Chapter 459 Installing a Telephone

Grandma Yan felt a lump in her throat. If anyone was more pitiful, it was Yan Ge and Yan Zheng. But thankfully, the two children were very promising and did not bring shame to the Yan family.

"What kind of job does your dad have? How much does he earn a month? Is his retirement money enough for me?" Grandma Yan asked.

Yan Ge was a little nervous, after all, the lie he made up still had flaws: "Grandma, my dad helps someone mind a shop, he earns twelve yuan a month, and he spent eight mao on rent. He said that five yuan a month is enough for him, and I sometimes give him some money for retirement."

"Oh, how are you doing in that flower city? Are you tired? Has anyone bullied you? You must be careful to stay safe all alone out there," Grandma Yan asked with concern.

"Grandma, I'm fine. Come on, try on the clothes I bought for you." Yan Ge felt warm inside and quickly changed the subject, otherwise she would burst into tears.

“My drawer is full of money that Yan Zheng sent. Please send it back to him for me tomorrow. He needs to be well-fed and clothed when he’s away from home. Also, send him that padded jacket. Your uncle praised him when he came last time.”

Grandma Yan tried on the clothes that Yan Ge had bought for her, and her heart was filled with sweetness. How could she not be happy that her grandson cared about her?

As if on cue, Yan Daqiang's voice rang out: "Right here, right here, yes, yes, bring the things in."

Grandma Yan heard the noise and quickly opened the door. Sure enough, it was her eldest son.

"Mom, I've come to see you. How have you been lately? Oh my, my mom looks even younger! I should call you big sister!" Yan Daqiang laughed heartily.

Grandma Yan raised the eye bag stick in her hand and lightly tapped Yan Daqiang's arm: "You're such a chatterbox."

Xuemei and Yan Ge stood up together and called out to help.

"Hey, you two are here too. Where's Qiangzi? Where's Nannan? Uh, I remember now, they should still be in the shop, right?" Yan Daqiang muttered to himself.

Liu Jin was overjoyed to see Yan Daqiang and rushed over, exclaiming, "Grandpa, why did you take so long to come? I missed you so much!" Yan Daqiang picked up Liu Jin and laughed heartily.

"Your aunt says you're a drama queen, and you really are! Do you miss me or the gift in my pocket?"

"You brought a gift, Grandpa? What did you bring?" Liu Jin's eyes lit up.

Yan Daqiang pulled out a handful of empty bullet casings from his pocket. Liu Jin was overjoyed and quickly took the empty casings, saying, "Thank you, Grandpa! Thank you, Grandpa! I've been wanting these for so long!"

Yan Daqiang patted Liu Jin's head: "Give Wu Jin half a portion, but don't give the two smaller ones, it'll be too much trouble if they eat them."

"Hello, Grandpa." Wu Jinban wasn't very familiar with Yan Daqiang, but he still stood up politely.

"Come on, go sit over there. We need to work here." Daqiang shooed the little ones to another sofa.

"Eldest son, why haven't you come for so long? Where's your wife? I haven't seen her either!" Grandma Yan felt that she hadn't seen her eldest son and daughter-in-law for a long time.

"Mother, Xue Ying and I were sent to school by the organization to study. We just came back last night after we finished. This is the telephone installer. We're here today to install a telephone."

"A telephone is being installed! That's wonderful! It will be so much easier for me to call you now. Nan Nan said she applied a long time ago, but I thought we wouldn't be able to get one this year." Grandma Yan was overjoyed.

Yan Daqiang smiled and whispered in his mother's ear, "Nannan did a good job, so it was specially approved."

"Oh, I see. My darling is so amazing." Grandma Yan laughed so hard she almost drooled.

"Is the telephone installed in this room?" the staff member asked, pulling out a long power cord.

"Put it here. Nan Nan turned this into the main room. Look, it's on this table," Grandma Yan said, pointing to the small table next to the sofa.

"Five and a half catties, we got a telephone installed at home! Now I can call you!" Six catties exclaimed excitedly.

Five-and-a-half pounds' eyes lit up: "Six-pound brother, can I call you?"

"Of course you can, but only the village committee in Mushroom Village has a phone. I don't know if Grandpa Village Chief will let you call." Liu Jin was a little unsure.

Five-and-a-half-pound man's face immediately fell. Suddenly, he looked up and said, "Six-pound brother, if I can't make a phone call, I'll write you a letter, write to Auntie. What do you say?"

"Okay, it's settled then." Liu Jin extended his little finger to make a pinky promise.

Yan Daqiang looked on with great envy. Where was his grandson? How wonderful it would be if his grandson were here playing with them.

"The phone is installed. Would you like to try it out?" After a while, the staff member said.

"Mom, this is the first phone call for our Yan family. Please make the call first," Yan Daqiang said to Grandma Yan as he picked up the receiver.

"Who can I call?" Grandma Yan suddenly felt a little sad. She didn't know where her family members were. Besides Nan Nan, who else could she call?

"Grandma, call Auntie," Liu Jin said.

"Your aunt's clothing store doesn't have a phone, but the furniture factory does, but your aunt works at the clothing store," Grandma Yan said worriedly.

"Mom, call my father-in-law. I'll give you his phone number. You can contact him if anything happens," Yan Daqiang said decisively.

Grandma Yan nodded, took the microphone, put it to her ear, and said, "Hello, in-law?"

He heard a beeping sound in his ear and asked his son curiously, "Daqiang, why isn't your father-in-law saying anything? What's the meaning of sending coded messages? I can't understand them."

Yan Daqiang nearly choked to death. He grabbed his mother's right hand and said, "Mom, press this button. When you hear a long tone, dial the number."

"Daqiang, I heard you! Which number should I dial?" Grandma Yan asked excitedly.

Yan Daqiang pulled Grandma Yan's index finger and dialed numbers down the dial. Each time a number was dialed, the dial would click back to its original position until five numbers were dialed. Then the phone rang, followed by Xue Honggen's voice.

"Hello, hello, who is this? Speak up."

Grandma Yan looked into the microphone but didn't dare to speak. Yan Daqiang quickly whispered, "Mom, say something, say something quickly."

"Hello, in-laws, I'm Daqiang's mother. Who are you?"

Yan Daqiang "... ..."

Staff, this~

Xuemei was the most direct, squatting down and burying her head in her arms, but her shrugging shoulders betrayed her.

"Hello, in-laws. I am Xue Honggen, Xue Ying's father, your in-law." Xue Honggen quickly introduced himself.

"Oh, oh, how are you, in-laws? We've installed a telephone at home. Just call us if you need anything."

Grandma Yan was overjoyed. Such a small thing could actually make sounds coming out of it, as if someone was talking to her right in front of her. It was terrifying!
