Chapter 28 The marriage proposal turned out to be just a joke.

There were only two quilts in the house. My mother was too frail to move around much and couldn't get off the kang (a heated brick bed) to go to the kitchen to add firewood.

The coal in the house had long since run out.

Lin Mo quietly observed for a while, then went out into the courtyard and into the kitchen to add firewood to the stove.

Firewood burns faster than coal, so you have to add more every now and then.

In the mountain village courtyard, every household's house has this layout, with the stove in the kitchen connected to the kang (heated brick bed) inside the house, so that when cooking, the heat from the stove can also be transferred to the kang.

It's warmer in winter, but it's a real pain in summer. When you cook in the summer, the house gets so hot that it's unbearable to live in.

In short, the house was almost bare, with nothing at all, and Lin Mo had far too many things to solve.

Food, clothing, fuel—everything was urgently needed.

My mother's tattered coat has been worn for many years. If we were to take it apart, the cotton wadding inside would probably be yellowed and blackened.

He spent the whole night thinking about the important matters at home, and spent the entire night in the kitchen adding firewood without getting much sleep.

Around 10 a.m., the village chief's son, Wu Jicai, brought back a doctor from the county.

The doctor looked very unwell. Patients were all rushing to the health center, so why should he, as a doctor, personally go to the mountain village?

Upon arrival, we conducted a brief examination of Aunt Lin's body and head.

It's basically confirmed that there's nothing seriously wrong.

Injuries to the bones and tendons are not a big deal, and if the arms and legs are not broken, then it is even less of a problem.

"It's just a little bleeding and some minor bone and joint injuries, is that really worth making me come all this way..."

The county doctor grumbled his dissatisfaction, glanced at the screen briefly, and prepared to leave.

"You'll get better with rest. If you want some medicine, just bring the money and go to the county health center yourself."

For his mother's sake, Lin Mo endured the doctor's expression and asked as politely as possible:

"Can't you prescribe some medicine now?"

The doctor glanced at him sideways:

"I'm not talking to you anymore. Prescribing medicine costs money. If you don't have money, just rest and don't take any medicine. You'll recover eventually."

These words filled Lin Mo with resentment, and indeed, there was no money at home; he couldn't afford a single penny.

When there were still a few dollars left at home, he would have spent it all on buying meat and licking Jiang Ying.

The more I think about it, the more I want to slap myself.

Fortunately, I traded three rabbits for 27 kilograms of rice yesterday, so we still have some grain at home. My mother won't have to eat sweet potatoes and drink coarse grain porridge to stay healthy.

Since the rice couldn't be moved, Lin Mo thought of another way:

"Um, can I get medicine on credit?"

Upon hearing this, the doctor didn't mince words and directly criticized him:

"What are you thinking? You want to pay on credit? I'm just a doctor, the clinic isn't my private property."

"Fine, fine," Lin Mo had no choice but to give up.

"If you can't prescribe medicine, can you write a prescription? I'll figure out how to get the herbs according to the prescription myself."

Wu Ji watched as Lin Mo got entangled with the doctor, but instead of getting the medicine, he only managed to get a prescription.

After the doctor wrote a prescription for Lin Mo, he quietly led the donkey cart to take the doctor back to the county.

Outside the Lin family courtyard, Wu Ji had just driven away with the doctor in his cart.

Jiang Ying arrived quietly shortly after.

The commotion in the canteen last night was so intense that several of the female educated youths huddled together, crying and sobbing.

The men in the village couldn't bear to see young girls crying, so they said they would only tie up the male educated youth.

That's how the female educated youth escaped being tied up.

The news of the resumption of the college entrance examination has been in the village for several days, but the county has not yet sent any notice to them to return to the city.

Jiang Ying figured it must be because of her family background.

She has to marry Lin Mo and register her household under Lin Mo's household registration in order to qualify for the college entrance examination. After the exam, she will be assigned to a university based on her scores.

We'll get a divorce then.

So at this moment, she pretended to come and visit Aunt Lin, hoping to build a good relationship with Lin Mo.

Just as she arrived at the Lin family's gate, she inadvertently caught a glimpse of Su Xiaoxiao approaching from a great distance behind her.

Feeling annoyed, she turned and walked towards Su Xiaoxiao, her words dripping with sarcasm:

"Oh, so you're here to see Lin Mo? Looks like the rumors in the village are true. You really are entangled with Lin Mo in private?"

Upon hearing this, Su Xiaoxiao's expression inexplicably tensed up:

"What nonsense are you talking about? I came to see Aunt Lin."

"Hehehe," Jiang Ying still couldn't hide her sarcasm:

"Everyone in the village knows about my relationship with Lin Mo. Lin Mo only has eyes for me. You didn't actually take Lin Mo's joke seriously, did you?"

That day, in front of many villagers, Lin Mo proposed marriage to Su the carpenter.

Although she was frightened at the time, she couldn't help but take those words seriously.

Could it really just be... a joke?

He also promised to prepare the wedding gift money and the three gold pieces and five other items within three months...

He looked very serious when he said these words.

But... is it really just a joke?

Indeed, compared to the educated youth from the city, I do seem to be at a disadvantage in terms of conditions.

"Hmph, why don't you hurry up and leave? If the villagers see you, who knows what they'll say about you!"

"You're shameless for ruining other people's relationships, but I do have a conscience!"

Jiang Ying rudely drove Su Xiaoxiao away.

The harsh words made Su Xiaoxiao feel upset, and for a moment she felt like crying.

Out of fear of being seen by the villagers, she lowered her head and turned away.

She lowered her head, clutching two paper medicine packets in her hands, containing precious white pills for anti-inflammation.

My father used to injure his hand while working as a carpenter, and this is what cured him.

Aunt Lin has fallen and injured herself, so she can definitely eat this too.
