Qiao Wanyue made two dishes: minced pork with eggplant and braised fish. The fish was caught by Brother Lu in the river before the banquet. It was a grass carp weighing one pound. Apart from having a lot of bones, Qiao Wanyue specially fried it in oil before putting it back into the pot.
When Mr. and Mrs. Lu returned from work, they saw a table full of dishes. Mr. Lu pursed his lips and said, "Did your wife cook this?"
"Dad, eat." Lu Hui lay on the table, staring longingly at the dishes.
Old Master Lu went over and kissed his son's face, getting his face covered in saliva, before going to the yard to wash his hands.
Lu Rong brought steamed buns and flatbreads to the dining table. Yang Lin left the Yang family home near lunchtime, already starving. When he got home, he forgot to wash his hands and went straight to the dining table to grab the flatbreads with his dirty hands.
"Go wash your hands." Lu Rong slapped his hand without any politeness.
He winced in pain and glared at her with displeasure.
But I still obediently went and washed my hands.
At the dinner table, before Lu Rong could even say "let's eat," Yang Lin couldn't wait to start eating. He took half of a fish and put it in his own bowl, which made Lu Rong frown. He then poured the other half into a clean bowl.
Boss Lu frowned, and everyone knew exactly what he was going to do.
Lu Rong snatched the bowl from him and kicked him in the calf. "If you're not going to eat, get out."
Yang Lin's face was gloomy.
Lu Rong snatched the other half of the fish and gave it directly to Xiao Hui, Sister-in-law Lu, and Boss Lu. The three large pieces of fish were divided into Qiao Wanyue's bowl, while Yang Lin's bowl still had the other half of the fish.
But to prevent Lu Rong from taking it, he took a bite, and Lu Rong, disgusted, refused to take it anymore.
She picked up the braised pork on the table and divided it directly into the bowls of her grandson, son, and daughter-in-law, leaving none for Yang Lin.
Yang Lin protested, holding his chopsticks.
"Get out if you're not going to eat." Lu Rong said coldly, silently placing a bowl of pickled vegetables in front of him.
She watched him coldly.
Yang Lin gritted his teeth, picked up the bowl, and went out.
Qiao Wanyue twitched her lips as she watched her father-in-law pick out the parts she had bitten, and then take the half-eaten fish from the bowl to the next table.
Her expression was beyond incomprehension.
"Has he always been like this?"
Lu Rong scoffed, "The Yang family is broke. Old Mrs. Yang kept crying to him, saying that we have plenty of meat and fish, but she, that old hag, can't even afford a bite of tofu. Your father-in-law made a scene with me this afternoon, but I refused."
Qiao Wanyue understood immediately.
"Don't talk, eat quickly." Lu Rong shoveled a couple of mouthfuls of rice into his bowl and urged his daughter-in-law to eat quickly, afraid that Yang Lin would snatch the food from their mouths.
Qiao Wanyue shared some of the meat in her bowl with Lu Rong, but Lu Rong refused. Qiao Wanyue insisted, and the two women almost got into a fight. Lu Rong's sister-in-law said, "If you're not going to eat it, give it to me."
Lu Rong laughed angrily, hit her on the head with a chopstick, and stopped pulling at her.
The mother and her children thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
When Yang Lin returned and saw that there was only one plate of food left, his face darkened so much it could drip ink.
The Lu family ignored him. After the meal, the eldest son of the Lu family cleaned up the dishes, while his wife held the child and studied poetry.
There's not much to do at this time; after dinner, everyone goes to bed.
Lu Rong wasn't home; she went next door to help out. Yang Dazhuang is getting married tomorrow, and Lu Rong has been getting along well with the villagers lately. Whenever someone has an event, they invite her over.
After washing up, Qiao Wanyue went into her room and locked the door.
Lu Rong studied in the small wooden cabin for three hours, and then returned.
After she blew out the candles, she fell asleep.
Lu Rong woke him up the next day.
