Chapter Fifteen: The Honest Southwest

Seeing Yan Xiaonan shake his head, the old ox stood up somewhat disappointed. Yan Xiaonan comforted him, "Eat grass."

The old ox mooed and wagged its tail.

Grandma Yan quickly picked up Yan Xiaonan and climbed onto the oxcart. Once the grandmother and grandson were seated, the old ox started walking on its own without anyone having to drive it, which angered Yan Xiaoqiang, who was following behind.

You damn ox, I wiped your back and gave you water and you didn't even appreciate it, but when Nan Nan changed the color of the grass you gave her, you became so servile. No wonder you were reincarnated as an ox, to work yourself to death.

The boys were all greatly astonished. Could it be that this old ox was flattering his younger sister because she was pretty? Oh no, I mean flattering her.

Bei Nan glanced at Yan Xiaonan and admired her in his heart. No one in this area could compare to her. She had snow-white skin, big eyes, red lips, and two dimples when she smiled.

Southwest also took Yan Xiaonan's hand in his own. "My little sister is so beautiful. I must protect her even more in the future."

Xuemei said, "Grandma, my sister is really pretty. Even the old ox likes her."

Southeast pulled Xuemei aside and said, "Can't you speak properly? I told you to read the book, but you wouldn't. What do you mean by 'even an old ox likes it'? Honestly."

The family laughed heartily, not knowing whether time had flown by or the old ox had walked exceptionally fast today, they arrived in town in no time.

Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year, and there are quite a few people in the town. Yan Xiaoqiang paid three cents to leave the oxcart at the cattle management office, and then, carrying a basket on his back, took his family to the market.

The market was bustling with activity. Vendors selling corn, vegetables, and baskets were all haggling with buyers, and Yan Xiaonan couldn't keep up with the crowd.

They all wore thick black and dark blue cotton-padded coats, mostly patched up, and their large cotton hats almost completely covered their faces, revealing their eyes with eye boogers.

Everyone tucked their hands into their sleeves, hunched their shoulders, and asked about prices. Most of them just asked without buying anything, their pockets were simply too empty.

Yan Xiaoqiang just wanted to buy his little girl some red hair ties and colorful fruit candies; kids like that look so cute with all those bright colors.

There happened to be a general store that sold red ribbons and colorful fruit candies. The red ribbons were three cents each, the ribbons were ten cents a pair, and the fruit candies were two for one cent.

Yan Xiaoqiang looked at Grandma Yan and said, "Mom, buy Nannan some candy, hair ties, and ribbons."

Grandma Yan handed the little girl to Cuihua, took out a handkerchief from her inner pocket, opened it, and handed ten yuan to Yan Xiaoqiang.

Yan Xiaoqiang was startled: "Mom, it's only a few cents, don't give me so much."

Looking at her silly son, she said, "Your daughter wants to eat, but the boys are just watching. Buy more. Also, when you go to your father-in-law's house tomorrow, don't buy anything."

Yan Xiaoqiang awkwardly said to Cuihua, "Wife, Mother is right. Buy whatever you think is best."

Cuihua felt so happy. Her mother was so good, and her husband was good too. Three sons, a daughter, and a wife. Each of them got two candies and two red ribbons. Xuemei also wanted one.

My wife's family has two brothers and five children, three boys and two girls, so I'll buy ten more pieces of candy and two hair ties.

Seeing Cuihua's stingy appearance, Grandma Yan smiled and said to the people in the general store, "Take ten hair ties, two for Xuemei and two for Nannan each, and six for your little girl from your mother's family."

"Buy four pairs of ribbons, two pairs each for Xue Mei and Nan Nan. Also, take two jin of fruit candy, one jin for yourselves, and one jin to take back for your parents."

The shop owner said to Cuihua, "You're so lucky to have met such a wonderful mother-in-law. You must have accumulated a lot of good karma in your past life."

Grandma Yan wanted to hear this. She thought that it was because her daughter-in-law and her son had accumulated good fortune in their past lives that they had such a lucky star as Nan Nan. Thinking of this, she picked up Nan Nan.

Cuihua was a little worried: "Mother, let me carry her. The little girl is getting a bit heavy, you might hurt your back."

Nan Nan~ I'm so young, how much weight do you mean? Mom, can't you talk properly?

When the proprietress saw Yan Xiaonan, she exclaimed in surprise, "This little girl is so pretty, she looks like a lucky baby from a New Year's painting."

Grandma Yan nodded repeatedly, "My little Fu Bao is a lucky baby."

Yan Xiaonan didn't want to talk anymore. Fuwa, am I that fat?

Southwest was the most observant of the brothers. Seeing his sister rolling her eyes, he understood her thinking. The girl probably didn't like people saying she was fat, but she really was fat.

The two lumps of flesh on his face could be used to make meat buns. Thinking of meat buns, Southwest started looking around. North and South saw this and quickly asked, "What are you looking at?"

Southwest said, "I don't know where I can get meat buns, I want to eat some."

Upon hearing this, Bei Nan swallowed hard and said to Yan Xiao Nan with a grin, "Nan Nan, do you want to eat meat buns?"

Yan Xiaonan immediately became alert. "Damn it, you just want to eat it yourself, using me as a stepping stone. You won't eat it, I'll make you drool." Just as she was about to shake her head, she saw Southwest also looking at her eagerly.

Sigh, Southwest is a good older brother, so I'll nod for Southwest's sake. I nodded heavily.

Bei Nan smiled even more like the Big Bad Wolf: "Grandma, my little sister wants to eat meat buns, shall we go buy some?"

Grandma Yan glanced at Bei Nan sideways: "You wanted to eat it, didn't you? You tricked Nan Nan into nodding."

Bei Nan was stunned, while Yan Xiaonan laughed, "Grandma was so wise, oh oh oh."

Seeing Bei Nan's discomfiture, Yan Xiaonan felt an indescribable sense of satisfaction. "You're always scheming against people. You're just a little kid, yet you're so good at plotting."

Grandma Yan looked at Southwest and asked Yan Xiaonan, "Baby, do you want to eat a meat bun?"

Yan Xiaonan realized that Bei Nan was just like her mother—both were cunning and shrewd. She glanced at Xin Nan and nodded, saying, "Eat, meat."

Southwest was finally relieved, while Southeast was worried for Southwest. Even Xiao Nannan could see that Southwest was completely unaware of it.

However, Southwest is really good to Nannan. As long as it is something Nannan likes, even if it is Southwest's favorite, he will give it to Nannan without hesitation.

Nan Nan is very dependent on the Southwest, but somewhat distant from the North. How can such a young child be so shrewd?

A group of people walked to the steamed bun shop. A steamed bun cost one cent and one ounce of grain coupons. Yan Xiaonan had never properly looked at the grain coupons of this era before, and he stared at them with wide eyes.

She bought ten large steamed buns, which cost a pound of grain coupons and a dollar. Cuihua felt a pang of heartache. Grandma Yan nodded, saying she was a good person, the head of the household, and that she could rest assured leaving the family to her in the future.

The group sat in the steamed bun shop, each eating a meat bun. Bei Nan and Xin Nan ate the fastest, finishing their buns in just a few bites, making Yan Xiao Nan feel like Zhu Bajie eating ginseng fruit.

A woman walked over from a distance. Seeing the Yan family group, each holding a meat bun, she rolled her eyes and deliberately made a big fuss, exclaiming:
