After a long and winding journey, they arrived at Su Xinghai's house, a three-room mud house. There was a small jujube tree by the door, its leaves all fallen. A few jujubes hung forlornly on the branches.
An elderly man in the courtyard was wearing a blue jacket and black pants, sweeping the ground with a broom in his hand. His hair was very white, and he looked to be at least over 60 years old.
"Uncle!" Su Chenhao called out to the old man.
Su Xinghai was hard of hearing and had no idea that someone was calling him. The dogs in the yard kept barking, so he glanced towards the door.
Seeing a man and a woman standing at the door who looked unfamiliar, I stopped sweeping.
Su Chenhao walked into the courtyard: "Uncle, I am Su Jin's son, Su Chenhao."
"Oh, oh!" Su Xinghai responded twice, then thought for a moment before remembering who the young man in front of him was.
"You've grown so much in the blink of an eye, I didn't even recognize you. You were just a little kid when I left the village!"
Su Chenhao glanced at the yard, where many clothes were hanging on the clothesline, including clothes for adults and children.
"I heard you moved back from the city. Did your whole family move back?"
"No, I just moved back here myself. They were worried about sending me back, so I need to settle in properly. My son will be returning to the city."
"The old house hasn't been lived in for many years. It took several days to clean it up; otherwise, they would have left long ago," Su Xinghai said eloquently.
Su Chenhao nodded: "I see. Your house is indeed quite old."
We get a lot of snow here in winter, and I don't think we can withstand it! You should take advantage of the good weather now and redo the roof.
"Reinforce the walls too; that will save us a lot of trouble when winter comes."
Su Xinghai shook his head: "This method won't work. My son also wants to repair the house and went up to the roof to take a look."
The connecting parts can't be removed, or the whole house might collapse. I'm worried about this too! There's no time to build a new house now; we don't have enough manpower or materials.
Su Chenhao, realizing his house was currently vacant, had an idea:
"Uncle, my house is currently unoccupied. If you don't mind, you can move in there and move back next spring when your house is finished."
This way you can get through the winter safely without delaying the construction of the house.
"Is your house unoccupied?" Su Xinghai immediately became interested. The village had a small population, and he couldn't very well live with his second brother. The old house was dilapidated, and he was getting old; if anything happened, he wouldn't even be able to prepare any precautions.
"My house is better than yours, so we'll definitely make it through this winter."
"My brother and I are staying at my wife's house right now, and we won't be back for a while. You can move in there without worry. As for your things, you can just move them to the small room." Su Chenhao said confidently. He had just been wondering how to get the old man to agree. He didn't want Qiao Xiaoni to misuse her supernatural abilities. Sensing someone's thoughts seemed useful, but in the long run, it could lead to dependence, making people stop thinking and always looking for shortcuts.
If one day my senses are lost, I will be at a loss.
"This girl is your wife! She's pretty and a perfect match for you. You're so young to have found such a beautiful wife. You're very lucky!" Su Xinghai praised her happily.
