Chapter 129 A Jerk's Mouth (1/2)

The old man objected, "How can you say my granddaughter isn't your granddaughter?"

“I don’t have a granddaughter like that.”

Mentioning Wen Bing made the old lady's chest ache with anger.

"I don't have any either. She's Wen Gaohan's daughter."

The elderly couple exchanged a glance.

This result was assumed.

When Qiao Wanyue returned home, Lu Rong had already packed everything. She also bought some food for the train journey. The food here was a bit different from what she had back home; some of the pastries were savory. Lu Rong thought her granddaughter might like them, so she bought a few extra.

After Qiao Wanyue returned, she handed the house keys to the old man, settled the bill, and the group didn't bring much stuff. They came easily and left carrying two packages.

Lu Rong and Lu Heng brought some things for the children at home.

Their train tickets were for 5 PM. Their place was very close to the train station, a five-minute walk. Lu Heng carried two small bags on his back, while Qiao Wanyue and Lu Rong walked hand in hand down the street. Lu Rong took one last look at the location of the military region.

His eyes were filled with loneliness.

This may be my first and last visit.

She used to think that once Yunzhou got married, his wife would go with him to the army.

After Yunzhou's child is born, she will come to take care of the child and also see the world's wonders with her son. Yunzhou used to write to her, telling her to come and see for herself and go out into the world.

She always said she was busy at home, so busy that she, as her son's mother, didn't even come to visit him once during the years he was in the army.

I never expected that on my first visit, I would see his tombstone.

Her eyes were filled with tears, but she secretly wiped them away with her sleeve so as not to upset her daughter-in-law.

Qiao Wanyue pretended not to see her mother-in-law secretly wiping away tears.

Lu Heng continued to joke and laugh to make them happy.

The train station was bustling with people. Lu Rong refused any special treatment, and Lu Heng bought the tickets—three hard seats—directly from the military region to his home.

Unlike when they arrived, there was no special passage for them to follow. They went through the ticket check and waited for their train just like everyone else. The station was bustling with all sorts of people carrying packages of all sizes.

They arrived quite early, and since the train was still a while away, Lu Heng found two seats for the two ladies, while he sat on the floor. The three of them chatted about their experiences over the past few days, which kept them entertained.

Lu Rong and Lu Heng chatted, while Qiao Wanyue's gaze swept around the waiting hall.

Young men and women, and elderly people, perhaps taking a train for the first time on a long journey, their faces beaming with barely suppressed excitement as they peered over the ticket gates.

The woman sitting next to me was holding a child and carrying two live chickens.

She immediately struck up a conversation with Lu Rong, "Auntie, are you taking your son and daughter-in-law to visit relatives?" She smiled and coaxed the child, not stopping her from chatting with others at all.

Lu Rong nodded in agreement.

The woman spoke casually, "I'm taking my child to find her father. He's been serving in the army on the border for ten years, and only now have we been eligible to accompany him. I'm going to join him this time." Her voice was full of pride.

Lu Rong's expression became even more dejected.

Her son is gone.

She lowered her head, and her eyes immediately welled up with tears.

The woman, oblivious to Lu Rong's unusual behavior, said smugly, "My husband is lucky. He wrote back saying he almost died, was buried in the snow-capped mountains for a day, but was found by his comrades and saved. Now he's been promoted, given a house, and immediately brought us over."

The child probably sensed the mother's happiness and started giggling.

After calming down, Lu Rongping raised her head again, her eyes full of smiles.

"You're so lucky, you're going to have a lot of good days ahead of you."

The woman, flattered, laughed uncontrollably. "I also think I'm lucky. Those unlucky women, whose husbands died on the battlefield, became widows early. My husband only survived because I'm lucky."

Lu Rong's face fell.
