The knocking attracted Sister-in-law Lu.
She came out wearing a coat.
Lu Rong opened the door and saw his two daughters-in-law standing at the door.
Her eyes were red-rimmed, and she forced a smile. "Come in."
In Xiahe Village, no household has electricity these days. Families with better financial means use candles, while those with less means still use the old-fashioned kerosene lamps.
Lu Rong lit the kerosene lamp. Since Lu Yunzhou joined the army, the Lu family's conditions had improved significantly, and Lu Rong himself was reluctant to light candles.
She put down the matches and sat cross-legged on the bed.
"Eldest daughter-in-law, does your face still hurt?" She looked at Sister-in-law Lu with guilt.
Sister-in-law Lu nodded, "It hurts."
A hint of helplessness flashed in Lu Rong's eyes.
It's all her fault.
Sister-in-law Lu muttered to herself, "Mom, this has nothing to do with you. The wound will stop hurting once it heals. Don't feel guilty."
Qiao Wanyue smiled and patted her sister-in-law, "Sister-in-law, I once learned a Chinese medicine for removing scars from an old Chinese medicine doctor. I'll brew it for you, and in less than six months, the scars on your face will be gone." Qiao Wanyue comforted her.
Sister-in-law Lu thought Qiao Wanyue was just trying to comfort her.
How could such a big scar just disappear like that?
She appreciated her sister-in-law's kindness.
Lu Rong stared blankly out the window, her voice tinged with sadness, "Has my life been so tragic?"
She smiled wryly.
"When I was little, all the girls my age envied me. My parents only had me as a daughter, and my father was a village leader. While other little girls couldn't even get enough to eat, I could wear dresses and drink milk powder."
They had to help with chores at such a young age, but I didn't. My mother would even give me money to buy snacks at the supply and marketing cooperative. I thought life would continue like this, that my father would take care of everything if the sky fell.
Her eyes glistened with tears. "But one day, my father fell ill, and the villagers started cursing us behind our backs for having no descendants. I was so angry that I wanted to find a son-in-law to live with us and bring honor to our family."
“Before my father died, he held my hand and said, Rong, I regret that I didn’t leave you a brother when I was young. I am very content with my life. My only regret is that I didn’t take good care of you.”
“Before my father died, he was still thinking about me. He hid most of the family’s wealth to prevent me from acting impulsively and giving all the money to Yang Lin. He also won over my cousin Lu Mantang to protect me.”
“He schemed his whole life, and I still ended up like this.”
"I'm sorry, Dad." Lu Rong buried his face in his knees and cried like a child.
In the quiet night, a suppressed and painful cry could be heard.
After a long while, Lu Rong burst into tears, releasing all the pent-up emotions in her heart. She clutched her chest, the heavy emotions almost bending her over, her eyes blurred with tears. Suddenly, she saw her father appear before her.
Her father said sternly, "Lu Rong, what are you crying for? How old are you?"
For a moment, Lu Rong was lost in thought, and she reached out to hug her father.
She murmured, "Father, you're gone, and they all bully me."
"Dad, I'm sorry, you're right, Yang Lin is unreliable."
The old man reached out and patted Lu Rong's head. "Rong, in this life, nothing is ever perfect. I know you've worked hard, but your daughter-in-law and son are both filial. If you treat them well, they won't abandon you."
“Rong, wipe away your tears, stop crying. You’re over sixty years old, but you’re still a little crybaby from when you were a child. Your mother down there is worried sick about you. She sent me up to tell you that we are all fine. You should live with your daughter-in-law and don’t care about that bastard Yang Lin. Your father will not let him get away with this.”
He finished speaking in one breath, and the dark figure in front of Lu Rong became fainter and fainter.
Until you can't see anything at all.
Lu Rong cried out in a panic, "Father, Father, don't go, don't abandon me."
No one responded to her anymore.
Lu Rong suddenly stood up, barefoot on the ground, and called out with a blank look in his eyes, "Father, don't go."
