter of introduction. He wrote three days' notice on the date, because getting married is a big deal and there needs to be enough time.

The next morning, the three of them ate breakfast and went out to catch the 10 a.m. bus. They paid 60 cents for the ticket and occupied three seats.

Yan Xiaoqiang told them that after getting off the bus, they should go directly to a small hotel near the station, book two rooms with the letter of introduction, and pay 80 cents per room, and then go out to buy things.

After finding the person, I went straight back. Staying another night would have wasted 80 cents, and the food wasn't cheap either.

Southeast nodded. He knew who his father was looking for; it should be those two people who drove over last time.

As soon as the car stopped, Yan Xiaoqiang said goodbye to Dongnan and Xuemei and hurriedly left, walking quickly towards the market.

Zhao Weimin and Zhao Weiguo have also been having a hard time lately, mainly because they haven't been able to get enough food, and everyone is short of food.
