Chapter 125 Scavenging the Scrap Yard

When Xu Ningyan came in after washing up, her messy hair, which was wet, had been combed neatly. However, in Gu Zhiyuan's eyes, it was far less attractive and cute than her fluffy, messy hair.

Xu Ningyan quickly made the bed, hung up the curtains, and opened the front and back windows to let in fresh air.

He then sat down at the table, looked at the breakfast on it, and smiled at Gu Zhiyuan: "Thank you, Brother Gu!"

Without any hesitation, she scooped up a large steamed bun and started eating it, not forgetting to hand one to Gu Zhiyuan.

Gu Zhiyuan liked Xu Ningyan's friendly and approachable attitude towards him. They were the same when they were in the Unity Brigade, always sharing good food with each other.

Yesterday, when Lin's mother was inquiring about him outside, and this little girl said those words, when they said goodbye and came out, they could still see the sympathy and worry in Lin's mother's eyes.

He felt a little unhappy at the time, and he was also worried that the little girl would be sad.

He had wanted to ask her all the way yesterday, but Xu Ningyan didn't seem to be affected at all.

He had been a little uneasy, but seeing that Xu Ningyan was not distant from him and that they were getting along just like they did in the Unity Brigade, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

He pushed the tofu pudding towards Xu Ningyan: "Have some of this. I asked them to add an extra spoonful of brown sugar."

Upon opening the lunchbox, the snow-white tofu pudding was covered with brown sugar that had dissolved into a reddish-brown syrup, looking exceptionally tempting.

Xu Ningyan took out the lunchbox she had left in the drawer, rinsed it, divided the tofu pudding into two portions, took her own portion and slurped it down, then closed her eyes contentedly.

This tofu pudding tastes much better than the ones of later generations; it has a rich bean flavor and is tender, smooth, and sweet.

Seeing Xu Ningyan eating with a beaming smile, Gu Zhiyuan couldn't help but smile as well. "You're free today, what are you planning to do?"

Xu Ningyan thought for a moment. She hadn't gotten much from the last time she went to the scrap yard, but since she had nothing to do today, she might as well go and take a look again.

Originally, I planned to go to Sun Zhou to sell another batch of goods, but Gu Zhiyuan was also in the county town. He was much more shrewd than Sun Zhou. If I ran into him, I might not be able to cover it up.

Anyway, I've already earned a few thousand yuan, so I'm not in a hurry. There are still several years before the college entrance examination is reinstated, and we'll have to wait until private house sales are allowed. There's no need to take any risks.

When Gu Zhiyuan heard that Xu Ningyan planned to go to the scrap yard, he paused in his hand holding the steamed bun. Although he didn't know why this little girl liked going to that place, it was still better than her running around aimlessly outside.

He only asked one question: "Do you have enough money on you?"

Xu Ningyan patted his pocket: "Enough!"

All my belongings are in this space. I might not be able to afford a house, but I could easily afford to go to a scrap metal yard.

That's what they said. After they finished eating and cleaned up, Xu Ningyan was about to leave when Gu Zhiyuan took out a few bills from his pocket and stuffed them into her hand: "I have things to do today. Don't settle for a simple lunch. Take this money and go to a state-run restaurant for a good meal! We'll pack a few more dishes to take to the Lin family's place tonight."

Xu Ningyan understood and quickly accepted the money: "Don't worry! I'll make sure it's done perfectly for you, brother!"

Gu Zhiyuan couldn't resist and ruffled Xu Ningyan's combed hair until it was fluffy. Under Xu Ningyan's furious glare, he touched his nose and ran away.

Xu Ningyan sullenly combed her hair again before heading to the scrap yard.

Xu Ningyan arrived early today, just as the old man at the recycling station opened the door. She slipped two candies into his hand and said, "Grandpa, I'd like to find some newspapers and books I don't need."

The old man looked around to make sure no one was watching, then lowered his voice and said, "It's in the first warehouse on the left. It was just brought here yesterday. Go look for it. Don't take what you shouldn't take!"

He waved her in.

Xu Ningyan obediently went into the first warehouse on the left. It was called a warehouse, but it was actually just a room. Apart from a skylight, there was no other light, and it looked dark and gloomy.

Compared to last time, there are definitely more things here, a mess of all sorts of things, piled up haphazardly to a height of more than a person.

As soon as I walked in, a musty smell hit my nose.

Xu Ningyan hurriedly took out a mask from her spatial storage and put it on, then covered her face with a handkerchief.

Then he squatted down and slowly began to search.

She wasn't looking for any other bargains; she just hoped that if she could find a few of those ancient books, paintings, or other materials, she could store them in her spatial storage.

It's better than having them piled up in this warehouse and eventually disposed of haphazardly.

Persistence pays off. She searched for several ancient books, all sewn together.

Some were well preserved, while others had been torn into several pieces and scattered haphazardly.

Some of them have water stains or footprints on them.

Xu Ningyan felt genuinely sorry for him.

She threw books and pages into her space, as long as she felt they had some value and they looked old.

To cover their tracks, they even found several sets of comic books.

At this time, complete sets of comic books were quite rare, especially those in good condition.

While searching, if someone came in from outside, the old man outside would cough twice, and Xu Ningyan would rummage through some old newspapers and place them nearby as cover.

After the top layer was basically searched through, in addition to some ancient books, there were also some calligraphy and paintings.

Xu Ningyan really didn't understand this. Anyway, he just threw whatever he liked or disliked into his space and would take it out for appraisal later when he had the chance.

Xu Ningyan also took calligraphy practice books and other similar items.

After she had searched the place thoroughly, she checked the time and found that only two hours had passed.

Xu Ningyan noticed that there was a small door against the wall of the room, which was slightly ajar.

Carefully pushing the door open, I found another warehouse filled with broken wooden furniture and fragments of porcelain.

The main door to the warehouse was closed, so Xu Ningyan stepped out and looked outside from this side of the doorway.

The old gatekeeper sat in a rocking chair in the shade of the courtyard, listening to the radio, and was dozing off.

The scrap metal collection station was quiet, and no one else came.

This could be an opportunity.

Xu Ningyan followed the door and went into the warehouse next door.

Although she didn't know much about antiques, she had seen antique appraisal shows and would throw small items that looked like Hainan rosewood, golden nanmu, or sandalwood into her spatial storage.

Anyway, there are so many things here, and they're all so messy, no one would probably notice if a few items were missing.

I also collected a few of the table legs and chair legs that had been dismantled and stored them in my space. Although they weren't whole pieces, they might be able to be made into beads, right?

She also picked up some of the chipped vases, dirty basins, plates, and shards of porcelain, keeping the prettiest ones.

The treasure hunt was so much fun that I completely forgot about time.

She was only awakened when she heard the old man coughing outside.

She turned and hurried out, accidentally knocking over a stack of books by the door, with two reference books falling to her feet.
