Chapter 83: Can I go back to school?!

Jiang Ying's few words dealt a heavy blow to Chen Xin, and he couldn't think of any other way but to give in.

When Su the carpenter was making a fuss about being discharged from the hospital because he thought the hospital fees were too expensive, he made a special trip back to say hello, and then planned to go back to the village dejectedly.

"Dad, we've already paid the deposit, and it's getting dark outside, so let's stay here for the night."

Despite Su Xiaoxiao's repeated attempts to persuade him, Su the carpenter wouldn't listen and struggled to get up and walk back.

At this moment, Lin Mo saw Chen Xin walking over and noticed that Su the carpenter was so stubborn and insisted on going home.

He quickly came up with a solution:

"Chen Xin, didn't you say you knew where to buy college entrance exam textbooks? Shall we go now?"

"Xiaoxiao, tell Uncle Su to rest well, let's go buy books!"

Upon hearing this, Su the carpenter naturally thought of his daughter's previous statement about wanting to go to school.

He wasn't against his daughter going to school, but rather worried that his family might not be able to afford it.

"Uncle Su, we said we'd support Xiaoxiao's schooling, and we mean it. Let's go buy the books right now!"

Su Xiaoxiao was already under pressure, having just owed Lin Mo five hundred yuan.

Now he wants to buy himself more books...

Even if I might marry him in the future, I can't spend his money like this.

"Hey, right, it's a rare treat to come to the county, it would be nice to browse the bookstore," Chen Xin roughly understood Lin Mo's meaning, and since he wanted to get closer to Lin Mo, he quickly chimed in:

"It's a journey of over a hundred miles to and from the county, it's not easy."

The two of them sang in unison, making Su the carpenter forget all about making a fuss and wanting to go home.

"Auntie, you stay here and keep watch, we'll be right back."

"Get some rest tonight, and don't leave. Otherwise, you'll definitely worry if Xiaoxiao, a young lady, leaves alone with two young men like us."

With that, Lin Mo pulled Su Xiaoxiao away.

This has really put Su the carpenter in a difficult position. His own young daughter has gone to the county alone with two young men, and he can no longer make a fuss about going back to the village.

If they go back to the village, wouldn't their daughter have to go back to the village alone with those two young men?

That won't do; it would have a bad influence.

"Oh, just rest, don't bother anymore." Aunt Su was no longer worried about the money. She had already borrowed it and given it to the hospital, so there was no point in worrying about it anymore.

You should just focus on recovering.

The county was bustling with activity. Not only was Su Xiaoxiao looking around curiously, but Chen Xin was also glancing around aimlessly.

I haven't been to the county for many years. The county has changed everywhere. This change doesn't mean that the whole thing has become better or better, but rather that the whole thing has become unfamiliar.

A large paper mill that opened on the street a few years ago has now been transformed into a glass factory.

The once deserted bus station has been transformed into a textile factory.

However, the only department store in the county is still there, and the Xinhua Bookstore on the second floor of the department store is still there.

He breathed a sigh of relief.

"Xiaoxiao, do you want to study humanities or sciences?" Chen Xin asked Su Xiaoxiao with practiced ease.

"What liberal arts? What science?" Su Xiaoxiao was completely unfamiliar with these two terms and couldn't understand what they meant.

Seeing that she didn't speak, Lin Mo took the opportunity to explain:

"Liberal arts majors study management, accounting, and the like, and can work in clerical positions after graduation. Science majors study how to build machines and make parts, and can work as production workers in factories after graduation."

After an explanation, Su Xiaoxiao understood.

Humanities subjects are management and accounting, so of course you should take the humanities exam.

In her limited understanding, her first reaction was that if she were to work as a production worker, she, as a young woman, wouldn't have the strength to do heavy work, and she couldn't understand why skilled workers required almost no physical strength.

"Humanities," Su Xiaoxiao replied shyly, though she hadn't yet decided whether to buy the book.

The book was bought with Lin Mo's money, and she was still conflicted about it.

"That's all there is to the humanities."

Chen Xin ran around the area with practiced ease and returned with a pile of books in just a few minutes.

There are six subjects: Chinese, Mathematics, English, Politics, History, and Geography. There are two or three books for each subject.

The price is listed at the bottom right corner of the back of the book: one yuan and one yuan fifty. The price is acceptable.

Su Xiaoxiao touched the brand-new book and carefully opened it to take a look.

Even though I don't understand it, I'm so happy.

There are still eight or nine months until the next college entrance examination, which is still plenty of time.

With books, you can begin to learn.

"Lin Mo, thank you. I'll pay you back as soon as possible," Su Xiaoxiao said softly.

Lin Mo smiled. "Return what? What do you mean, 'return'?"

Offering yourself in return?

Okay, okay.

"Let's go."

Chen Xin was very envious of Lin Mo for being able to buy so many books for Su Xiaoxiao, and they were all the latest editions.

He wanted to buy it, but he didn't have the money.

Leaving the department store, the three of them had different feelings: one was beaming with joy, another was secretly pleased, and Chen Xin was the one who was disappointed.

Walking dejectedly back to the clinic, after walking quite a distance, Chen Xin suddenly noticed something unusual on the street—

Many of the people coming and going on the street are young, and some of these young people are dressed neatly, while others are dressed in shabby and tattered clothes.

But they were all carrying bags filled with books.

This is very wrong.

As a young man wearing a tattered coat and carrying a bag of books passed by Chen Xin, Chen Xin politely reached out and stopped him.

"Comrade, excuse me... are you preparing for an exam?"

"Yes," the young man replied without hesitation.

"The college entrance exam was reinstated a long time ago, didn't you know?" The young man showed no wariness towards strangers, only enthusiasm and joy towards fellow students.

"Oh dear, ten years have passed. The 18-year-old boy has become a 30-year-old uncle, haha."
