Chapter 170: Not Like a Wedding, But Like Entering the Party

I ate two biscuits to quell my hunger.

Xu Ningyan gritted her teeth: "Two yuan is too much! There are only four dishes, and we're only giving one yuan!"

Gu Zhiyuan chuckled softly. Although he couldn't turn around, he could imagine the annoyed yet adorable expression on Xu Ningyan's face, which made him feel even happier.

Xu Ningyan ate a few cookies and wasn't so hungry anymore.

He gently patted Gu Zhiyuan's back: "Big brother, you must be hungry too! Why don't you get off, I'll ride, and you can sit in the back and have something to eat?"

Gu Zhiyuan's eyes flickered, but he calmly said, "This bike hasn't been oiled in a while, so it's not easy to ride!"

He paused, then said, "There's no one ahead. I'll turn around, and you can feed me a piece."

Seeing that there was no one around, Xu Ningyan quickly pulled out a biscuit. Afraid of dropping it, she wrapped her other arm around Gu Zhiyuan's waist. "Big brother, turn around!"

Gu Zhiyuan's body stiffened involuntarily, and the car swayed slightly, but it quickly returned to normal.

He lowered his eyes, turned his head away, and opened his mouth.

Gu Zhiyuan was tall, so Xu Ningyan had to get closer to him in order to feed him the biscuit, her body almost pressed against his back.

Even so, it was still somewhat of a stretch.

Just as the cookie touched Gu Zhiyuan's lips, the bicycle bumped against a stone or something, and Xu Ningyan's hand involuntarily moved forward, feeling something soft, moist, and warm.

Then Gu Zhiyuan let out a soft "hiss" sound, as if Xu Ningyan's fingertips were being sucked by something.

Both of them froze for a brief moment.

Xu Ningyan quickly withdrew her hand, while Gu Zhiyuan, still holding the biscuit in his mouth, didn't even seem to be chewing it.

After a moment of silence, Gu Zhiyuan recovered first, ignoring the two fingers that had just poked into his mouth, and unconsciously chewed the biscuit with more force.

Xu Ningyan withdrew her fingers, feeling as if they were still slightly damp, which made her feel uncomfortable all over.

He rubbed his fingers on his pants repeatedly without leaving a trace. Although his fingers were dry, the feeling seemed to linger on them.

It's strange in a way that's hard to explain.

In her past life, Xu Ningyan always thought she would time travel, so she focused on making money and stockpiling goods to prepare for the time travel. She had no interest in dating and was a typical single mother.

Coming to my senses, my first reaction was to explain, "Um, bro, my hands are clean. I just washed them before I left—"

"Cough cough—" Even Gu Zhiyuan, who was usually calm and composed, choked on his own after hearing Xu Ningyan's words.

Luckily, he was a good cyclist; even though he was choking so much, his bike didn't fall over.

Having finally calmed down, she closed her eyes, a hint of helplessness in her voice, and said, "Give me another cookie."

Xu Ningyan didn't have time to think too much and fed Gu Zhiyuan another piece.

This time, the two worked together well and didn't make a mistake.

Along the way, every time Gu Zhiyuan turned his head, Xu Ningyan would stuff a biscuit into his mouth.

As soon as Gu Zhiyuan turned his head away, she popped another piece into her mouth.

Upon arriving at the factory gate, the two of them shared and finished off a bag of biscuits.

Upon entering the machinery factory, Gu Zhiyuan's colleagues came to greet him one after another, and they walked together toward the canteen.

Upon arriving at the second canteen, two "double happiness" characters were pasted on the door, and Mr. and Mrs. Lu were greeting guests at the entrance.

Lu's father's secretary and several colleagues who had good relations with the Lu family were also there to help.

Upon seeing Gu Zhiyuan and his group arrive, Lu's father's secretary, being very perceptive, stepped forward to greet them.

Gu Zhiyuan and several other colleagues followed suit and offered their congratulations.

Mr. Lu had a smile on his face all day, nodding to signal people to go in.

Upon entering the cafeteria, there was a finance department employee at a table on the left, helping to register donations.

Those who came this time were all colleagues from the machinery factory. Those who were closer to them received three or five yuan, while those who were more casual received one or two yuan.

Everyone here is a respectable person, and they wouldn't just give a penny or a dollar, so they brought their whole family of seven or eight people to eat.

At most, they would bring one family member, like Gu Zhiyuan and his group.

Gu Zhiyuan's colleagues all carried two coins on the ground.

Under the watchful eyes of everyone, Gu Zhiyuan took out a dollar.

Not to mention those registering money, even my colleagues came over to look.

Li Chao, the guy from the design department, couldn't help but lean over and whisper, "Boss Gu, we all work in the same office, and we all gave two yuan, but you—"

Gu Zhiyuan spread his hands, looking utterly helpless, and said, "I'll listen to my partner."

Everyone looked at Xu Ningyan.

Xu Ningyan looked even more surprised than they were: "Does your machinery factory have a minimum standard for gift money? It can't be less than two yuan? Or is there some kind of regulation? Is there a minimum amount for gift money when giving money to a leader's family? Brother, why didn't you tell me?"

The faces of those around them changed, and they shook their heads repeatedly: "No! Absolutely no such standard! There's no such rule! We... we have a relationship with their family, we're returning a favor, returning a favor—"

A few more people who were giving money as a gift arrived later. They listened to the whole thing, and the person who had taken out two coins immediately put one back in their pocket.

He was carrying five yuan and looking around for change, afraid that if he was too late, a big accusation would be put on his head.

Some people who had given two yuan or more earlier even came back later when no one was around to ask if they could give only one yuan and have the extra money returned to them...

The commotion here naturally didn't escape the notice of those who were interested. Soon, Lu's father's secretary sidled up to him and whispered a few words.

Mr. Lu's expression remained unchanged. After pondering for a moment, he gave a few instructions. The secretary showed surprise on her face, but quickly composed herself, agreed, and whispered a few words in the ear of the person registering the money.

Because of this whole incident, everyone is a bit unsettled.

Fortunately, the factory leaders arrived one after another, and the atmosphere became lively again.

Although only about ten tables were set up for the banquet, everything was arranged. Colleagues sat on one side, while the leaders naturally sat at the head table.

Two tables were also reserved for the bride's family.

After the leaders were all seated, the groom's car to pick up the bride arrived.

He was ushered in by a crowd.

Few people have seen Xu Zhenzhu, but now everyone sees that she and Lu Kai look like a perfect match, almost like a match made in heaven.

Several leaders smiled and praised them, saying, "They really are a perfect couple!"

"Indeed, they are a perfect match, a match made in heaven!"

...

Mr. Lu was surprised that Xu Zhenzhu would give the Lu family such face today. His smile became more genuine, and he said a few words of humility as usual.

The wedding ceremony at this stage is relatively simple; the officiant is invited to say a few words first.

Then the officiant led the newlyweds, holding the Little Red Book, to take their oath with the highest leader.

The scene didn't look like a wedding; it looked more like someone was about to join the Party.

Even the oath they took was to become revolutionary comrades and fight together for the revolutionary cause for life.

The officiant was the factory's propaganda minister, so he was very familiar with the job and immediately livened up the atmosphere.

Gu Zhiyuan and his group were sitting at a table quite far from the main table, surrounded by their colleagues.

Then someone whispered, "The bride has arrived and gone up to take her vows, but why haven't the bride's family members taken their seats yet?"

Indeed, those two tables reserved for the bride's family were still empty, which was quite conspicuous.
