“But on such a joyous day, you’re locking the groom out. That’s outrageous. Even if you’re angry, you can lock the door, hit him, or yell at him, I won’t care.” Yang Dazhuang saw Zhou Wenwen’s reddened eyes and wanted to interrupt his grandmother.
Aunt Man changed the subject abruptly, sniffing, "Dazhuang's grandfather and father passed away early. I'm an old woman, and my only thought before I die is to see Dazhuang and his wife living happily together, and to give me another grandson." She forced out two tears.
Yang Dazhuang panicked and hurriedly wiped away his grandmother's tears. "Grandma, don't cry. Dazhuang will take good care of you, and you will live a long and healthy life. I will let you hold your grandson."
Aunt Man sniffed. "What grandson are you going to hold? You can't even get into the bride's house." Aunt Man looked sad.
Yang Dazhuang pursed his lips, "Grandma, I'll coax Wenwen into the house and she'll let me in. Don't be sad."
Aunt Man choked.
You're kidding me. She doesn't want to consummate the marriage with you.
Aunt Man suffered a heart attack. She thought to herself, He Xiaoman was shrewd her whole life, but how come her grandson is so stubborn?
Aunt Man changed the subject, "Wenwen, I won't stop you from doing whatever you want, but I want to ask you today, are you willing to marry Yang Dazhuang? If not, return the three turns and one ring and the bride price, and we'll be even. You can marry again, and we'll marry again."
Yang Dazhuang became anxious.
He won't marry anyone else.
But after being glared at by his grandmother, Yang Dazhuang bit his lip until blood seeped out, and dared not say another word.
Zhou Wenwen was stunned.
She never expected that her petty tantrum would actually provoke this old woman to force her.
She's already married into the Yang family; it would be incredibly shameful to be sent back.
Furthermore, her dowry had already been taken by her mother and given to her sister-in-law, so even if the engagement was called off, she would have to pay for it herself.
She has no money.
Meanwhile, Zhou Wenwen stroked her belly, lowered her head unwillingly, and whispered, "Grandma, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have acted like that. It's my first time getting married, and Dazhuang was too reckless. I just wanted to teach her a lesson."
Zhou Wenwen came up with an excuse that wasn't really an excuse.
Yang Dazhuang had always cherished her and would never have dared to touch her, but she pretended to show her reddened wrist, looking quite pitiful.
Aunt Man saw right through her thoughts.
She went along with it, "Dazhuang, apologize to your wife. Look what your cronies did to Wenwen's hand. On this joyous occasion, you should make amends to your wife." She turned to the others, "Let's all go out first. Our Yang family is hosting a banquet tomorrow, and as is customary, the new bride will toast the elders of the clan."
In Xiahe Village, there is a custom of holding a banquet for the elders of the clan on the first day of the wedding, in order to thank them for helping with the marriage. However, since most families are not wealthy, few families specially prepare meat and vegetables for the banquet. Instead, they give meat and vegetables from the wedding day as a token of gratitude.
Everyone was pleased to hear Aunt Man say that.
I can eat meat one more time now.
They left happily.
Aunt Man went out, and before she left, she gave Zhou Wenwen a sharp look.
The implication is that we're all foxes; I've given you a chance, and if you're going to keep pretending, then you'll keep pretending forever.
If you're not going to pretend, then I'll pluck your fox fur.
Zhou Wenwen angrily tore the bed sheet to shreds, cursing inwardly for that old hag not dying yet.
The door was closed, leaving only Yang Dazhuang and Zhou Wenwen inside.
A moment later, the sounds of things being smashed and Yang Dazhuang gently coaxing someone could be heard again inside the house.
Aunt Man stood in the courtyard and sighed softly.
