"Why aren't you asleep yet?" Li Damei asked, yawning. The old man was tossing and turning, making noises. She almost fell asleep every time, but he kept her awake, so she couldn't help but ask.
"How can I sleep? Our girl still hasn't come back!" Qiao Haisheng turned around and said, "Do you think that boy would do anything to our girl?"
"What did you say?" Li Meihua was completely bewildered, then it dawned on her. She sat up abruptly, "Oh dear, why didn't you remind me sooner? If only I had sent the eldest son to the village to bring him back! What if something had happened!"
She had been busy throughout the torrential rain, and after finally getting everything sorted out, she ate dinner. Her daughter and son hadn't returned, and her first thought was that the rain had delayed them. Then thunder started, her child cried, and she completely forgot about everything else.
Qiao Haisheng sat up and covered her mouth with his hand. "Keep your voice down. Are you going to disturb everyone? I think we might be overthinking it. That child is a good person. I haven't heard of her doing anything bad outside. Our daughter will be fine."
Li Damei thought about it for a moment and realized that they were indeed overthinking things. She moved his hand away and said, "Then let's go to bed early and ask them when they come back tomorrow morning."
My daughter is sensible and won't do anything outrageous. I trust her completely.
Qiao Haisheng lay back down, pulled the covers over himself, and then, remembering his earlier thoughts, nudged Li Damei with his elbow. "What do you think of him as a person?"
"What's wrong with you now?" Li Damei asked, frowning.
Qiao Haisheng said in a pressured voice, "It's just that we're a bit older. In terms of looks, our daughter isn't good enough for us. You have to admit that, right?"
I have an idea in my head: how about we pair them up? What do you think?
"What?" Li Meihua exclaimed, covering her mouth. After regaining her composure, she moved her hand away and said, "Our daughter is only 18 years old. Besides, are the two of them a good match? Our daughter is about to go to university."
"I think it's a good match. He's older and knows how to care for people." Qiao Haisheng threw back the covers, sat up, picked up a pipe, lit it, and started smoking.
"You know our daughter got into university, and she'll be gone for several years. The Su family's son has been traveling around for years and knows a lot about the situation outside. If they get married, he can go with them, and then you and I will feel at ease."
"If no one is with you, will you feel comfortable sending your daughter to university so far away alone?"
Li Meihua blinked. She hadn't really thought that far ahead. The thought of her daughter leaving home for several years to study in an unfamiliar place, with no one around to look after her, made her realize how easy it was for something to happen to this young woman.
Su Chenhao is different. He has been away for several years, and most importantly, he has made money during these years. Otherwise, he would not have spent a large sum of money to do business.
Although they are less educated and older, they are still a good match in terms of appearance.
"Old man, you've had this idea for days, why are you only telling me now?"
Qiao Haisheng took a drag of his cigarette, slowly exhaled, and said with a smug look,
"You don't know, but these past few days when I've watched them discuss things together, I've felt that they're quite a good match, but I just haven't said it out loud."
