The excited village chief practically stumbled back to the production team and launched into a tirade over the village loudspeaker.
"A meeting is in session! A meeting is in session!"
"All villagers! Bring a burlap sack! Come to the team headquarters for a meeting!"
After he finished howling, he called people to fetch all six of the production team's only donkey carts to the Lin family's house.
I was worried the rabbits would suffocate, so as soon as I got home, I put them all inside the shed.
This time, we'll have to stuff the burlap sacks all over again.
The three of them worked for another twenty minutes or so, counting and loading the rabbits from the sacks onto the donkey cart, totaling 150 rabbits.
The villagers who arrived at the team one after another still didn't know what the village chief was trying to do by yelling at them like that.
"Hmph, there's never anything good at these big meetings. Either they're criticizing someone for owing too much in debt, or they're assigning collective labor."
"Not necessarily, it's possible they'll issue food coupons?"
"Keep dreaming! It's not even the end of October yet. We're way off. Let's just wait and see!"
"That's right, we'll have to wait at least another two months."
"They must have called us here to do collective work. Last time they called us here, it was to load coal."
"By the way, have you saved enough coal for the winter?"
"You could never save enough in a lifetime. Each family only received 30 jin of grain coupons a month, not even enough for food, let alone burning coal?"
The villagers chattered amongst themselves, their voices filled with discontent over the lack of supplies.
Chen Gang watched the throngs of people gathered along the edge of the field, wondering what Wu Fengshou was up to, and could only stand at the entrance of the supply and marketing cooperative and keep an eye on them from afar.
"Everyone! Call the heads of households out and line up! Five lines!"
"Rabbits are being distributed! One for each family!"
"Queue up quickly!!"
Wu Fengshou walked over from a distance, and after spotting the villagers, he started shouting at the top of his lungs.
The villagers were stunned when they heard this.
What?
Divide the rabbits?
One per family?
"Village chief, do you need money or coupons? We don't have a penny to our name, we can't afford it."
"We don't have any money, can you write me an IOU?"
At this moment, most of the villagers were thinking that they certainly couldn't let them get something for nothing; they had to squeeze some money out of their pockets.
The village chief, clutching a megaphone, beamed with delight.
"Free of charge, it's free!"
"Queue up quickly!"
Upon hearing this, the villagers were immediately agitated in surprise.
They were making a fuss as they rushed to squeeze to the front.
Ah Jun's aunt, Wang Yanli, had a shifty look on her face. As soon as the news reached her ears, she immediately grabbed her man and rushed to the front.
By the time others realized what was happening, they could only line up behind them.
Wang Sixin also came over with his parents, and the two of them quickly pushed Old Wang inside.
Even though the family is now wealthy, who would complain about having too many good things?
Miao Fenfa and Miao Shouzheng also wanted to squeeze inside, but they were stopped by Miao Qingsong and Miao Wang respectively.
He whispered something in their ears, and the two old men's eyes immediately lit up.
"Oh, so our two families aren't included, and our rabbits have already been released to the Lin family? Good, good."
150 rabbits seemed like a lot, but the villagers had even more.
In a flash, they were all snatched up and divided up, and the unlucky rabbits were grabbed by the ears by villagers who didn't know anything about rabbits, and most of the rabbits' ears were broken.
"Don't grab their ears, unless they're cut off before you kill them," Lin Mo shouted, reminding the villagers.
Old Wang had already stuffed the rabbits he had received into the sack he had brought. Upon hearing this, he immediately squatted down and opened the sack to take a peek.
"Hey, the ear's really drooping, it broke off so easily?"
"Oh dear, ours broke too."
"It's alright, it ... not like I'm going to die."
The village chief was so busy he was dizzy. After distributing all the rabbits, he still had two left.
Oh, one of them is from our family.
The other one belongs to Chen Gang's family.
Looking up, I saw Chen Gang sitting at the entrance of the supply and marketing cooperative, expressionless, seemingly lost in thought.
The dozen or so male educated youths were also there, their faces showing envy.
"Chen Gang, don't you want it? If you don't want it, we'll take it home!" Wu Fengshou shouted at Chen Gang.
Chen Gang knew perfectly well that the village chief, Lin Mo, and those other men surnamed Miao had gotten these rabbits together.
With the opening up of family-based farming, some people have created such a large-scale operation.
If this is tolerated, speculative and profiteering activities will likely only become more and more outrageous in the future!
"If you don't want it, then forget it."
"Why don't you want it anymore?"
Just as Wu Fengshou felt he was being treated coldly and was about to take the rabbit himself, he realized that he was being ignored.
Despite his inward disgust, Chen Gang's body betrayed him, and he finally moved, quickly walking over and picking up his rabbit to hug it.
"Tch, look at your stubbornness." Wu Fengshou said with disdain.
But the matters to be discussed at this conference are not yet finished.
Lin Mo is a real lad; judging by his posture, he really can catch a thousand in five days.
He can manage to distribute at least five rabbits to each household.
While the villagers were happily and curiously admiring their own rabbit hutches, the village chief made a special trip home.
Grit your teeth and bear the heartache.
He pulled a rabbit out of his own shed.
"Now we'll teach you how to butcher a rabbit so that its fur and pelt won't be damaged."
With a shout into the broken loudspeaker, Wu Fengshou skillfully and deftly grabbed the two hind legs of a rabbit.
Before the rabbit, which was being held upside down, could even struggle a few times, it was struck on the back of the head with the thick stick he was holding.
