Chapter 14 Sending Things to Lu Yunzhou (2/2)

Uncle Yang was the village's cowherd. He was too old to work in the fields, so the village head assigned him a job: when he wasn't farming, he would drive an oxcart to take villagers to the city. This provided the village with an extra source of income and made things more convenient for everyone.

Qiao Wanyue gave Uncle Yang a dime. There weren't many people coming to town on weekdays, and it took quite a while before four or five aunties and grandmas came. Once there were eight people on the oxcart, Uncle Yang cracked his whip, and the cart started moving.

Qiao Wanyue was too lazy to talk and huddled in a corner, but the gossipy aunties in the village wouldn't let her off the hook.

Qiao Wanyue gave an ambiguous answer, saying only that she didn't know, and that it was all up to her elders to decide who she would marry.

These words reached the old woman's ears: My sister likes Yang Huaiyuan, but my mother forced me to marry Lu Yunzhou for the sake of her reputation.

A strong, gossipy glint flashed in their eyes.

Qiao Wanyue was "forced" by them to reveal a lot of inside information.

After driving for half an hour, the car arrived in the county town.

"Noon, or we'll stop waiting for you," Uncle Yang instructed everyone.

Qiao Wanyue got out of the car and ran away from the middle-aged women as if fleeing. The look in their eyes as they watched Qiao Wanyue's back suddenly changed from heartache to mockery. How could this little girl be so lucky?

An uneducated village girl actually married a military officer.

Qiao Wanyue naturally heard this, but she didn't react.

It's human nature to dislike others being better than oneself, and she won't waste her breath arguing with these people.

Qiao Wanyue went to the bus stop. Uncle Yang's bus stop was just inside the county town. It would take another half an hour to walk to the post office. The county town's buses were very convenient; you could travel all over the county town for just one cent.

The bus arrived, and Qiao Wanyue squeezed onto it, handing the cashier a dime. The cashier was an older woman, and there weren't many people on the bus. She pointed to a seat and told Qiao Wanyue to sit there.

Qiao Wanyue naturally wouldn't stand since she had a seat; after thanking him, she sat down.

"Wanyue, over here."

Brother Lu saw Qiao Wanyue with two braids from afar as he stood at the post office entrance.

Qiao Wanyue got out of the car and jogged to Brother Lu's side.

Standing next to Brother Lu was his mother.

Hello, Auntie.

The more Lu's mother looked at Qiao Wanyue, the more she liked her. She reached out and grabbed her hand, saying, "Wanyue, there's no need to send anything to Yunzhou. He has everything he needs in the army."

Qiao Wanyue handed the heavy box to Brother Lu. It contained some fruits and vegetables she had prepared last night, all picked from her spatial storage, as well as some medicine she had prepared.

"Auntie, it's alright. This is my apology to Brother Yunzhou on behalf of my parents."

Lu's mother secretly sized her up.

The box faintly smelled of apples. These kinds of apples were only available at the county's supply and marketing cooperative. This girl must have bought them early in the morning without telling the Qiao family. Lu's mother felt a pang of tenderness.

This little girl knows how to get along with people better than the Qiao family.

She must treat this girl well from now on.

Qiao Wanyue was unaware that a box of apples had made Lu's mother even more fond of her.

The three of them walked to the post office.

Lu's mother was reluctant to spend the money and planned to use ordinary mail.
