"What's wrong?"
Wen Gaohan rushed out with messy hair and a nervous expression.
Qiao Wanyue's gaze fell on the crack in the door that wasn't closed properly.
Does he not close the door when he sleeps at night?
Did you come out as soon as you heard the noise? Were you afraid something might happen to you?
"Thirsty? Want some water?"
Wen Gaohan visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
He rubbed his eyes. "I'll go get it."
When he returned, he had two clear cups in his hands. He walked up to her and said, "One cup of sweet water, one cup of warm water."
Qiao Wanyue took the glass of warm water and brought it to her lips. The temperature was just right. The warm water flowed into her mouth, instantly relieving her dry and itchy throat. After drinking the glass of water, she felt a little unsatisfied.
Just as he was about to say something, he turned and went into the kitchen, and when he came out, he had a glass of water in his hand.
He silently took the cup, then handed over the cup filled with water. The whole process took less than half a minute. After drinking two cups of lukewarm water, the urge in his throat was completely suppressed.
Before she could even touch it, he took the cup away.
"Go back to sleep," he said softly.
Qiao Wanyue then noticed that there seemed to be a light left on in the corridor.
She whispered, "Okay."
The two of them just stood there.
He waited for her to enter the room.
She waited for him to put the cup down.
Wen Gaohan noticed that his daughter didn't make any other moves, and seemed to have sensed her thoughts. He put the cup in the kitchen, rinsed it with water, and then put it in the cupboard before coming out of the kitchen.
"Go to sleep," he said again.
Qiao Wanyue nodded this time.
He turned and went into the room.
Click
Qiao Wanyue closed the door and reached out to lock it, but then, as if remembering something—perhaps the gap left on the opposite door, or perhaps because the water temperature was just right—she quietly released her hand from the lock.
As I drifted off to sleep, a faint smile graced my lips.
Wen Gaohan stood at the door for a long time, not hearing the click. He thought she was still awake until he heard faint breathing. He was stunned for a moment.
Then, the smile on his lips grew wider and wider.
He then turned and went inside.
The door was still not closed properly.
Dawn
"Why do you laugh so creepily?"
Grandma Wen got up very early and walked around the courtyard with her old friends a few times. When she got home for dinner, she saw Wen Gaohan sitting in the living room, grinning foolishly, with drool practically dripping from his mouth.
Wen Gaohan chuckled.
Like a silly boy.
Grandma Wen said she couldn't bear to watch.
Not long after, when Qiao Wanyue got up, she saw that the two elderly people were also up. She felt a little embarrassed. It was a bit too much to sleep in at their house. "You got up so early."
Grandma Wen, "You're getting old, you don't need much sleep, how's your sleep?"
Qiao Wanyue: "Very good."
"Come and eat."
On the table were the fried dough sticks she had specifically requested last night, a whole basket of them, many bowls of spicy soup, and all sorts of breakfast items. Without a doubt, Wen Gaohan had brought the entire breakfast stall back with him.
After the meal, Wen Gaohan took the person back to school.
After returning to the military region, Political Commissar Wen Gaohan was quite different today.
"What's wrong with you today? You were all smiles while training your men?" The political commissar looked at him suspiciously when he returned to his office, almost wondering if he had been possessed by someone.
Wen Gaohan shook off his hand and chuckled, "My daughter's guard against me is slowly decreasing."
She didn't lock the door when she went to sleep last night!
He didn't even say thank you when he took her back to school today!
