There was only half left. I gave Southwest a bite, and was about to break off a piece for Central South when Central South ate the whole bun in one bite.
Yan Xiaonan looked at her hand in surprise, then pried open the wolf's mouth to look inside. She said angrily, "If you eat all of this, what will my brother and sister eat?" Zhongnan realized that she had made a mistake again. Worried that the wolf's head would be hit again, she sat down, hugged her head, and looked at Yan Xiaonan pitifully.
Yan Xiaoqiang, Grandma Yan, and Cuihua watched as if they were watching a play, trying their best to suppress their laughter. Xinan also began to realize what was happening and was glad that he had run over, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to get a meat bun. But he was worried that Zhongnan would be beaten up, so he quickly said, "Grandma, Zhongnan was very good today. He caught two buckets of fish. Big Brother went to buy tofu. We'll have fish soup tonight."
Upon hearing this, Yan Xiaonan nodded like a little adult: "I forgive you this time, but if you eat alone again next time, I won't want you anymore."
Grandma Yan couldn't hold back any longer and burst into laughter. Cuihua picked up Yan Xiaonan and gave her a big kiss on the cheek: "You're such a troublemaker, making Zhongnan bark like a dog. Poor Zhongnan."
Everyone hurried home laughing and joking. Xuemei was overjoyed to see the chicks in the basket on her back. The hen at home was laying three eggs a day, and if they raised another brood of chicks, they would have plenty of eggs in four months. Then they could make something like stir-fried eggs with chives every day.
The chicks were released and chirped incessantly. Bei Nan and Xin Nan happily watched the chicks. Yan Xiao Nan silently counted the number of chicks in her mind, but dared not count aloud.
One, two, eleven, there are twelve chicks! The baby chicks said to Zhongnan, "Zhongnan, keep an eye on them! And do you want to give them names?" Beinan immediately tensed up, worried that some younger siblings might be coming out.
Yan Xiaonan could tell what they were thinking just by looking at their nervous expressions. She was secretly delighted. "Fine, fine, I won't tease them anymore. Let's just call them Hen Number One and Hen Number Two."
Grandma Yan smiled, her face crinkling with wrinkles, and asked Yan Xiaonan, "All chicks look the same. How can you tell which one is number one and which one is number two?"
Yan Xiaonan smiled but did not answer. Of course she knew that communicating with the chicks with her mind would be enough. It was such a simple thing.
Cuihua chopped the vegetables into small pieces, and watching the chicks happily pecking at them filled her with immense satisfaction. Yan Xiaoqiang also carefully inspected the chicken coop, making sure the chicks couldn't escape before washing his hands and face. The tasks in the southwest and southeast were even more challenging; they needed to find more insects.
The dinner was plentiful. Xuemei actually made braised fish, steamed fish, and tofu fish soup. She also cooked a big pot of rice, along with stir-fried cabbage and tofu, and stir-fried eggs with chives. The boys ate with beaming smiles. Zhongnan was also eating steamed fish nearby, and Xuemei carefully removed all the fish bones.
At the dinner table, Cuihua brought up the incident of Zhongnan snatching meat buns. Beinan regretted it so much that he wanted to slap himself. If he had run away too, he would definitely have gotten a bite. He gave Zhongnan a resentful look, thinking, "You didn't even leave a bite for your brother."
Zhongnan was enjoying his meal when he felt a gaze directed at him. It turned out to be Beinan. "You little brat, I'm not letting you eat. I'll let you act like a big shot at home."
Yan Xiaoqiang noticed the interaction between Bei Nan and Zhong Nan, and felt even more disgusted with Bei Nan. How could such a grown man be arguing with a little wolf cub? He was really going back to his old ways.
Grandma Yan took out the cloth, intending to make two coats for her two boys, when a sudden crying sound rang out, startling Grandma Yan so much that she almost threw the cloth away. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was from the Wang family.
Grandma Yan was a little anxious. She told Xuemei to keep an eye on Nannan and rushed over with Cuihua. As soon as she arrived at the door, she saw Erniu's mother crying her heart out, shouting, "Daniu, what's wrong with you? Wake up!"
The crying attracted the villagers, and Village Chief Ma was also called over. When they saw Da Niu sleeping in the room with her clothes still wet, they assumed she had fallen into the river and drowned. They remembered the last time Yang's son pushed Da Niu into the river, but no one cared at all, and even maliciously thought that such a person deserved to die.
But now that she's lying on the door panel, unconscious, no one thinks that way anymore. She's just a little girl of about ten years old; how could she not make mistakes? But who exactly pushed her into the river?
Village Chief Ma also asked Da Niu's mother, "Do you know who pushed Da Niu into the river?"
Da Niu's mother stopped crying immediately, unsure how to answer. Wang Er Niu spoke up: "No one pushed her; she has a high fever."
Everyone was shocked. Why didn't they take her to the village doctor if she had a high fever? Da Niu's mother could no longer contain herself and started slapping her face. "It's all my fault. I didn't let her go out, and her father even soaked her in the wet clothes."
Everyone was even more puzzled. Why didn't they let Da Niu go out? Why did they splash their own daughter all wet for no reason? The villagers must have been too bored. They started to pry and ask questions. Village Chief Ma felt that something was amiss, but he couldn't not ask at this critical moment, so he had no choice but to bite the bullet and keep asking.
San Niu was already quite articulate: "My eldest sister didn't come out for dinner, and my mother was a little worried. She asked me to go and call her out for dinner. When I opened the door, I couldn't wake her up, and that's when I found out she was sick."
Village Chief Ma walked in, carefully examined the face that was flushed red from the fever, and waved his hand dismissively: "Two people, lift the village doctor up and take a look."
The villagers of Mushroom Village are still very simple and honest. Two strong men came out, ready to carry Wang Daniu to the village doctor for treatment, but Wang Gou Dan stopped them: "No need to see a doctor, we have no money at home."
The village chief shoved Wang Gou Dan aside: "You old fool, is money more important than your daughter's life? You don't have money, huh? The village will cover it for you first, and it will be deducted from your work points at the end of the year."
Seeing the disapproving faces of the villagers, Wang Gou Dan knew he was going to be in debt today. Wang Gou Dan was Wang Daniu's father. He had made his daughter sick from the cold by using a bucket of water, but he was actually angry with Grandma Yan. The two families were such good friends, why couldn't she have given them more food to help them out?
A thorn had been planted in Wang Gou Dan's heart, and thorns like that can sprout and take root. He turned and left, but the village chief quickly waved his hand, saying that saving a life was the priority.
Watching Wang Daniu being carried away, Daniu's mother wanted to follow, but Wang Gou Dan called her back: "You ungrateful wretch who eats alone, so what if she's dead? What's there to see? Get down from the ground, or you'll get your work points deducted."
Da Niu's mother glanced at Wang Gou Dan in horror, then quickly grabbed her farm tools and ran outside. "Oh my god, what's wrong with Wang Gou Dan today? Why does he look so fierce?"
Wang Gou Dan went into Grandma Wang's house, muttered to himself for a while, and then contentedly took his farm tools and went to the fields.
