Chapter Four: Approaching the New Year

Chen's mother's face darkened further; "Your old hag isn't dead yet?"

Upon hearing this, Yan Dongnan's expression changed: "Don't worry, my grandma will be fine as long as you live, and she will still be fine even after you die."

After saying that, he picked up the piece of pork and ran away. When Chen's mother saw this, she was so angry that she picked up a broom and hit Yan Dongnan with it.

Chen Xuemei was furious and snatched the broom: "You sold me for twenty catties of cornmeal back then, I'm no longer a member of your family."

"It's almost Chinese New Year, and my grandma asked me to bring you some meat. Not only did you not appreciate it, but you also cursed my grandma. You're not my mother at all; we shouldn't have anything to do with each other anymore."

Dropping the broom, he grabbed Yan Dongnan and ran. Chen Xuemei's father chased after them, snatched the meat, and said, "Dongnan, your mother's mouth grew up eating manure. Don't take it to heart. I'll teach her a lesson later. Why don't you stay and have some dinner before you leave?"

Yan Dongnan gave him a cold look. "There's no need for dinner. Consider this piece of meat Xuemei's final New Year's gift to you. From now on, our two families will pretend we don't know each other."

Watching the two figures leave, Xuemei's father felt a pang of regret. He should have asked for more grain; he had sold his daughter at a loss.

Nan Nan was especially sleepy today. She fell asleep not long after breakfast and felt like she was dreaming the whole time, with images of the mountains in her dreams.

Tigers are hunting, wild boars are grazing on the ground, pheasants and rabbits are flying around busily, squirrels are sleeping in the trees, and ginseng is secretly growing under the trees.

The tiger sensed the watchful gaze, stopped warily, and suddenly roared, the roar echoing through the forest. All the animals fled in panic, and Yan Xiaonan was also startled.

Annoyed, I reached out and gave it a slap. You damn tiger, you scared me to death! The tiger was sent flying, letting out a miserable howl and tumbling several times.

Yan Xiaonan was startled again. "No way, I'm that powerful? Should I try again?" Just as she raised her hand, the tiger turned and fled in panic, almost crashing into a tree.

My consciousness followed the tiger. I saw it turn into an old forest and enter a cliff in front of it. It jumped onto the cliff and entered a cave. It turned out that the tiger had built its den here, which was quite safe.

Consciousness left the tiger and returned to the old forest, which was truly a blessed land, abundant with ginseng and lingzhi mushrooms.

There were only a few small animals running around inside, and no fierce animals at all. I guess they probably couldn't get into this woodland.

My consciousness slowly shifted. There was a piece of land halfway down the mountain. I don't know who cleared it. The soil was as hard as stone. I guess it's unusable for farming.

As we continued walking, we saw that all sorts of fruit trees had lost their leaves, leaving only bare branches waiting for the spring rains. Hmm, not bad, there should be fruit to eat when spring comes.

Consciousness returned to the foot of the mountain, where snow covered everything, turning the trees and stones into a single color, and the land in the village was frozen solid.

The wheat in the field had all been frozen and changed color, completely wiped out. My consciousness continued to wander; one family was arguing, another was mending clothes.

Yan Xiaonan woke up, regaining her senses. It turned out that her cheat was consciousness; as long as she was aware of something, she could know what had happened.

But how come wild boars and hens lay eggs? Can you communicate with animals? I'll try again next time. My head is throbbing right now.

"Grandma, Mom, we're back!" Southwest's cheerful voice rang out from the doorway. Grandma hurriedly tried to get off the kang (a heated brick bed) and go out, but Yan Xiaonan grabbed Grandma Yan's clothes, wanting to go out with her.

Grandma Yan chuckled. "The little one wants to join in the fun, huh? Okay, Grandma will carry you." She picked up Yan Xiaonan and carried her to the main room.

Yan Xiaoqiang handed over seventy-odd yuan to Grandma Yan, and also moved the fine and coarse grains into Grandma Yan's room. Looking at the large bag of coarse and fine grains, Grandma Yan felt a little more at ease.

Yan Xiaoqiang told his mother that he was going to hunt wild game in a few days, and that the head chef at the state-run restaurant would accept it.

"Hunting wild game, huh?" Grandma looked at little Nannan in her arms, as if asking, "Can we go?"

Yan Xiaonan was conflicted. If the dream was real, of course she could go; she could even swat a tiger away with one slap. But if it wasn't real, there were tigers and wolves in the mountains, not to mention wild boars.

Seeing her granddaughter's conflicted expression, the grandmother was a little worried. Now that the family had food, meat, and money, she thought it best not to take the risk.

Yan Xiaoqiang nodded, but he secretly wanted to go once. He volunteered to go with his father in the Southwest.

Southeast stormed in, and Grandma Yan was stunned. Such a big piece of meat couldn't even be exchanged for a lunch.

Xuemei, feeling extremely embarrassed, recounted the whole story and promised that she would be a member of the Yan family in life and in death.

"Yes, he has a conscience," Grandma nodded. "If we don't want to keep in touch, then we don't have to. We were just severing ties anyway."

After thinking for a moment, he said, "Let's get married when Dongnan turns twenty."

Xuemei blushed. Dongnan would be fifteen in a year, and in five more years, she would be eighteen, which would be perfect.

Cuihua got excited, "Mom, why don't we go to the village chief after the New Year to get a piece of land, right in our backyard, and build two more houses? Then we can live there when the time comes."

Grandma Yan nodded. The land would definitely be approved, but they didn't have enough money to build the house. But they still had five years, so they could save up slowly.

On the 23rd, we worship the Kitchen God; on the 24th, we sweep the house; on the 25th, we grind tofu; on the 26th, we go to buy meat; on the 27th, we steam jujube cakes; on the 28th, we paste New Year's decorations; on the 29th, we go to buy wine; on New Year's Eve, we eat dumplings.

The Yan family got busy. Cuihua even had to squeeze out some time to make a new cotton-padded jacket for Nannan. Xuemei took the fabric and said, "Mother, I'll make it. I can rush out tonight if I have nothing to do."

Cuihua nodded. With the New Year approaching, there were many things to do at home, especially the trivial ones. Her mother was particularly happy today because her eldest brother had written that his eldest son, who hadn't been home for over ten years, would have a holiday next year and could come back.

Looking at the remittance slip and the letter, Grandma Yan burst into tears. Her eldest son was filial; even though he couldn't come back, he would send money and grain back on time, day after day, for more than ten years.

I'll be able to see my son in another 370 days. I heard that it takes more than two months by train from my eldest son's place to here, and if something else happens, it could take up to half a year.

It takes half a year to travel back and forth. How many days of vacation do they have to save up to come back once? I feel sorry for my eldest son.

Southeast has already gone to the post office twice today. The first time was for a package and money sent back by my eldest uncle, and the second time was for a package sent back by my second uncle, but without money.

Grandma Yan didn't even glance at her second uncle's letter. After Dongnan finished reading it, Grandma Yan nodded and said, "Cuihua, Erqiang is bringing his wife and children back to stay for a few days."

Clean up Xuemei's room, and let them stay for a few days when they come back. Xuemei, you can share a room with Grandma.

Cuihua obeyed Grandma Yan's words without hesitation. Without saying a word, she pulled Xuemei to clean the house. The house was very clean. Xuemei was a hardworking and good girl.
