The two pushed the bike out. Yan Daqiang put one foot on the bicycle, and as the bike sped forward, he put the other foot on and started pedaling. Then, with a quick turn, the bike came to a steady stop next to Yan Xiaoqiang, which made Yan Xiaoqiang and the others who had followed him feel very excited.
Yan Daqiang spoke up: "Get on the bike first, I'll teach you when I get back." Then he started riding his bicycle.
Yan Xiaoqiang hurriedly ran a few steps and jumped several times but failed to get on the back seat, almost pulling Yan Daqiang off as well. He could only sit down first. Once he was settled, Yan Daqiang started pedaling, cursing how someone as stupid as Yan Xiaoqiang could have such a smart daughter as Yan Xiaonan.
Hearing his older brother say that his daughter was smart, Yan Xiaoqiang was overjoyed. His daughter was the smartest in the world. Look at the radio just now, those boys just stared at it like idiots, but as soon as his daughter picked it up, hey, it started playing.
Yan Daqiang asked Yan Xiaoqiang without changing his expression, "Can your daughter ride a bicycle?"
Yan Xiaoqiang rolled his eyes at Yan Daqiang: "What are you talking about? The little girl isn't even as tall as the bicycle wheel, how is she supposed to ride it?"
Yan Daqiang was ashamed; he had forgotten about that. He realized he had asked for nothing.
Finally arriving at the town's post office, Yan Daqiang showed his military officer's ID, and the staff quickly led him to a room with a telephone. Yan Daqiang made a call to the agricultural department in Beijing, asking if they still had any of these greenhouse plastic sheets available. The answer was that they did, but it required industrial coupons and money, and the price wasn't cheap, costing one yuan per mu.
The agricultural department and the military are also good brother units. That staff member was also familiar with Yan Daqiang. He gave Yan Daqiang some advice: "Why don't you piece together those plastic sheets that your army discarded a few years ago? They might work. Farmers are skillful, and most of the rural women know how to sew. Just have them build a denser foundation."
Yan Daqiang laughed heartily, saying he would reward his strategist when he returned. For now, he would trouble him to send these things to his hometown. He would send the address to him by telegram. The other party readily agreed, finally getting a chance to flatter him. Of course he would be happy.
With the major issue resolved, the next step was to build the foundation for the greenhouse. All that was needed was to draw up a few blueprints. Yan Xiaoqiang was genuinely impressed by how quickly his older brother had accomplished the task. The two then bought some firecrackers and candles in town before returning home. However, Yan Daqiang strongly suspected that his younger brother was deliberately trying to impress him in town.
Yan Xiaoqiang just wanted to show off. When he saw those people riding bicycles, they acted as if they were riding a Qilin (a mythical creature), so arrogant. Today it's my turn to be arrogant, right? And let me tell you, it feels really good. Look at those envious looks, haha, so satisfying.
On the way back, Yan Xiaoqiang rode his bike with Yan Daqiang blocking the way from behind. Watching him ride forward wobbly, Daqiang kept yelling at him to make sure he blocked the way properly, and Daqiang agreed repeatedly.
Yan Xiaoqiang rode faster and faster, and better and better. His laughter filled the country lanes, making Yan Daqiang feel happy. He felt that he had taken the blame for this.
Yan Xiaoqiang felt he could ride alone, so he asked his older brother to let go. He asked several times but no one responded. Yan Xiaoqiang couldn't help but look back. He was shocked to see his older brother gone. Panicked, he fell to the ground with the bike. Luckily, it had snowed a few days ago and the snow hadn't melted yet, so he and the bike were unharmed.
From afar, Yan Daqiang saw his younger brother fall down. He panicked and rushed over. He was furious when he saw Yan Xiaoqiang, who was bent over checking if the car was damaged. He didn't care about him at all. "What an idiot! Does the car matter more than a person?" he thought.
After inspecting it, Yan Xiaoqiang found that the paint on the bike wasn't chipped at all. He thought to himself that expensive things are indeed of good quality. He got back on the bike and started riding. This time, he could really ride! Yan Xiaoqiang was extremely excited. He could finally ride a bicycle!
The village chief knew that Yan Daqiang was going to town to make a phone call in the morning, which would take at least two hours round trip. He kept watching the sun and calculating the time. It was almost noon, so it wouldn't be appropriate to go to Yan's house. They might think he was going to freeload a meal. After lunchtime, he still felt it wasn't appropriate. Their little girl needed to sleep, and he couldn't disturb her.
Finally, around 3 p.m., I ran to the Yan family's house. As soon as I entered the gate, I heard Mili Mara singing opera inside. I thought it was strange. Who in the Yan family could sing opera? And there was drumming too. Could it be that their eldest son, Daqiang, had returned and hired an opera troupe? But that didn't make sense. Where was the stage set up?
He knocked on the door and saw a brand-new bicycle parked in the yard, gleaming in the sunlight. The village chief couldn't help but circle around the bicycle. "What a nice bike! It's so sturdy. It can easily carry two or three hundred pounds, right?" Yan Xiaoqiang shook his head. "No way. It's a brand-new bike. How can I carry anything on it? I'd be heartbroken."
Once inside the main room, they realized the sound was coming from a square box. The village chief circled the box for a long time before asking Grandma Yan, "Sister-in-law, could this be the radio that city people talk about?"
Grandma Yan repeatedly asked the village chief to sit down, and asked Xuemei to pour him a glass of water. Pointing to the radio, she said, "This was brought back to me by my eldest son from Beijing. He wanted me to listen to that thing again."
Looking at Yan Xiaonan, he asked, "Nannan, what did your uncle say again?"
Yan Xiaonan, such a clever child, answered in a clear voice, "Grandma, Uncle said you should listen to the news every morning and evening to learn about national affairs."
"What? Such a small box can be used to learn about national affairs? How can it?" The village chief asked Yan Xiaonan in surprise.
Yan Xiaonan pointed to the tuning button on the radio and said, "Just tune it to the news channel."
"What is a level road? Is it a road that is flat?" the village chief asked again.
"What channel is the flat road?" Yan Xiaonan couldn't answer either, just blinked her big eyes, and her confused look made Grandma Yan so happy that she picked up Yan Xiaonan and kissed her.
The village chief nodded and said, "Understood. To understand national affairs, one must first walk on a level path."
Yan Daqiang, who came out of the room, almost choked on his own saliva. "You could walk the whole earth flat and still not understand national affairs? What kind of thinking is that? It's so ignorant."
When the village chief saw Yan Daqiang come out, he quickly ran over and asked, "Daqiang, how did it go? Did it work out?"
Before Yan Daqiang could speak, Yan Xiaoqiang proudly patted his chest and said, "My older brother is a real go-getter, no need to ask."
The village chief's eyes lit up with laughter, and he quickly grabbed Yan Daqiang: "Daqiang, what should we do next? What should we do?"
