"His parents have already been notified by the police in the next ward."
Qiao Wanyue nodded.
"I'm looking after Mom. Brother Heng, why don't you go get something to eat?"
Lu Heng glanced at her tired expression. She had met quite a few people that day, and the young girl must have been terrified. She must be too scared to go out alone now. He decided to go and get the food.
"Keep an eye on it here. Call the doctor if the medicine runs out."
Qiao Wanyue nodded.
Lu Heng counted out a few small bills and grain coupons and went out. He went to the nurses' station first and told the nurse that his sister had been working hard all day and asked her to keep an eye on the medicine in the ward.
The nurses knew their special status in the ward, so they naturally agreed.
Lu Heng went to the cafeteria to get his food: three meat dishes, one vegetable dish, and a corn soup. The cafeteria didn't provide lunchboxes, so he borrowed one from the cafeteria worker for 30 cents, promising to return it after he finished. The worker also gave him three pairs of chopsticks.
Carrying the lunchbox back, Qiao Wanyue stared at the IV drip. Lu Heng pushed open the door and told her to eat first. After a long day, they were both hungry. He left some food for Lu Rong and didn't wake her. After they ate, Lu Heng washed the lunchbox and took it back.
Lu Rong woke up in the middle of the night. Lu Heng helped her up, gave her something to eat, and then she fell asleep again.
the next day
People from the local police station came to visit and informed Lu Rong that the boy's family had been found.
They rushed back from home overnight to thank Lu Rong properly for saving their child.
Lu Rong declined.
But in the afternoon, a woman in high heels still pushed open Lu Rong's hospital room door.
Did you save my baby?
Lu Rong was completely confused. "Who is your baby?"
The newcomer, wearing leather shoes, exuded affected mannerisms in every gesture. "My baby is of course my baby. You must be Lu Rong. To thank you, my master said he'd give you a hundred yuan."
She pulled out ten ten-yuan bills from her pocket and arrogantly scattered them on Lu Rong's bed sheet.
A green "Great Unity" mound was scattered all over the ground.
The woman was smug, her eyes practically glued to her forehead. With her head held high and her leather shoes clicking, she turned and went into the next ward.
She is the boy's parent.
Lu Rong's eyes turned red with anger.
This person didn't come to express gratitude; they came to show off their power.
"Wanyue, don't take their money."
Qiao Wanyue picked up the money from the ground, clutched ten ten-yuan bills, and went outside.
"Aheng, hurry and go check on them." Lu Rong was afraid that Wanyue would act impulsively. Those people looked very wealthy. It wasn't that she was afraid of trouble, but she was worried that there were too many of them and Wanyue might get hurt.
Lu Heng quickly followed.
Qiao Wanyue had already pushed open the door to the next ward.
The next ward was filled with sobs. An elderly woman with white hair was holding a little boy and crying uncontrollably. Several middle-aged people around her were also wiping away tears. The woman who had been so arrogant just moments before now stood out awkwardly in the crowd.
When an outsider barged in, all eyes turned to Qiao Wanyue.
"Who are you?" The old woman looked at the girl in front of her, feeling an inexplicable sense of goodwill.
Qiao Wanyue held up ten ten-yuan bills in her hand and pointed to the arrogant woman from earlier. "I am the daughter-in-law of the man who saved this little boy. This woman just threw a hundred yuan into our ward. My mother-in-law said we were just being kind and didn't expect anything in return. I picked up the money from the ground one bill at a time and came to return it to you."
The woman's expression immediately changed.
"What nonsense are you talking about? When did I throw money away? I clearly delivered it respectfully. Don't frame me." As the woman spoke, tears streamed down her face. The man standing at the far end couldn't stand it any longer and came over to put his arm around the woman's shoulder.
"Comrade, you can eat whatever you want, but you shouldn't say whatever you want."
