Su Ming finally managed to stand up and kicked a shard of glass on the ground.
"What are you thinking? Even if they aren't children of the Su family, we can't just take over their property!"
Besides, my parents are already buried. Not many people know about this, so who will vouch for them?
It would be a lie to think that you wouldn't be tempted by those three rooms. With the children growing up and now facing the prospect of marriage, how can you expect wives to come to your door without a house?
Ding Guizhi said, "You idiot, if no one can prove it, we can find someone. As long as we can prove that Su Jin is an adopted child, everything else will fall into place."
Su Ming found his wife's wild idea unbelievable, but then he thought, what if it could actually be done?
The house and land are worth a lot of money in his eyes! He doesn't care much about family ties. He doesn't have much affection for the two children, and they are not related by blood. Isn't it normal for them to be abandoned?
"Can this be done?"
“I said I can do it, so I will. Tomorrow I will find some respected people in the village to testify. It’s just a matter of saying a few words; it’s not like I’m doing anything immoral.” Ding Guizhi said smugly, “Once they are driven away, their house will be ours.”
Logically, it should belong to us too; this deal is definitely worthwhile.
"Then...then go find some witnesses!" Su Ming compromised in the face of self-interest. Even though he felt something was amiss, he decided to give it a try.
Ding Guizhi went to the outer room to get a broom and swept up the broken glass on the floor, humming a little tune as if the matter was about to be resolved.
...
When Qiao Xiaoni woke up again, she vaguely realized she had overslept. Struggling to sit up, she caught a whiff of meaty aroma. The lard must be almost rendered. Remembering what she had been planning to do, she quickly grabbed her clothes and hurried to the kitchen. Sure enough, she saw the meat in the pot was almost done rendering, its surface already golden brown.
"Mom, why didn't you call me?" Qiao Xiaoni called out to their backs.
Tao Chunfang turned around and smiled, "Why didn't Mom and I call you? We called you several times but you didn't wake up. So we decided to make it ourselves and let you sleep a little longer. You must not have had a good rest these past few days. Look how soundly you are sleeping."
"Sister-in-law, did you really call me?" Qiao Xiaoni found it unbelievable. She was a light sleeper and could wake up if someone moved around in the room.
“Your sister-in-law and I really did call you, but you were sleeping so soundly that you probably wouldn’t wake up even if it thundered outside.” Li Meihua scooped a piece of sizzling oil from the pot, put it in her mouth, and chewed it. “You bought good meat; the oil and meat are both fragrant.”
Qiao Xiaoni said, "Mom, sprinkle some of the fine salt I bought into it later. This will help it keep longer. Don't put in too much, just a little bit."
Li Meihua thought about the package her daughter bought today and felt it was a waste of money. But when she thought about the meat she would eat tonight, she swallowed back the words she was about to say. The meat was so delicious; she could say that she had never tasted such delicious meat in all her years of life.
"Okay, I understand. From now on, we'll do whatever you say about the kitchen. You can be our little housekeeper."
