Just as dawn was breaking, Qiao Xiaoni vaguely heard footsteps outside. She had slept soundly the night before and didn't need to go back to sleep. She opened her eyes, stretched, quickly tidied herself up, and got out of bed. She folded the quilt on the kang (a heated brick bed) and went to the kitchen, where she saw her sister-in-law already busy at work.
Seeing her daughter get up, dressed in her usual clothes instead of the new clothes from the closet, Li Meihua pulled her along as they walked back, saying...
"Why didn't you change your clothes? Today is an important occasion. Take out some new clothes from your closet and wear them. Don't let outsiders laugh at you."
Qiao Xiaoni was pulled back into the house and watched as Li Meihua opened the closet, rummaged through it, and took out a pink plaid shirt. After comparing several pairs of pants, she chose a pair of blue pants that were relatively new.
