Chapter Fifty-Two: Good Things and Bad Things

Mushroom Village is only so big, and the infighting within the Wang family couldn't be kept secret from the villagers. The news spread like wildfire, and now it's Wang Erniu's turn to become famous. He hit his father with a carrying pole, giving him a concussion, and scared his grandmother so much that she had a stroke.

The villagers watched as the ambulance from town put Grandma Wang and Wang Gou Dan into the vehicle. Wang Daniu was not there, San Niu was feeding the chickens and washing clothes, Si Niu was too young, and Wang Er Niu had no choice but to go along as well.

As the car drove away, leaving behind a cloud of dust, the villagers started chattering amongst themselves. "So the Yan family is so good to the Wang family! They just gave away ten catties of wild boar meat like that?"

What? Yesterday they gave us ten pounds of cornmeal and fifty cents. Have the Wang family gone mad? They're even trying to extort money from us. Oh dear, what goes around comes around. I think the old woman from the Wang family is going to be paralyzed.

It's good that they're paralyzed. This family is so heartless and unregistered. Last time, Wang Daniu was beaten for eating alone. My heart was pounding. I thought they were a good family. Turns out they're all wicked.

Wang Erniu couldn't stand it anymore, so he ran to the door and shouted, "Get out of here!" Then he slammed the gate shut.

The villagers were startled. This little brat dared to hit his own father! Hurry up and leave! As they left, they told their children that they must never be with the Wang family, especially Wang Daniu and Wang Daniu. They said that the twins should be renamed snake-rat twins.

Wang Daniu deliberately went to dig for wild vegetables early in the morning. Yesterday, the village doctor said that something had happened at her home and told her to hurry home. She also felt that she was almost fully recovered and that her family had distributed meat, so she had to hurry back to eat it. Therefore, she did not hear the village doctor say that something had happened at her home and rushed home.

As soon as I got home, I sensed something was wrong. Some family members were injured, some were asleep, and Grandma was lying on the floor with no one paying attention to her. In the kitchen, they were marinating meat, but it wasn't finished yet, and there was still more than half a pound of meat on the stove.

Seeing Wang Erniu's dejected appearance, she didn't want to talk to him. When she returned to the house, she saw Si Niu trembling and hiding in a corner. She went up to her, pulled her out, and asked her what had happened.

When Si Niu saw her eldest sister, she finally felt a little relieved. She stammered and told Da Niu about what had happened yesterday and today. Da Niu was so angry that she wanted to take a knife and kill Wang Gou Dan. With this commotion, how could she and Bei Nan ever get together?

Si Niu had no idea what Da Niu was thinking. She pitifully said that she was hungry. Wang Da Niu nodded, saying that she was hungry too. So she went to the kitchen to start cooking rice and meat. There were still ten catties of cornmeal in the rice jar, which must have been extorted from the Yan family by her grandmother. How hateful!

Despite their resentment, the dough still had to be kneaded. They decided to make dumplings with just this little bit of meat. Wang Sanniu quietly came to the kitchen from beside the chicken coop and helped Wang Daniu with the work. When the dumplings were ready, the two sisters didn't care about anything else and secretly ate a few themselves before filling a large bowl and taking it out.

Wang Erniu really had no appetite today and could only eat ten before he couldn't eat anymore. Wang Gou Dan was dizzy and couldn't eat much either. His mother and grandmother were asleep, so they didn't eat anything. For the first time in history, the four sisters were truly full and satisfied.

Early in the morning, Village Chief Ma arrived, saying that the town was going to send a car to pick up Grandma Wang and take her to the hospital. Wang Gou Dan had been suffering from a headache all night, and Village Chief Ma was also worried that something might go wrong, so he nodded and agreed to let them go together. As for the money, he said they could only deduct it from his work points at the end of the year.

Wang Daniu secretly picked up her basket and went to dig for wild vegetables. She didn't want to go to the hospital with her grandma and dad; they didn't have a penny to their name, how could they afford medical treatment? Wang Sanniu also cleverly went to the yard to feed the chickens and wash clothes. Only Wang Erniu stood foolishly to the side as she was pulled onto the cart. As for Wang Erniu, well, let's not let him impulsively throw a carrying pole at her again; that could really kill someone.

Mushroom Village will definitely not receive its year-end bonus this year. It's understandable that the winter wheat froze to death, but the old bachelor stealing grain and Widow Zhang stealing her child have already made Mushroom Village lose all face. Now, the Wang family has taken this ingrate to the extreme. Village Chief Ma's heart felt like it had been ripped apart, a sharp, piercing pain.

Fortunately, there were still good things happening in the village. The Yan family was going to build a house, and Village Chief Ma carefully selected six honest and hardworking families. When they heard that they would be given a free lunch every day and a penny, they would be fools not to take the job.

Tang Jianjun was saddened to find that he had not been selected. He deeply regretted his actions of robbing grain that day, but what was done was done, and there was nothing he could do if people did not believe him.

Someone knocked on the door: "Is Tom Cruise home?"

Upon hearing Yan Xiaoqiang's voice, Tang Jianjun rushed out and opened the courtyard gate. "Yes, yes, Qiangzi, come in and sit down."

Yan Xiaoqiang nodded and walked into the main room. Tang's wife quickly poured water and brought it to him. Yan Xiaoqiang accepted it with both hands: "Thank you, Sister-in-law Tang. I came today to see Brother Tang about something."

"Hey, tell me, tell me!" Tang Jianjun said excitedly.

Yan Xiaoqiang took out a piece of paper and handed it to Tang Jianjun. It had a dozen or so characters written on it, written by Dongnan, including things like wardrobes, kangqin (a type of heated brick bed), cabinets, chests, tables, chairs, etc.

Tang Jianjun was a carpenter by trade, so of course he could read. His eyes lit up when he saw these things. Before he could say anything, Yan Xiaoqiang said, "Brother Tang, make three sets of these things. I have three sons. Also, see how much wood you need. I'll apply for it. You'll have to come with me to cut wood. Also, one pound of cornmeal a day, and we won't pay you wages. How about it? Are you in?"

Why wouldn't I do this? It would take at least half a month to make all this, which would be twenty pounds of cornmeal. Then I could exchange it for wheat bran, which would be over a hundred pounds. I wouldn't go hungry then.

Yan Xiaoqiang took a bag of cornmeal from his basket: "Brother Tang, there's thirty jin in there. Take this and work slowly. I want you to do a good job, this stuff will last for decades, so we can't be careless. Also, thank you for Bei Nan's matter."

Tang Jianjun almost burst into tears. The Yan family was so kind. These tasks shouldn't have taken a month. The extra money would definitely be thanks to him for helping Bei Nan.

Mushroom Village was in an uproar again. Now that it's the off-season for farming, everyone is racking their brains to find work. It's great that the Yan family is building a house. Tang's wife was the first to rush to the Yan family to help with cooking, and she promised that she wouldn't stay for a meal.

That was to repay the rice and flour that her family had given her. Grandma Yan agreed with a smile. How could she really not give people food? She would just make a few more pancakes later.

Construction began in the Yan family's backyard. Grandma Yan generously took out a large bag of cornmeal and placed it next to the makeshift stove in the yard, telling Xuemei and Cuihua to cook as much as they wanted, so that at least those who were working would be well-fed, otherwise where would they get the strength to work?

The families chosen by the village chief were originally close friends of Yan Xiaoqiang. When they saw such a bag of cornmeal, they couldn't help but shake their heads. It was too extravagant, especially since the food shortage season wasn't over yet.
