Chapter Forty: School of Fish

As Yan Xiaonan slept, her consciousness unknowingly drifted outwards, still heading towards the mushroom-shaped mountain. The Siberian tiger quickly sensed something, alertly turning its body and peering in Yan Xiaonan's direction.

When Yan Xiaonan's consciousness passed by the Siberian tiger, she gently touched it to express her gratitude for saving her life that night. The Siberian tiger was overjoyed and chased its own tail in circles, looking utterly silly.

The consciousness continued to move forward. Wild rabbits darted across the forest, pheasants flew by, and even snakes became active. At some point, wild goats appeared in the forest, along with deer and other unidentified animals, busily searching for their food.

The forest was teeming with squirrels. After a winter's hibernation, they had all grown a size larger and were frolicking happily among the trees, incredibly lively. A golden squirrel sensed this and followed closely behind.

The consciousness arrived at the riverbank, where Southwest and North South were fishing. Yan Xiaonan moved her hand, and a grass carp weighing more than three pounds flew directly into Southwest's small bucket, making Southwest shout with joy.

Yan Xiaonan grinned when she saw Xinan's happy expression. When she saw Beinan and the other children's eager looks, she decided to let her mind wander even further. As a result, schools of fish swam over. Xinan saw this and quickly told Beinan to use the fishing net to catch them. In no time, the two of them filled their buckets.

There were so many fish that the children playing nearby jumped into the water with a splash, and one fish after another was thrown ashore. Bei Nan saw this and said to Xin Nan, "Xin Nan, quickly take the fish back first, and let your parents and Xue Mei catch the fish." After saying that, he went into the water to catch fish again.

Southwest grabbed the small buckets with both hands and ran home. Once in his yard, he poured the fish from the buckets into the large wooden tub where Xuemei washed clothes, and shouted loudly for his parents to hurry to the river to catch fish. After saying that, he picked up the two buckets and ran out again.

Upon seeing this, Cuihua and Xuemei quickly grabbed their baskets and ran towards the river. Yan Xiaoqiang also hurriedly followed behind with his basket. The riverbank in Mushroom Village was already crowded with people, and most of the children were in the water, throwing the fish they caught to their parents.

Bei Nan and Xin Nan worked together seamlessly, one catching fish in the water and the other picking them up on the bank. Before long, both buckets were full again. Xue Mei rushed over to help Xin Nan pick up the fish. When Xin Nan saw that his parents had come, he jumped into the river with a splash and joined Bei Nan in catching fish.

The fish came and went quickly, in just ten minutes, but everyone in the village participated in the fishing activity, and everyone's face was filled with a satisfied smile. Tonight, we can have a fish feast.

The Yan family naturally reaped the most rewards. Apart from Yan Xiaoqiang, he was too embarrassed to go and catch fish, as there were too many of his own people and he would be criticized.

Cuihua and Xuemei's baskets were half full of fish, and Southwest and North South's buckets were also full of fish. On the way home, North South kept chattering away. Xuemei analyzed it carefully and realized that they wanted to eat braised fish, steamed fish, and tofu fish soup. She couldn't help but laugh.

Southeast is chopping firewood at the foot of the mountain. After a winter, the family's firewood is almost used up. Especially Nannan, who needs to have her kang (heated brick bed) heated every night. In winter, she needs to take a bath every two or three days, but in this season, she takes a bath almost every day. Now, Xuemei has followed suit and must take a bath every two days.

As a result, the family's firewood was used up very quickly. Last time, Dad had to apply to cut down a tree to make enough for the family for the whole winter. After piling all the chopped firewood together, he tied it with a straw rope, slung it over his shoulder, and prepared to go home. Suddenly, something bit his trouser leg. He looked down and saw that it was a small dog.

Southeast's heart pounded. Where did this dog come from at this time of year? Could it be a lost wolf cub from the mountain? He couldn't bring it home, or the mother wolf would think he had stolen her cub and come back for revenge.

He forcefully pulled out his trouser leg and kicked to scare the wolf cub away. The wolf cub took a few steps back. Dongnan took off running home, looking back as he ran. Thankfully, the wolf cub was sitting there and didn't move.

As Dongnan entered his house, he glanced back again. Hmm, the little wolf hadn't followed. He hurriedly ran into the yard and slammed the door shut behind him.

Perhaps the sound of the door closing was too loud, startling Yan Xiaoqiang out. As soon as he stepped out of the main room, he saw a small dog sitting in the yard looking at him, while Dongnan was carrying firewood and peeking out through the crack in the door.

"Southeast, what are you looking at? Why did you bring a puppy back?" Yan Xiaoqiang asked curiously.

Yan Dongnan was struck dumb. He turned around and sure enough, the little wolf was sitting on the threshold of his own main room, wagging its tail at him. Dongnan thought to himself, "It's over," and collapsed to the ground.

Yan Xiaoqiang quickly went over and unloaded the firewood off Dongnan's body, asking anxiously, "Dongnan, what's wrong? What happened?"

Yan Dongnan pointed to the little wolf by the threshold: "I thought I had gotten rid of it, but I didn't expect it to get home before me."

Yan Xiaoqiang was puzzled: "Where did this puppy come from? How come it got home before you?"

"Little dog, my dear dad, did you see clearly? It's a wolf cub, a wolf cub from who knows where. If the mother wolf comes looking for it, we'll be in trouble."

Yan Xiaoqiang was stunned. He quickly turned around to look. Goodness, it really was a little wolf! What should he do? Oh right, he should ask his mother. He stumbled and ran to his grandmother's house.

Yan Xiaonan was still asleep, but her consciousness was already at her own doorstep. Wasn't that little wolf cub the same one from the alpha wolf last time? How did it end up in her house? Her consciousness then drifted towards Mushroom Mountain, but she couldn't find the pack of wolves no matter how she looked. Strange, where did they go?

A wave of dizziness washed over Yan Xiaonan, and she fell into a coma in her sleep. Unbeknownst to her, at the same moment she lost consciousness, the alpha wolf appeared atop Mushroom Mountain, gazing at Yan Xiaonan's home with eyes filled with reluctance and determination.

Grandma Yan was sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed) mending clothes. They were coats from the north and south, and from the southwest. The two naughty boys' clothes were always mended one day and torn the next. Sigh, next time I'll go to the market in town and see if I can buy any fabric to make some clothes for the two boys. These clothes are just too old and worn out.

Seeing Yan Xiaoqiang rush in in a panic, her heart skipped a beat. Had something happened again? But when she glanced at her sleeping granddaughter, she felt much more at ease: "What's wrong? Why are you in such a hurry? Nan Nan is still asleep."

"Mother, a wolf cub has come to our house." Yan Xiaoqiang's voice trembled slightly.
